With the Sony press conference a week from Monday, we are looking forward to seeing what Sony will reveal during their showcase event. As we look forward to settling into our seat at the venue, I have begun to wonder how much time will be spent on the VR device known as Project Morpheus.
The timing would be right for Sony to reveal its name, price, and release date as well as really push the pedal down but announcing a series of games both old and new that would work with the device.
Sony is betting that Virtual Reality is going to be the wave of the future and as such have put a lot of time and money into the device.
While the potential for it is amazing, I am still a bit cautious as I remember the great job Sony did with 3D gaming for the PS3 that did not take off as well as planned despite several 3D titles. Look no further than the lack of 3D games for the PS4 despite a 3D upgrade to the internal Blu-ray player and capability to support 3D games.
To say that E3 is important is an understatement and we expect Sony to come out with guns blazing to press home their sales lead over rival Microsoft and will likely lead with a barrage of titles and exclusives, but they may also come out swinging on the hardware side of things as well. We know of plans for PS4 units with larger storage capacity and hopefully new features for the PS4.
The reveal of a street date for the VR device would be a huge push as if they are able to get the device to market first and at an affordable price ahead of Oculus and the Steam device, then we could see a new wave of support for the console as early tech adapters who do not have a PS4 will likely not want to miss out on the wave of VR gaming that is coming.
We will debate the merit of the device at a later date but for now, the timing seems right for Sony to press home their advantage with the announcement of a VR bundle and affordably priced unit.
