The ancient and ongoing battle between the Jedi and the Sith has been the central theme that has driven Star Wars stories since the very first film appeared in 1977. The noble Jedi were wiped out by the evil and dangerous Sith who battled through the ages amongst themselves for power until Darth Bane instituted a Rule of Two where there would be no more than one Master and one Apprentice to ensure that the teachings of the Sith carries on and that their plans were not lost amongst internal fighting and positioning.
As time went on complacency set in on both sides leaving me to ponder which side was truly the most clueless and set the seeds for their own downfall.
The Jedi were twice attacked by Darth Maul in “The Phantom Menace” and Yoda himself confirmed that Maul was indeed a Sith and that always two there are.
Flash forward ten years to “Attack of the Clones” Count Dooku tells Obi Wan Kenobi that there is a Sith in charge of the Senate, and again, the Jedi decide to ponder it all the while personal freedoms are being eroded as the Clone Wars rage on.
In “Revenge of the Sith” Anakin tells Mace Windu that the Emperor is a Sith. He takes three Jedi to bring him in. No calls for backup, no alerting other Jedi of their discovery and to be on their toes as he may know that we are on to him and act accordingly and likely has followers poised to strike.
Clueless behavior again and again that lead to the fall of the Jedi, and gave the Sith the power they craved.
Speaking of the Sith, they also have their share of idiots starting with Darth Plagueis who in the cannon novels met his demise at the hands of Darth Sidious who in keeping with Sith traditions kills his Master and takes on an Apprentice of his own when he has nothing more to learn.
Considering that Plagueis became a master after killing his own Master, one would think that when Sidious had a Force trained weapon named Maul who called Sidious Master, he might get a clue that Sidious was making his move.
In the novel Darth Maul: Lockup Plagueis muses that Sidious is becoming more and more independent as he is poised to become Galactic Chancellor, he has his own servant who he has trained, and yet he pays no mind to this and allows Darth Sidious to send Maul on missions and reports to him with only minor oversite and instruction.
Dooku, well he was an idiot from the start so we cannot be shocked about his fate, which in turn brings us to Sidious himself. He encourages Vader to locate Luke and turn him to the Dark side of the Force. He knows Vader was moved to the Dark Side over his love of Padme and uses his love for Luke to manipulate him, even going so far as to fry Luke in front of his father while he called out to him for help.
What did he think was going to happen? You have a Jedi, his powerful Father, and you decide to take one of them on while the other watches knowing that he still holds a place in him for the wife he lost years ago.
So in closing it seems that both the Jedi and Sith are determined to be locked in conflict as both suffering from overconfidence and being clueless as to who the real enemy is and the threats before them and keep repeating the mistakes of the past.
I for one cannot wait to see what the new sequels will have in store, but although not a SIth, who thinks that Kylo Ren is going to get put in his place somewhere in the near future and perhaps, Luke knowing this, has been hesitant to train more Jedi.
