Why I Still Have Not Purchased An Xbox One

As we look at the one year anniversary of the release of the Xbox One, it has been a year of highs and lows but has moved ahead on a strong note.

With their recent price cut and new exclusives, the system has seen an increase in sales and is looking ahead to s strong Holiday Season and beyond.

As such, many people ask me why I have not purchased an Xbox One system like some of our staff have done for review purposes.

My answer is usually that I just have not found anything about the system that compels me to purchase it at this time. Naturally this results I many questions and I explain it as such. First, I am a PC first gamer as I like the graphics, customization, and versatility that PC gaming offers me as I prefer to play my shooters with a mouse and keyboard.

Secondly, consoles for me are all about the exclusives, so we have a Wii U and Playstation 4 as our next generation systems.

For me when the Xbox One was announced, I said I needed to see exclusives beyond Halo and Gears of War as those two franchises are simply not enough for me to want to purchase a system. I had issues with several Xbox 360 systems that resulted in the Red Ring of Death and lousy service and support from Microsoft so this caused me to take a wait and see approach to the Xbox One.

When I look at the system today, I see a system that does not perform as well as the PS 4 in terms of graphics and frame rates on many common titles, and only The Master Chief Collection and Sunset Overdrive as exclusives of note. Ryse, TitanFall, and Dead Rising 3 have all come to PC with better versions than what is offered on the console, and as such, I look at the new offerings and do not see anything that compels me to purchase the system.

Sunset Overdrive is lots of fun, as is the Master Chief Collection but they are not enough to get me on board. Looking ahead to 2015, I see a few titles of interest such as Halo 5 but again they are not enough for me to take the leap at this time.

Family members have asked me if I would like one and I have said for now, I want to wait and see as I think next year will be a good time to re-evaluate my decision. By then not only will the system be cheaper, but there will be several more exclusives on the market and as such, I can look at what is being offered and decide if I need to get the system or if the PC and PS 4 remain my best option for gaming.

I want to stress that this is not a bash the Xbox One article, rather this is a look at why I have made the decision to wait on the system. It like all choices in gaming comes down to personal preferences and such. I spend a lot of time with the system at trade shows, conventions, and staff, for now I am not yet ready to make the leap, but who knows what the future will hold.

For others who have or want to embrace the system, Kudos as that is what being an informed consumer is all about. You weigh your options and make a decision based upon your interests, needs, and other matters. For me, I have not seen enough, but I am more interested now than I was a year ago.

First it is insecure and that is highly inaccurate. Secondly, I own this site as well as a national magazine, syndicated radio show, and newspaper so hardly a stranger. Thirdly PS 4 has a huge lead as MS counts units shipped to retail not sold. For those that want an underpowered system and iffy exclusive, knock yourself out. I prefer a console with more power, better frame rate, shareplay, and more exclusives and one that is outselling the Xbone 2-1 in terms of actual sales, even with the desperate price adjustment by MS.

That ‘more’ power and sales gaps are not even doubled, just marginal. Prove it all here if you thought ps4 sales was ‘actual’ or nobody will think you’re unbiased. Oh waitt, you can’t!! :-/

If those 14 millions ps4 were ALL sold to gamers then you’d be able to see *billions of dollars* in profit for playstation division written in latest sony reports. Those are shipped to *retailers* and you have zero idea how many were actually sold to gamers!

Btw your real identity is still questionable, you are not even a high calibre profile in the game industry.

Please go on dreaming with better fairy tales, i’m afraid nobody can cure your narcissistic personality disorder.

For someone that owns a national magazine, syndicated radio show and newspaper you don’t seem that smart or sensible and your comments here make you look like some cheesy bitter fanboy. Most people who write these kind of biased opinion pieces from what I’ve seen seem to show more common sense by avoiding the comment section all together. Sometimes it’s just better not to say anything at all.

I was under the impression that both reported “shipped to retail not sold” and that’s the way it’s always been. Isn’t it very difficult to keep track of each individual system sold? Where’s proof of this?

Both systems have their big exclusives (reason for buying) the PS4 just has more indie games which increases it’s overall number of games. No big deal it’s not like people go out and buy these consoles to play indie games anyway, although the media lately likes to think that we do.

Where power is concerned both have their advantages with the X1’s being least obvious of the two. Not to mention even the PS4 has games that aren’t in 1080p due to fixed hardware limitations. In the end the PS4 just has a few more 1080p games to it’s credit and that’s all. The way I see it this resolution talk is just clickbait for sad gaming sites like this and just petty ammunition for salty fanboys.

The shareplay feature seems great but it’s not exactly what it seems it has some pretty stiff restrictions.

!) Shareplay will limit us to only 60 minutes per session

      2) No playing games or watching movies anytime a friend is using the Share Play feature.

Sony also say’s that there won’t be any limitations to the amount of Share Play sessions but that can still change.

