Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) is a successful if unassuming man. He is a top real estate broker but still emphasizes a personal touch and simple ways by making his own cookies for clients and riding his bike to and from listing to engage with the people along the way.
Marvin is well-liked by his clients, boss, and staff and is in a very happy place in his life; until his past comes back unexpectedly in the form of a former associate named Rose (Ariana DeBose), who was long thought dead at Marvin’s hands seeing how the later used to be the top enforcer for his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu), who is a ruthless criminal figure.
Marvin’s act of compassion has now set him back into his old world as his struggles to keep the new life he has built which is the central theme of the new movie “Love Hurts” which combines action, comedy, and romance into an effective mix.
Marvin must contend with unresolved feelings about his past as well as his need to stay away from and alive when numerous characters from his past come to confront him. Thankfully Marvin is a very skilled fighter and his years out of the business still leave him able to defend himself even though he takes his lumps along the way and carnage is usually in the aftermath.
Like the best Jackie Chan films in modern settings; the movie has a mix of colorful characters such as a team lead by Marshawn Lynch who discuss relationships and life in between their over-the-top actions to get Marvin and the chaos that follows them.
The plot is fairly simple and does move a bit slow in a few places but is saved by the solid action segments which are as fast and frantic as action fans would want and are well-supported by the cast.
In the end; “Love Hurts” is a fun and enjoyable action romance with enough humor to effectively offset the action and a winning cast to bring it all home.
