Assassin’s Creed, one of the best-selling video game franchises of all-time, is being released as a monthly comic book series for the first time – and we’re writing it! Debuting next Wednesday (October 14th), Assassin’s Creed #1 (released by Titan Comics) will not only expand the world of the franchise but also explore a very dark period in American history – the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.
For those unfamiliar with Assassin’s Creed, the video game involves being able to go back into an ancestor’s memories in order to explore historical periods, whether it’s Renaissance-era Italy, the American Revolution, or Victorian London. Our story will link the Witch Trials to a Spy Who Came In From The Cold-like espionage thriller set in modern day San Diego.
Charlotte de la Cruz is over-educated and underemployed, wasting her time in San Diego, spending her free time chasing down conspiracy theories. When a real-life conspiracy crashes into her life, she is pulled into the orbit of the Assassins, a mysterious organization with roots stretching back thousands of years, and users of stolen Animus technology, which allows them to experience the memories of their ancestors as if they were there. Charlotte has a secret in her blood… the genetic memory of an ancestor who was in Salem at the time of the infamous witch trials: Tom Stoddard, an Assassin who witnessed a dark act with repercussions for the present day.
As Charlotte is trained in the Assassins’ art, and as she investigates the life of her ancestor… the forces of Templar move against her. Will she learn the skills she needs to survive, and the truth she needs to prove her worth – before the Templars silence her forever?
It’s been amazing to work on another idea with such a passionate pre-existing fan base. Let us tell you, Shakespeare aficionados have NOTHING on Assassin’s Creed devotees when it comes to enthusiasm.. The teams at Titan Comics and Ubisoft have been amazing to work with and have given us a great deal of freedom to tell our story. And as soon as the idea of Salem came to our minds we knew it would be a perfect fit – a historical period full of treachery, secrets, lies and the silent quest for truth.
