Long before James Gunn made cinematic gold with “The Guardians of the Galaxy” and before he took a shot at “Suicide Squad”; Gunn wrote “The Specials” which is arriving on Blu-Ray and allows fans to discover this enjoyable film.
The film introduces audiences to the sixth or seventh most popular hero team who are eager to grow their brand and move up the hierarchy of the Hero world.
Featuring husband and wife heroes The Strobe (Thomas Hayden Church) and Ms. Indestructible (Paget Brewster), the dysfunctional pair leads an even more dysfunctional team featuring The Weevil (Rob Lowe), Amok (Jamie Kennedy), Power Chick (Kelly Coffield), Alien Orphan (Sean Gunn) and the newest member Nightbird (Jordan Ladd). James Gunn also plays Minute Man whose name confuses those who do not grasp his name is in relation to his ability to shrink versus the American Revolution.
With The Weevil hoping to join a team with more status and discovering his wife is being unfaithful; The Strobe and crew begin a slow meltdown that reaches a tipping point during a disaster laden unveiling of their new toy line which they had hoped would give the team a needed boost.
With life as they know it spiraling out of control and The Strobe resorting to taking ordinary work it will take a heroic effort for this team to rebound and save the day as well as their relationships.
There are several great supporting parts as well as the great work by Melissa Joan Hart and Judy Greer. While this is not an FX laden film it is a humorous look at the dysfunctional side of super heroes dealing with everyday problems which are so often overlooked by mainstream depictions of super heroes.
The film does not focus on the team in action but rather their day to day lives and the politics behind getting the choice missions from the government.
Featuring a great picture and sound upgrade as well as loads of bonus features and deleted scenes; fans and collectors will not want to miss this set.
