As I sat down in the Mesa Art’s Center I didn’t know what I was going to expect. The stage was lowly lit with several pieces of props covered in curtains, and an oversized wooden toy train. On stage there was a man reading a harry potter book, while another fellow was going around the entire orchestra shaking everyone’s hands. The two fellows mentioned, wearing shirts with the number 1 and 2 were James Percy and Benjamin Stratton two of the actors of Potted Potter: the Unauthorized Harry Experience. A stage parody that explains all 7 harry potter books in 75 minutes. A production created by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner with Potted Productions. James Percy played the role of the boy wizard himself Harry Potter; while co-star Benjamin Stratton played every other major character. With the use of costumes, props, some fog, and lighting; the two bring a whimsical and ridiculous image of the magical world alive. The acting duo preformed a feat I had never seen on stage; a completely hilarious explanation on Harry Potter.
This show is literally a roller coaster from beginning to end; throughout the entire show I never knew what was going to happen next! The show never had a dull moment, especially with live Quidditch! At times it could seem extremely cheesy but then there would be moments of improv that had me doubling over in my seat. Now this show had all types of people attending; from kids to the elderly. This show is definitely family friendly, but absolutely not boring. I find this show to be a rarity in this day in age. Finding a family friendly show that is funny to all ages is extremely hard to find since most family friendly shows tend to lean more towards kiddy humor. However, James and Ben did not disappoint by making the characters larger than life, they kept the attention of the audience they entire performance. I did not see a single long face while leaving the show.
The quick wit of this speedy show made it extremely enjoyable to attend and I would recommend this show to anyone who enjoys Harry Potter, and a good comedy romp. To enjoy this show I feel the viewer only needs a brief knowledge of Harry Potter, but in actuality the viewer could have no knowledge as well and still get a good laugh out of the show. To anyone who wants a good laugh, enjoys a good parody, or just loves Harry Potter this is the show for you. Potted Potter is at the Mesa Art’s Center from February 18th-22nd; check it out if you can!
