Box Trolls, starring the voices of Isaac Hempstead-Wright as Eggs, Ben Kingsley as Archibald Snatcher, and Elle Fanning as Winnie, is a family movie by the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman”.
The Box Trolls is a story about a human boy raised by creatures called box trolls. It’s a cute, seemingly silly movie, with a deeper underlying message of standing up for yourself, and climbing out of the role society has cast you in. It also provides a lesson in the dangers of allowing what you “want” your status to be affect the most important things in your life (your family) in a negative way.
The animation is amazingly detailed, full of color, and lively enough to keep us pulled in. It kept my 6 year old son engaged, and he said his favorite part was when the box trolls had to be naked. He was able to relate back to me most of what the more was “about”, in a 6-year-old manner, so it wasn’t over his head at all.
He says he loved it and would see it again. There was some adult humor thrown in, which got some chuckles from the grown-ups in the audience.
3 out of 5 stars.
