As the first gay romantic comedy to be produced by a major studio, Bros is acutely aware of the film romcom lineage. The film Stars Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane as its romantic leads.
Eichner, is confident in who he is as a gay successful man, but is still guarded when it comes to allowing himself to be vulnerable to anyone. Meanwhile, Macfarlane is the heartthrob who enjoys the physical side of relationships, is also unsure about opening himself up to vulnerability in another person and his family.
The two meet and we are off on a journey that is honest in its awkward beginning, followed by the complications that come with a blooming romance when each not ready to face their true feelings. Both Eichner and Macfarlane are excellent in their performance and there is a feeling of real chemistry between the two.
It seems fitting that Bros pays homage to the 1989 film, When Harry Met Sally, which created the modern romcom. Because today Bros blazes its own modern gay romcom trail by being unapologetically LGBTQ+ in a way that is not only able to laugh at itself, but is also honest in its protagonist’s journey to find real love and companionship. It is this balance that causes the film to be relatable to everyone who has ever looked for love, regardless of lifestyle.
Bros is an enjoyable, fun, fresh and honest romcom that fans of the genre will enjoy.
