A World Of Wonder And Worry
A free demo of Square Enix’s upcoming action platformer Balan Wonderworld drops on all the usual suspect platforms next week. Set in the fantastical Wonderworld, a place where happy memories meld with anxieties to create a unique landscape. The game, which was developed by the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog, centers around the Balan Theatre, where dwells the mischievous maestro, Balan. Square Enix promises the platformer will include twelve touching tales, each taking place within their own imaginary world.
The demo offers up two full hours of gameplay, and allows for both solo and local co-op play. Playing in co-op allows gamers to unlock paths unavailable in the single-player version via players combining the powers of their costumes, as different costumes unlock different abilities.
The demo will allow players to travel to three of the game’s worlds. First there’s the beautiful farm with towering crops, built from the memories of a farmer whose beloved cornfield was destroyed in a storm. Then there’s the world of floating islands created from NPC Chang Haoyu’s love of the open sky. Here you’ll find floating islands and bicycle parts gliding aimlessly through the sky. The third and final world is a charming town where candy and books float through the sky and buildings are made of moving gears. A lot of floating to say the least. However, considering that it’s a platformer, coming from the creators of the seminal Sonic the Hedgehog series, we imagine it is well worth a look.
Balan Wonderworld ‘s demo drops on consoles, Steam and for the mobile-inclined Nintendo Switch on January 28th, allowing players to get a taste of this promising title before its March 26th release.
