With the Xbox One selling briskly on Black Friday thanks in large part to a price reduction and bundling that make it attractive to buyers.
Ahead of this weekends Playstation Expo in Las Vegas, Sony has fired off their first salvo with the announcement of a limited edition, 20th Anniversary bundle.
Although limited to 12,300 units worldwide, what is of interest is what is included in the bundle beyond the attractive paint scheme.
The system includes the Playstation Camera yet has a suggested retail of $499.99 which is $100.00 higher than the usual retail price for the PS 4.
While it is not unusual for a special edition to have a higher price point for collectors, what is interesting if the fact that the camera is included but the price point for the system is not much different than purchasing a PS 4 and camera on their own.
I would expect Sony to announce some other bundles this weekend as well as several new titles and looks at announced titles.
That being said, it is a mystery if Sony will be lowering the price of their system in order to match the momentum that Microsoft has gained in recent weeks.
With over 15 million units sold and counting, Sony is in a enviable position but for a company that was very aggressive with their launch pricing for the system, it does seem odd to me that they have not done any price reductions to this point.
The Anniversary Edition likely indicates that the Playstation Camera is in the long term plans still for Sony as Microsoft pretty much disregarded the Kinect yet rather than include a game or another Dualshock 4, Sony opted to include the camera.
I think that Sony will likely drop a new set of bundles as well as some information on their long term plans for Morpheus and their Camera, as the Anniversary Bundle is likely just a first step in what is likely to be a big and crucial weekend for Sony.
I say this as despite their sales lead, they need to try to stem the Microsoft momentum and fan the flames of consumers and current system owners, and the best way to do this is a strong showing with a clear and aggressive path of future titles and expansions.
With just about three days before the show, the attention is on Sony and what they will do next.
It shows how lame Sony can be.
