Weddings can be a frantic time but this is to be expected when family members gather. In the new Prime Video comedy “You’re Cordially Invited”, single father Jim (Will Ferrell) dotes on his daughter Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan), especially since they lost her mother at a young age.
The unexpected announcement of the wedding while it for shocking for Jim; puts them into overdrive as he quickly books a beloved island resort in Georgia where he was married many years ago.
Margot (Reese Witherspoon) is a successful television producer in Hollywood who is delighted when her sister announces that she is both engaged and expecting; the latter who must kept from their conservative Southern family of which Margot is distant and borderline estranged.
Margot has fond memories of retreats to the island with her grandmother and sister and happily books the venue for his sister’s wedding.
When the day arrives, Jim, Margot, and their respective entourages arrive only to discover that a booking error has them both scheduled for the same time and there are not enough resources to go around.
After some initial confrontation, the parties find a way to split the facilities between inside and outside for the various receptions and share the dock where the ceremonies will take place.
Naturally, things do not go as planned and the easily triggered Jim sets a series of events into motion to get back at Margot and the other wedding but in doing so opens themselves up to retaliation as the blessed day soon erupts into a battle of wills with a good measure of family drama and rivalry thrown in.
The setup is entertaining enough and there are more than a few laughs along the way. The biggest issue is that the film tends to drag in the middle and at times appears to be going through the motions as it gains momentum. Thankfully, the finale is enjoyable enough as is the bonus material during the credits.
While aspects of the film may not have worked for a full on theatrical release, as a streaming title it more than delivers enough entertainment to keep viewers happy and the cast is very likable and engaging.
