Our Best Games Of 2014 Winners

We opted to not do the traditional best of category this year and even list a game of the year winner. The reason is that there were so many good games in 2014 and some happened to be in the same genre. As such we opted to just list our 10 favorite games of the year.

Joseph Saulnier had some that he wanted to include as well and they are listed below.

Infamous: Second Son

Second Son is one of the main reasons I bought a PlayStation 4 before the Xbox One. I loved the first game, and while the second game didn’t have the same grasp on my attention, I was absolutely looking forward to the new installment. And for me, it did not disappoint. Focusing in on someone other than Cole, Second Son shows you there other stories to be told in this universe. Plus, it was cool that it was set up in my neck of the woods. They managed to employ new, and oft visually beautiful, powers in a meaningful way to progress the canon of this world. Simply put, great game.

Watchdogs

Okay, don’t ring me out to dry on this one. It seems that this games was universally hated. I however, enjoyed it. Sure, it was basically Grand Theft Auto. And yeah, it didn’t meet the visual hype it led you to believe. And of course the concept and technology are just too unfeasible. But it’s a game. And I, for one, had a blast playing through.

Super Smash Brothers WiiU/3DS

… I feel like explaining this one is kind of not needed. Nintendo may not be in the same race as Sony and Microsoft anymore, but they are certainly not forgotten. And it’s because of their in-house franchises that most stick around – I for one am a Zelda-man ‘til I die). So what’s not to love seeing all the main characters from the Nintendo exclusive franchises, and now some not so exclusive franchises, beating the living hell out of each other?

Evil Within

Gotta say. I am not a big fan of the horror genre. It’s mostly because I don’t really get scared. I, like most, tend to laugh at the writer’s attempt at scaring the living daylights out of me. I have the same reaction in games as well as movies. But this game… It actually had me cringing, jumping at moments, and even feeling the stress and tension. If you have not tried, get to it.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Shadow of Revan

Okay. Here’s what you can expect from me. Any time a legit Star Wars game releases. It’s going to be on my top 5. Yes, it was an expansion, but a great one. I toyed with putting Wildstar up the list, even World Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor, but truth be told I only spent about 10 hours with the former, and I haven’t even played the latter yet. But I have been a subscriber to SWTOR since day one, and I still play it on at least an every other day basis. The expansion brings in some great new content, and a change to the skill system that is actually pretty refreshing. Gotta go… need to play some more.
