The lovable Chip ‘n Dale are back in the new Disney + movie “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” and it is a nostalgia-filled outing that viewers of all ages will enjoy.
The film mixes live-action, CGI, and animation to present a world where humans and animated creations from multiple genres exist similar to “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. The movie starts with how the duo met through their successful run on their Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers series.
Things are great for the duo until Chip (John Mulaney) learns that Dale (Andy Samberg) plans to spin off into a solo show even though Chip believes this will lead to their successful showing being canceled. When Dale ignores this concern and fractures their friendship, the film moves forward in time where Dale has given himself a CGI update and is trying to revive his career while Chip is a successful insurance agent who lives at home with his dog.
When their friend Monterey Jack (Eric Bana) expresses concerns that he is targeted to disappear and be forced to make bad quality knock-off films over an unpaid debt, Dale sees this as a way to get the team back in action but Chip wants no part of this even when Jack vanishes.
With the help of a human Detective named Ellie (Kiki Layne) the duo must travel the city to try to save their friend before he vanishes forever and along the way they encounter so many characters from the world of animation.
The film throws a lot of images on the screen as the nostalgic drops are not limited only to Disney films as there were references to “Cats” and other franchises along the way. While I do wonder if younger viewers will be able to appreciate the nostalgia that the show offers and some may find the pacing better suited to adults, the show is a fun update on the classic series.
The cast is solid and there are so many cameos that it is great fun to try to match the voice with the characters and also identify the abundant animated cameos.
If you are looking for a fun dose of nostalgia loaded with great visuals and a film the entire family can enjoy, do not miss this film.
