InSomnia Developer Interview

Recently I spoke with the developers of the pending RPG game InSomnia. The game is a vast and ambitious game
offering tons of gameplay options for gamers.

What is the background and setting for the game?

InSomnia is an RPG set in unique retro-futuristic world with the focus on a complex,
twisted story with hardcore realistic close and distanced combat system.

How will crafting and resource gathering be handled in game?

Crafting isn’t something that we’d consider a main features of the game, it’s more
like something that you can do – especially as you feel the lack of ammo, meds,
lockpicks. You’ll also have to maintain your equipment by performing occasional
fixes and that requires resources as well. Rare weapons will require rare plans to
fix them and a proper skill to actually keep them maintained. To get those plans and
resources you can buy them separately (if you’re lucky enough to find someone who
sells them) or inside other devices. So you can disassemble them for necessary parts
later.

What are some of the locales players will encounter?

The player will get to know many factions and separate independent characters.
Military forces of the Ordinate, settlements of intelligent deformants (mutants),
Ghetter reservations, merchants and mercenaries, fanatics of the Forgotten Path
Church. Each one of them will have their own distinct vision on what actually
happens around within, and the history of, Object 6.

How is combat handled in the game?

This game has a realistic hardcore real time combat which includes close combat,
blocking, dodging and rolling, limited fatigue, combo attacks and distanced
headshots, covers, jamming and overheating weapons, limited ammo. Equipment will
play a big role in the game, each gun or armor will have it’s own bonuses and
downsides. So basically winning the battle means planning ahead, and pick the right
stuff depending on who you are dealing with and not running headstrong into battle!

What are some of the enemies and weapons players will face?

Along with the obvious enemies, security systems, marauders, feral deformants
(mutants) you can also expect to be challenged by military types, Children of Morach
clan, Forgotten Path Church fanatics etc. You will have to face pretty tough foes.
Fighting with which will be quite a task. Regarding the guns – they will be quite
different in terms of their usage. SMGs will be very effective against non-armored
targets, while soldiers of Tyrang division won’t even feel a thing if you attack
them with a machine gun. You will require a rifle with armor piercing bullets to
make them suffer.

What have been the greatest challenges with the game and the greatest successes?

The most complicated task is balancing and optimization. This can take so much time
and appears to be a never ending process. Basically the only way to see the progress
is to compare the results we have now and a month ago i.e. This process is far from
being fun. However we are very pleased with visual style and setting of the game. I
feel like we’ve already delivered 150% when it comes to those aspects.

Do you have DLC planned post release?

Currently we are not thinking about this, right now, although there are quite a few
story ideas that we shelved until the main game is out and generating revenue. The
main focus right now is to release the InSomnia’s main game.

Is there an online option?

Yes, we will have some co-op scenarios in mind, but it’s too early to get into finer
details – as we are working on expanding these ideas right now. We will have an
update regarding this question probably post Kickstarter campaign.

How much customization will players be able to do for their characters?

When the game starts you will be able to choose sex, customize the appearance of
your character, pick a biography and your starting equipment. From that point you
will change your character with the help of the decisions you will take. By the end
of the game you will have a unique character with his own story and scars left by
the consequences of your previous choices.

How long will it take most gamers to complete the game and are there side missions?

As it stands, we have about around thirty hours of main content + several side
quests; however, this may slightly change by the time we release the game. Thank you
for your questions!