The way I see it the X1 is a well rounded system backed up by a great online infrastructure with just as many big exclusives as the PS4 and that easily justifies it’s purchase. Further more I feel that everyone who has rushed out to buy a PS4 will eventually but an X1 as well because when it comes down to it, games are games and which brand is irrelevant. We’ve seen this happen with the PS3 and it will happen again with the X1 which will increase it’s sales exponentially. All Microsoft needs to do is to continue delivering the big exclusives and people will buy it. Common sense.

just your choose of words give your self away that your hating on xbox one. better frame rate right keep saying that to your self go to digital foundry and go look at all the test. you are not a game developer so you need to learn to keep your mouth close. all xbox one games look and preform better on xbox the only reason the launch title under preformed was because the dev kits were not mature enough for some developers. why didn’t the developers behide wolfenstein, nba 2k, forza 5, max, kinect sports rivel, loco cycle, didn’t have a problem i’ll tell you two words lazy development. the ps4 architecture does everything by it self because it’s a more mature dev kit, once the xbox released the 10% sdk it has been a hole different ball game and games have been preforming much better then the ps4 in resolution and fps. also the game library of ps4 does not even come close to the one available on xbox one and by the way did you know that xbox has more 1080p at 60fps games then the ps4. please go do your homework before putting up articles so that you can gain hits, you have no real facts so stop disrespecting the game community and because i don’t appreciated it. if you know your stuff so well please right down how many games ps4 has over xbox one and i will glady send you the list. in conclusion not everybody can afford a high end gaming rig so a console is their best option so it really doesn’t matter that games like ryse, dead rising 3, and titanfall are available on pc, as long as you can’t play them on ps4 they will continue to be xbox exclusives consoles and that’s all that matter. so stop trying to be a wise guy do me that favor.

Right off the bat, the PlayStation 4 is the better platform in terms of rich and well balanced support of western made games from North America, Europe and eastern made games from Japan, Asia. If you want the best of both worlds then PlayStation is still the better all around well rounded platform.

During the 2008 -2010 global economic crisis I was hard pressed to choose what platform I would invest on. And after a long thorough research and study I settled for the PS3.

With so many important factors considered like:
      1. getting the balance right with the best of both worlds – Japanese & Western games support was very important criteria to me. It was the games support that mattered most.

And PS3 proved to be that platform and I got what I want.

      Exclusive Western Games:
      Little Big Planet Series
      Uncharted Series
      The Last of Us
      God of War
      Infamous Series
      Killzone
      Ratchet and Clank Series
      PlayStation Move games

      Multiplat Western Games:
      Batman Series
      CoD Series
      Lego Series
      Minecraft
      Red Dead Redemption

      Exclusive Japanese Games:
      ICO
      Shadow of the Colossus
      Ni No Kuni
      Puppeteer
      Gran Turismo Series
      Metal Gear Series
      Gundam Battle Operation
      Demon’s Souls
      Dragon’s Crown
      Resident Evil Remaster Series
      J Stars Victory Versus
      new Godzilla game

      Multiplat Japanese Games:
      Tales Series
      Final Fantasy Series
      Dark Souls Series
      Tekken Series
      Armored Core Series
      Sonic the Hedgehog games

Region free gaming and sharing and tons of free games though PS Plus Instant Game Collection which was a huge surprise where you find hidden gems of games you were not interested at first.

There is no doubt the same goes even more for PS4.

      2. The quality of the hardware itself.
My PS3 is now 5 years old and it is still in good working order.
My 360 is now long dead and gone. RROD 🙁 ) Heh, my old PSOne, PS2, & PSP outlives that MS machine!

      3. Power and Features that is Gaming centered
There is no doubt that PS4 delivers on its promise of Full HD games with all the bells and whistles thrown in.
Like in GTA V the PS4 version has better lighting, fog, smog, lens flares, and the infamous more foliage compared to the XB1 version.
Developers say that PS4 is easier to develop games on than XB1 so they can optimize their games more on PS4.

Well these are my humble opinion on the matter.

It is sad we cannot have a discussion without name calling. For the record, I have been in the media game 25+ years and have worked in the game industry as well. All the game companies know who we are and deal with me and the rest of the staff on a regular basis. Microsoft and Sony invite us to their conferences all the time so this stuff about my indentity being in question is a laugh. As for performance. The Xbox One has had issues running games in 1080 and 60 FPS. It could not do it for Call of Duty, Struggled for Diablo, Ultimate Evil Edition, and other games. MS has made strides to increase the performance, but I would say that 790 vs 1080 is a big difference. I also find it funny how nowhere did I say the Xbox One was a bad system, I simply stated that for my preferences, I prefer the PC and liked the extra power and titles of the PS 4 better to date.

It makes absolutely no sense to support a company that is constantly providing garbage products and supports anti-consumer policies. You’re a f*cking tool. MS is a hazard to the industry. The consumer knew this and rejected their sh*tty product when it released and now MS is desperately pushing for sales just to stay afloat. The problem is that they’re taking everyone down with them because of their despicable business model and gaming philosophy. People like you are a disturbing trend of ignorant twats flooding the industry with stupidity and awful games; MS is the Michael Bay of video games. And again, you’re a tool.

