10 Holiday Films For Those Needing A Break From Holiday Cheer

With the Holiday Season upon us, television networks have gone into overdrive with new and old holiday programming that are dripping with feel-good moments, family sentiments, and holiday cheer.

For some, there is only so much Holiday Cheer a person can take but not wanting to be labeled a “Grinch” or “Scrooge”, they need films that combine the season with their mood and interests.

With this in mind, here is a list of several holiday films that give viewers a break from the cheer yet maintain a celebration of the season and an up-tempo theme.

Prometheus

This “Alien” prequelish story is not the first place a person would look for Holiday Cheer but in their quest for answers, the crew emerges from Cryosleep in time for Christmas as the ship’s Captain mentions and is assembling a tree for the crew even before having his wake up breakfast.

Lethal Weapon

Drugs, murder, suicide, and tons of violence may seem par for the course in some cities, but this Buddy-Cop classic takes place during the Yuletide season as we are introduced to Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), in a Christmas Tree lot and there are plenty of other holiday references.

Die Hard

For all the bombs, bullets and blood that made this film so enjoyable for action fans. Let us not forget that it takes place during an office Christmas party gone horribly wrong. Bruce Willis gets into the holiday spirit after dispatching his first bad guy by dressing in him a Santa costume and a sign touting his new machine gun and signing off with Ho Ho Ho.

Gremlins

As the town quickly falls under the influence of the title characters let us not forget that the setting is a nice snow covered town during the holidays and that Gizmo himself was intended as a Christmas present.

Silent Night Deadly Night

There have been several film in this series but the original take of a homicidal maniac dressing as Santa and terrorizing the locales is a horror classic. From the rack on a rack scene to the headless sled ride this film is not for the kids.
Black Christmas

A psycho loose in a girls dorm during a snow storm. Regardless of if you are watching the original or the remake, you have some alternative holiday cheer now.
Edward Scissorhands

Tim Burton’s fantasy takes place during the festive season and offers some hints as to what Burton had in the works for “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
Batman Returns

Dark, brooding, and with a hint of not so subtle sexuality, this is the Batman film that shows the Holidays in Gotham.
Reindeer Games

Sex, betrayal, violence, greed, and more are the norm for this film, which ironically is also the mix for most family gatherings and mall outings.

Christmas Evil

When the poster shows Santa with an Axe you have an idea of what you are in for. Lets just say that when the Directors says “Cut” Santa takes things literally.
