Recently I spoke with Chandler Kinney who will be appearing in the upcoming Lethal Weapon series on FOX. Chandler talks about her character and career.
What can you tell us about your character?
Riana Murtaugh is your typical LA teen. Her life revolves around her phone. She is quick-witted, a bit edgy, and outgoing. She wants to get out into the world and experience life to its fullest which can cause some friction between her and her parents.
In what ways is the series alike and different from the film series?
Fox’s Lethal Weapon will definitely keep the essence of the original films! We will still provide that distinct mix of comedy, drama, and action that Lethal Weapon fans know and love. As far as what will be different, this Lethal Weapon will be a TV series which means we will have the opportunity to dive even deeper into the lives of these characters.
How much pressure is there as the series and characters have become beloved icons.
When making a TV show, naturally, you’re already under a lot of stress. We really want people to love the work that we put into our jobs. But remaking a widely popular film series into a television series adds an extreme amount of pressure! Despite that, I’m so incredibly thankful to be a part of Lethal Weapon!
How did you prepare for the role?
Of course, to prepare for the role, I watched the original films! However, the Riana that I’m portraying is younger and has a slightly different personality than the one in the films. I’ve also been able to talk about my character with our writers and director.
What is working with your cast like and any special moments from filming you can share?
Our cast is so awesome and I’m really looking forward to getting to know them better. One of my favorite memories from shooting the pilot was when we were filming a dinner scene at the Murtaugh house and in between takes, we would have great conversations. It was just a really nice moment and everyone was enjoying themselves! I’m looking forward to more moments like that one.
How did you get into acting and what was your big break?
I joined the acting world through dance! I’ve been a dancer since I was 3 years old and after a while, I wanted to start performing for more people. I started doing a little bit of theater which sparked my interest in acting. So I started taking acting classes! I’m not sure what my “big break” was, but one of my favorite projects that I’ve worked on, and one that has certainly given me so much knowledge and experience, is my role as Catherine on Gortimer Gibbon’s Life On Normal Street.
What do you look for when you consider a part?
When considering a potential TV or film project, I tend to gravitate towards the roles that will not only be fun, but will also challenge me to become a better actor and person. I love working on projects that give me the opportunity to learn, grow, and receive amazing life experiences! In the future, I would absolutely love to work on an action film! It is definitely one of my many goals I’d like to achieve in my career!
What do you like to do in your free time?
When I’m not filming, I enjoy dance, martial arts, playing piano, writing, and listening to music. I also love hanging out with my friends and family as much as I can.
