As we prepare for our coverage of the Playstation Experience next weekend in Anaheim, I had a chance to get some hands on time with the upcoming PSVR Shooter ROM: Extraction. I got a chance to play at a local Best Buy as some Playstation representatives were on hand to demo the PSVR and some of the upcoming game and I was thrilled to get a chance to try out the game.
I played with the PSVR Aim Controller which was an ideal controller for the intense action of the shooter which caught my attention from the start and never once let up.
Armed with a futuristic Assault Rifle, I had to survive waves of enemy units who attacked my position from all angles and elevations. Some came right at me, others took cover, and some used the upper level windows to flank at me and fire.
My character remains in a stationary position during the waves but I was able to fight them off with extended bursts of fire as well as strategic use of the grenades which can be fired from the under barrel of the rifle.
Perhaps one of my biggest weapons was the ability to slow time into a Bullet Time style effect for a limited time which allowed me to mow down enemies who had setup close to me as well as make precision shots at enemies who had dug in or taken cover.
The immersive nature of the game works very well with the PSVR environment. What I lacked for in character mobility was made up for by intense action and gripping firefights which recall some of the classic 80s action films such as “Aliens” where characters had to make a heroic stand against overwhelming odds.
While the graphics were no cutting edge, they were very solid and combined well with the action to make the game one that I definitely want to see more of and will likely pair well with Farpoint as one of the best VR shooters available. For more information on the game, please visit
