This past weekend, Sony launched their first Playstation Experience in Las Vegas as an event designed for the fans. The two day event was punctuated with panels, reveals, and hands on time with several new and upcoming games for the Playstation 3, 4, and Vita.
Those who were not lucky enough to attend the event were able to watch a live stream online and follow along with the celebration and panels touting new games, inside looks, and seminars from leading members of the industry.
The opening ceremonies showed off new footage from the latest Uncharted, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, MLB, and Tearaway franchises as well as new games such as KillStrain, and a console version of the popular Day of the Tentacle game.
While the opening panel was light on hardware and new features, the games shown were impressive looking but the focus was a bit heavy on independent titles for my liking.
EA offered up three free games for the weekend, which went over well with fans, but for me, the expanded looks at Until Dawn, The Order: 1886 and Bloodborne looked great and even better than the versions I played at PAX Prime.
With Microsoft racking up strong sales over the Black Friday weekend, many thought Sony might use this weekend to announce new bundles, games, upgrades, but the focus was mainly on games we already knew about aside from the news on Street Fighter V and other titles which would be console exclusive to Sony.
With C.E.S. just a few weeks away, and Sony again having a showcase, this time geared to press and industry insiders, Sony is looking to drop the hammer again and again on Microsoft as they are showing no signs of slowing down the incredible momentum of the PS4 and have shown an impressive lineup of exclusive content for 2015 and beyond. Sony has likely built up enough momentum with this event to continue to roll up to E3 when they will likely be prepared to announce all new games, features, and services for 2016 and beyond.
The biggest question for me and many other gamers is if Sony can build on what they have shown and make good on the promising potential of what has shown and continue to strive to bring top quality exclusives to their system.
And it failed miserably. Delicious! Poor dying Sony.
I would say 16 millon in sales, and a ton of first part exclusives, as well as MS needing to lose money hand over fist with a price drop to increase sales would not be a failure.