Just brush em off buddy, they are all obviously blind fanboys who didn’t take the time to actually read your piece or they would’ve seen the point…If someone owns a gaming PC, they have access to around 95% percent of Xbox exclusives, at this point & on last gen. There are only a small number of MS exclusive titles that don’t also release on PC, and if you aren’t a fan of Halo or Gears, it’s pretty redundant to buy into an Xbox One as well. This has nothing to do w/ platform preference and there’s no bias at play, just solid facts. At the end of the day, for better or worse, Sony & Nintendo don’t release their exclusive titles on PC as well, Microsoft do. If these commenters can’t understand that point then they aren’t worth even dignifying w/ an answer really.

But you said you even turned down an xbox one as a gift from family. That makes no sense at all, if you were a gamer then you would give it a try, especially if it was free, wouldn’t you? Unless you have some unhealthy hate and a hidden agenda.

So your message is that you are a seasoned gamer, and as a result the Xbox is not worthy of your attention. So you have to come onto the internet and shout that out in this bizarre article.

Your opinion comes across as bias, because your pushing your strange opinion as a gamer who does not even want to play games that are exclusive on a platform you could get for free, yet you are compelled to write this drivel about how we should care that you are a ‘gamer’ and pc and ps4 are your holy grail. you even mention the wiiu, lol.

You are a bit of a moron.

Lol..you know the author of this one if full of it. Anytime a so called journalist calls Xbox one”xbone” in his article, it says a lot about him. And another thing, when your article is supposed to be about Xbox and you mention ps4 no one will take you seriously. If consoles are all about exclusives to you then Xbox one should be the choice because Sony’s efforts have been plain dry for the first year. Go do some research before you write such fanboyish articles.

Nowhere in the body of the article do I call it an Xbone as you say. Also, the PS 4 needs to be mentioned by way of contrast to explain that I am not against Next Gen systems. Also, I have found Knack, Killzone, Infamous, and Little Big Planet 3 to be more enjoyable than any of the Xbox offerings to date. It is my personal tastes. I liked Sunset Overdrive and have played it a lot.
You say I should do research yet I have played several of the pending releases from both companies at PAX and E3, including many of the 2015 releases from Sony. So as I said before and I will say again, for me and my tastes, I have yet to see anything currently announced or available on the Xbox One that makes me want to have the system. I will see where they are next year as I would not mind having one but as I stated before, Sunset Overdrive and Halo are not enough of a reason for me. This is a personal choice, not a do not buy one, or its crap. Simply why I have not opted to do so yet.

As for the lack of research, I have played the system a lot, I have played all their current offerings and seen and played many of their pending titles and I stand by what I said, nice stuff, but nothing that appeals to me enough to purchase the system yet. The key word is yet.

It’s funny how every single person I this thread is bashing the OP, but only because they are Microsoft fanboys. As an owner of both systems, I agree with the article has to say. I have been finding myself drawn more towards the PS exclusives than the XB1. And when I have the choice to pick up the game for either, I’ve leaned toward the PS4 because of better performance. Argue all you want, but the truth of the matter is the PS4 just has better hardware. It’s better spec’d and more powerful, in the end that always equals better performance. There may be a few games that play well on the XB1, but they still look better in 1080.

And you bash him for using “xbone” in a comment (not the article), but then go on to use the PS4 abbreviation (without capitalization)… You have no room 5 talk. It says a lot about you people who read the title of the article, or skimmed it without really understanding what he was trying to say, and then come in and bash him for being a fan boy when that is exactly what you are too. Both systems have merits, but PS4 is selling better. That’s why Microsoft dropped the price for the holiday season, in the hopes of selling more units. Sony has not announced any price drop (to my knowledge) because they don’t need to.

And now I eagerly await people yelling and calling me names, because you are not grown up enough to accept an article that clearly states it is an opinion as just that… one person’s opinion. A person who clearly calls out that he has no qualms against the console, and encourages people to make their own choice based on preference. Attack away trolls… attack away.

I love all the hate, bad spelling, and such. First, I have played the system a lot at PAX, E3, other trade shows, and at staffers and friends who have one. We do have systems on staff so we do the reviews and we are not excluding the public or the company from coverage, we were at the E3 Microsoft Xbox conference by invite as an example. Simply put, I do not like the controller, I do not like the exclusives that are offered, and as such I am going to wait. I saw how our Wii U sat and gathered dust for a year after the first couple of months as there was nothing we wanted to play on it from an exclusive standpoint.
As for performance, it has been a documented fact that several games have not had the ability to run at 1080 as they have on the PS 4. Regardless of how much better it has become and how much a difference it makes, the facts remain the PS 4 has more power and to date runs more gamers better. I do not even care about that in my purchase decisions as a Wii U does not have the same power and that has some good exclusives. But like the Xbox One it took time for exclusives to come that I was interested in and for me justified my decision to purchase one. For now, I am waiting and do not want one as I know it would not get much use over the other platforms at this time. If you have one and love it great, at no point did I tell anyone not to get one. I said that for me, I do not like it or the announced exclusives enough to get one at this time and will wait. We talk about it all the time on the radio show I am on so this fanboy garbage is just that, we talk the system up a lot in the magazine as well.
