Coming off PAX East weekend, Blizzard Entertainment announced The Witchwood, a new expansion for its megahit digital card game Hearthstone. Players will join Gilneas’ courageous heroes as they venture into the haunted forest to hunt down monsters and witches to claim their bounty. The expansion adds 135 hair-raising cards, complete with new gameplay mechanics.
One of the mechanics include cards with the Echo keyword These cards create a copy of themselves in the player’s hand when played. These copies can be played over and over before disappearing at the end of the turn. Additionally, the expansion adds rewards for players who build decks using only even or odd cost cards. If your deck has only even-cost cards at the start, your starting Hero Power costs one mana. If your deck only has odd-cost cards, your Hero Power is upgraded.
Gilneans can transform between their human and worgen forms, as can some of the cards in The Witchwood. Worgen cards swap Attack and Health, and can create unique opportunities for the savvy player.
Minions with the new Rush keyword can attack other minions immediately, but can’t attack the enemy Hero until the following turn.
The Witchwood marks the beginning of a new Hearthstone Year: The Year of the Raven. New cards release for the standard format with each Hearthstone Year, keeping the meta fresh and introducing new strategies for its fans, both new and the most loyal.
Players can pre-purchase The Witchwood card packs in a 50-pack bundle for $49.99 and receive 20 bonus card packs alongside the “In A Dark Wood” card back.
