This past weekend, thousands of gamers, media, and fans travelled to San Francisco for the 2015 Playstation Experience. After an impressive 2015 where Sony continued to build on their momentum as well as impressive showcases at E3, Paris Games week, and other shows throughout the world, fans were eager to see what Sony had in store next.
The opening showcase was filled with plenty of reveals such as new playable characters for Battleborn, Street Fighter V, and new games such as a giant robot Golf game for the Playstation VR and fans were eager for the next big reveal from Sony.
Some had hoped to get the release date and pricing for Playstation VR, while others were anxious to hear about new reveals and upcoming features. Sony did their best to accommodate fans but kept the biggest guns secure for a later date.
This is not a bad thing as Sony had a huge arsenal of titles and information to cover and their upcoming games look stunning.
For some this was a bit of a disappointment but many realized that Sony is very good and picking the times to reveal news and at a celebration that is geared mainly toward fans, they likely looked at the convention as a way to give back to their fans and to summarize the great year that was 2015, as well as keep the momentum rolling through 2016 and beyond.
While 2016 opens with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Sony has a showcase, do not expect it to be as heavy on the Playstation 4 as it is a venue designed to promote all of their products from televisions to cameras.
My belief is that Sony will go back to where they have done so well the past few years, E3, and may indeed announce a release date and price for Playstation VR and should it have a Holiday release, the company can then use San Diego Comic Con, Gamescom, The Tokyo Game Show, PAX Prime, and their likely 2016 Playstation Experience to promote the technology as well as many other new reveals.
One thing is sure, Sony has done a masterful job of marketing the Playstation 4, so do not be surprised if they find a way to make a big splash before E3 and use that venue to ice the cake.
2016 is looking like a very interesting year for Sony and gamers, and we are all watching and listening to see what comes next.
