Insomniac games has partnered with GameStop to launch Song of the Deep. A “Metroidvania” side-scrolling exploration games where you play as a strong young woman named Merryn on her quest into the underwater abyss to find her missing father. Merryn, along with her rickety submarine will explore a non-linear interactive underwater world as she gains new abilities and upgrades that gain her access to new areas of the sea. Merryn will have to keep her wits about her as she will have to battle and outmaneuver various creatures and giant bosses along the way.
The game is a passion project that was inspired by the daughter of Insomniac Games Chief Creative officer Brian Hastings. With the help of the GameStop partnership, Insomniac has total freedom and creative control over the game however it enables Insomniac to provide dedicated marketing support and broad exposure that GameStop brings to the venture. The game will be launch digitally for $14.99 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this spring, with a physical disc version sold exclusively through GameStop.
In the demo we played, we found ourselves getting lost in exploration and puzzle solving. The game is charming in its visual and musical style, has tight controls and has all the elements of puzzle solving you would expect from this type of 2D side-scroller. Fans of metroidvania type games should take notice when this game releases later this year.
