Games based on movie franchises have often been a delicate mix as sadly there have been far too many that have missed the mark and failed to meet the expectations of fans than those who capture the elements that made the franchise such as success.
In the new game Kong: Survivor Instinct players are given what I thought was a refreshing new way of gameplay by making it a side-scrolling adventure where players must navigate a devastated city in the hopes of finding their daughter.
Players will move, climb, duck, dodge, and manipulate objects to enter and exit buildings and avoid obstacles and will even have to solve various puzzles such as collecting sounds to reconstruct and use at various times in the game.
Combat does enter into the mix as human obstacles will appear which require melee attacks and blocks and players will have to use their health kits to recover and find a way to dispatch the foes. In time; a gun will come into play which will require more evasion moves from players as well as conservation of ammunition as locks do arise that require players to shoot in order to advance.
Naturally, this is a game featuring Kong and he does show up frequently to mix things up from destroying landmarks and obstacles to creating a challenging mix of speed and stealth for players to escape from.
In the end the game provided a very engaging and at times challenging adventure that required a mix of skills as it was a very unexpected delight from the start.
