Picking up shortly after the prior film; “Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms” takes what made the prior film and series such a hit with fans and takes the mayhem to an all-new level.
The film involves the aftermath of the Mortal Kombat tournament where the two sides are locked in an all-out battle to control the realms.
Seeking to end the ongoing war; Shao Khan (Fred Tatasviore); asks Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell); asks the Elder Gods to have one final tournament where the winning side will control the Realm. Raiden opts to become mortal to take part in the competition and with his team; they set out to save the Realms.
Johnny Cage (Joel McHale); fires off wisecracks while wooing Sonya Blade (Jennifer Carpenter), and battling a deadly assortment of enemies.
At the same time, Scorpion and Sub-Zero set aside their dispute to stop a deadly new faction from obtaining a vital element that puts the storylines on a collision course and puts Liu Kang (Jordan Rodrigues); squarely in the path of destiny.
The action is intense and very brutal and has graphic action and fatalities which are in keeping with some of the best moments from the game series. While earlier entries in the series played it PG-13; the last two animated and the recent live-action film embrace the violence and gore and while it is brutal and graphic; is in keeping with the series and is very compelling.
The film does not rely solely on carnage but instead uses that to support the story and characters and the final result is a very winning formula and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
