CES 2015 Gameplay Overview Of The Order:1886 Continues To Impress

During our cover of the 2015 Consumer Elctronics Show in Las Vegas, I got some hands on time with the pending PS4 game The Order:1886. I had played the game previously at PAX Prime and enjoyed what I saw, but I was a bit concerned about the linear aspects of the gameplay as it did seem to me like I was playing a rail shooter for much of my gameplay.

The new build I played was in a mix of a study and museum, and I started out with a scoped rifle sniping at enemies above and below me. I noted how enemies took cover behind doors and other objects but would reach around and over to fire at me from a covered position.

I did seem to be on rails for a bit as I slid behind cover and out of it near the railings, but I did stand and move over to a table where I was given the option of a pistol.

At this point I had enough of blasting the bad guys from afar even if I did enjoy smashing the display cases and doors with my gunfire.

Rushing down the stairs, I took great joy in riddling the bad guys with my auto fire pistol and dispatched as many as I could. My aggressive style worked well until my gun ran dry and allowed the enemies to use me for target practice. Thankfully I was giving the option to heal using my triangle and X keys which got me back into action.
I was able to locate a shotgun, and although slow to load, it packed punch and allowed me to blast the bad guys into oblivion.

I also had a grenade option which allowed me to help even the odds from the waves of attackers coming at me, many of whom displayed some remarkable survival instincts and tactics.

While I am still a bit concerned about the linear nature of the gameplay at times, I was happy to be able to move up and down the stairs, down hallways, and into rooms with freedom and dispatching the enemies as I saw fit. I am sure the gameplay will not be ideal for some as there are already many who wish to complain about a game they have not seen nor played, but from what I have seen and played on two different instances, the game looks promising and should be not only a hit exclusive for Sony but the cornerstone of a new franchise.

You can see my report on the game from PAX Prime here.

I am not confident you understand the definition of a game that is “on rails”. The Order is linear, but not “on rails” there is a big difference.

I know the difference and there are segments where your movements are limited to back and forth and up and down and it moves you around on its own. Thankfully with the new builds it is better as the first build I played was very much like Time Crisis.

Not every person has hated it. It has good graphics and a good premise so I am impressed with what I have seen and Sony has continued to polish the gameplay.
