IDaredevil has returned in a dark and intense adventure where action and multiple plot lines combine to make easily the best Marvel series on Disney+ to date.
I was given access to view the entire season of nine episodes, and I am already very excited about what the final nine episodes of season two will offer.
The series opens with a shocking and action-laden sequence of events and then picks up a year later where Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), has put his vigilante past behind him yet struggles with what he sees as inadequacies within the legal system. Despite this, he continues to defend the underdog even when the reality of taking on clients who will infuse cash flow into the business arise.
When Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio emerges as a viable candidate for mayor of New York, Matt finds himself conflicted as he he knows there is a much bigger game in play behind the political maneuverings.
At the same time, a serial killer is loose upon the city, and Fisk uses the situation to his advantage to organize a task force made up of officers of questionable repute in order to consolidate his control and remove the threat of vigilantes.
These are just a few of the plotlines that intertwine, as there are also numerous character arcs that build upon the universe.
What is deeply satisfying about this is that at no time did it feel like there was too much going on as the various plot elements, although complicated at times, were riveting and highly engaging.
The performances were first rate not just amongst the leads, but the supporting cast shines as they all play a crucial part in the story. There was a considerable amount of attention paid to the fact that production of the show was shut down and retooled under new showrunners, as rumors had the prior efforts being more of a courtroom drama. While legal elements do play into the plot, the conflicts Matt has between his identities and other characters plays a crucial part of the series. When the action comes, it is fast, brutal, and intense as bones break, blood flies, and carnage ensues.
This is a much darker entry into The Marvel Universe and, at times, goes beyond the Netflix series that preceded it without ever being gratuitous. The focus is to show the dangerous and violent world that compels the characters and emphasizes the danger surrounding them.
There are moments in the prior Marvel series to date where I felt that much of the content was filler to pad out a season order and that roughly 2/3 of the episodes really contained necessary content. That is not the case with Daredevil: Born Again, as there is so much going on that it is difficult to stop watching. I caught myself more than once saying that I would take a break for the night after the current episode, only to find myself watching another one because I was so utterly drawn in.
While this is going to be a challenge for those who will have to wait a week between episodes, I can tell you that it will be more than worth it and it is so nice to see the characters back in a story that does them justice and hopefully we will be seeing much more of Daredevil in the near future beyond the upcoming season.
