During our coverage of CES 2016, I was able to get some more hands-on time with the upcoming Ratchet and Clank game which will be coming soon to time with the release of a movie by the same name.
This is the first in the series available for the PS4 system; the graphics are smooth and colorful. I thought I was watching a CGI rendered scene until I started to move about a bustling city filled with all manner of objects whipping around me.
Playing as Ratchet, I made my way atop a moving try above a futuristic setting and used my weapons to blast my enemies as I advanced forward. The game allowed me to do things such as shooting objects on the car in front of me which in turn would come apart and take some of the enemy with them. The speed and smoothness from which I was able to jump, fire, change weapons, dodge, and interact was very satisfying indeed.
I was able to cycle through my pre-selected weapons with ease and alternated between rockets and energy weapons as much as my ammunition would allow for. One challenge required me to use an energy based tether to secure myself and keep from falling to my demise. This is a bit tricky on a moving train and more than once I found myself dangling from the train.
A later level allowed me to take on a Boss in an open arena setting. The map was circular in design and with numerous reloads and power ups along the way. Using a circle/strafe approach, I was able to stay ahead of the big guy and do damage, and only when I took it on head on, did it present a serious challenge.
I am looking forward to seeing what the completed game holds, especially the co-op play which has been a big part of the series. The game looks like another hit for Sony and the value prices $39.99 should make it more attractive for those who have yet to experience any previous games in the series.
