3 Geek-Tastic Destinations for a Summer Vacation

Summer is here and you’ve got plenty of vacation days to use. But where should you go? From Comic Con and 80s arcade games to haunted hotels and Broadway shows, these three domestic destinations are perfectly suited for a geek-centric vacation.

For Sunshine, 80s Arcade Games and Comic Con Visit San Diego, California

Comic Con International is returning to sunny San Diego this summer. The convention will take over America’s Finest City from July 20 to 23. There will be dozens of special guests in attendance this year, including award-winning artist Arthur Adams, who has worked on Marvel covers. While Comic Con is a pretty solid reason to pack up your bags and head west to California, this vacation destination has much more to offer. Take sometime to explore the sandy shores and maybe do a bit of standup paddle boarding while you’re at it. 2 Stand Up Guys offers board and paddle rents as well as lessons. When night falls head to one of San Diego’s arcade bars, like Coin-Op Game Room, Side Car Bar or Brewski’s Bar and Arcade for old-school games and drinks. For accommodations, check out Downtown San Diego’s boutique hotel, The Pearl. The 1960s-era hotel has a mid-century modern vibe with contemporary amenities, plus a pool with private and semi-private cabanas and a restaurant and bar.

For Haunted Hotels, Culture and Broadway Shows Visit New York, New York

This city should be on every traveler’s checklist of places to visit. When traveling to New York, consider staying at a storied, historic hotel. Or rest your head at one of the city’s haunted hotels, like the renowned Hotel Chelsea. While you’re at it, check out other rumored-to-be-haunted sites like The Ear Inn, an Irish tavern or the Merchant’s House Museum, both of which are located Downtown. When you’ve had enough ghost chasing, checkout a Broadway show. It’s one of the most iconic things to do in New York. Catch a show like Drunk Shakespeare, Spamalot or another goofy production. It’s easy to find discounts on NYC Broadway shows, so don’t let a steep ticket price tag hinder you from seeing one.

For Thrill Rides, Butterbeer and International Fare Visit Orlando, Florida

All of the best theme parks are in Orlando, including Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, Legoland, Busch Gardens and more. Can’t-miss parks include The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Here you can tour Diagon Alley and sip Butterbeer, just like Harry would have done. Seeking another can’t miss park? Try Disney’s Epcot. As if it wasn’t cool enough, the park also hosts an impressive food and wine festival that celebrates global cuisines from around the world with events such as grand tastings and dining pairings. When it comes to lodging, Undercover Tourist recommends staying on-site at one of the park’s hotel accommodations. This can oftentimes save you money and its nearby where you will be spending most of your time so there’s no long commute after a day of fun.
