During our coverage of PAX west 2019; I got the chance for some hands-on time with the pending Predator: Hunting Grounds. The PS4 title casts players as either a solider or the Aien Hunter.
The mission we played involved picking a class to play; which I selected Assault as I was in the mood to lay down some firepower. Once in mission: the crew and I headed towards our objectives in a highly-detailed landscape.
Along the way we encountered enemy units who would attack us as we attempted to do things like access a computer, restore power, upload a virus, ,and other tasks essential to our mission.
While this part played out like many other team based shooters; the real factor was The Predator. The stealthy and dangerous hunter moved around the trees picking off anyone who came near it. Many times I had no idea it was in area save for the targeting laser that would emerge from nowhere before lighting up a player.
I was able to revive players downed by conventional fire; but the Predator brings in a new level of power. While I managed to take out about eight enemies; the Predator downed my team before I could be revived following being down by an explosion.
I had attempted to confuse the Predator by igniting several fuel containers as I thought that the excessive heat would throw off his thermal vision. Unfortunately this also allowed me to miss a grenade that had been tossed in and it knocked my out. While trying to recover the Predator dispatched our team and that was all she wrote.
Someone asked me how the game was and I said it played like a better versiion of EVOLVE combined with most Squad based Shooters
What we played was lots of fun and we hope that the final version of the game builds on the promise of what was shown.
