Dire Wolf Digital Talks About Jumping From Digital To Tabletop Games

Making the jump from video games to tabletop games wasn’t an easy task for Dire Wolf Digital, but now the studio has a tabletop gaming division and has been able to bring their card game to Gen Con for the last three years.

Gen Con, the largest tabletop gaming convention in America, took place Aug. 2-5 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Matt Hudson, marketing director said they’ve been fortunate to have the resources to create a tabletop game division that has helped design Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure.

“We had a lot of people waiting in the wings,” he said.

Dire Wolf Digital up until 2016 specialized in video games. Hudson said the studio has about 110 employees and a lot of passion for board and card games.

Dire Wolf takes card and board games that fit well on a tablet and adapted them for in that space such as Lotus. Lotus is a card game from Renegade Game Studios where players aim to control and build flowers for points.

Not everything went smoothly when Dire Wolf attempted to design a tabletop game and there were challenges to overcome, but Hudson said that Dire Wolf partnered with Renegade in order to bring Clank! to Gen Con in 2016. And according to him, it paid off.

“We were really overwhelmed by the reception,” Hudson said.

Since then Hudson said Clank! has found a home at Gen Con.

Clank! is an adventure deck building game where 2-4 players delve into a dungeon to steal artifacts and loot. The deeper into the dungeon players travel the risk that one player will make a sound, thus the name Clank!, increases and possibly of waking the dragon.

“Clank! is very much apart of who we are,” Hudson said.

This year, for the first time ever Clank! In! Space! Apocalypse! was available to play. Apocalypse! is an expansion to Clank! In! Space!

Clank! In! Space!, as you can probably guess, is Clank! in space, but instead of a dragon players are trying to thwart Lord Eradikus on a spaceship.

Clank! In! Space! Apocalypse! will be available Sept. 5.

Also at the show, Dire Wolf had External on demo tablets. Eternal is a free-to-play online collectible card video game that is available for Apple, Android and Steam.

Eternal is for two players and each player builds a deck of cards that are used to cast spells in the game.

Right from the start, Hudson said that they give you all the digital cards. According to him, there isn’t a determent for anyone to jump in and play.

“It helps welcome new players into the game,” he said.
