Winston (Topher Grace) is a man facing the consequences of a life filled with bad choices. Having cooked the books for an accused criminal, he finds himself hiding out in a remote part of Alaska and under arrest by a Federal Agent named Madolyn (Michelle Dockery).
In the new movie “Flight Risk”; the tension mounts as Madolyn attempts to escort Winston back to Anchorage so he can testify in New York as there is a ticking clock before the trial window ends.
Taking a small charter plane under the piloting skills of a man named Daryl (Mark Wahlberg), Madolyn is not taking any risks as it was learned that her last assignment did not go well and she has been riding a desk for the past few years as a result with this assignment being her chance at redemption.
The trip takes an unexpected turn when it is learned that Daryl is actually an unstable assassin sent to stop them and after an intense confrontation; Madolyn is forced to try to bring in her captives despite her inability to fly a plane.
Director Mel Gibson lets the cast carry the film and while there are gaps in logic and reason along the way; the leads hold your interest as does the situation as it is filled with tense moments that while never taking the audience to the edge; keeps you watching and waiting to see what comes next.
The movie takes advantage of some of the downtime between tense moments to fill in aspects of the characters which helps they elevate beyond the usual stock character stereotypes usually found in movies of this type and they are each interesting characters with their own motivations and enough mystery to their natures to keep audiences guessing what may come next.
In the end “Flight Risk” is an entertaining film that despite some flaws holds your interest and delivers the escapist entertainment that one seeks when going to the movies and delivers what the audience expects.
