The latest Star Wars adventure has arrived on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Jon Watts who made a name for himself with the recent Spider-man movies has gone all in as Executive Producer as well and also wrote and directed various episodes of the series.
Set in the New Republic era; the show focuses on a group of children who find a mysterious spaceship and soon find themselves Hyperdriven away and unsure how to return to their home as it is not on any star charts due to it being considered a planet from myth.
Their only help at first is an old droid named SM33 (Nick Frost) who charts them a course to a port where Pirates and other questionable types gather. The crew gathers the wrong attention and falls into the company of Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law) who quickly is marked as a resource but one who is untrustworthy by many of the crew.
This scenario is the basis of the series where we will undoubtedly learn more about the planet the children come from and the murky pasts and motivations of some of the characters. While the visuals in many areas are solid and there are some good action sequences; I did have to remind myself that this is a series aimed at younger viewers as kids screaming, talking about school, parents, etc gave me impressions of children playing Star Wars in a lavish setting versus a “Goonies” in space adventure.
There were enough moments in the three episodes I watched to enjoy and I will be eager to see how the series unfolds as there is some interesting potential here for fans of all ages.
The series premieres on Disney+ on December 2nd with two episodes with new episodes to follow each week.
