Unfortunately scheduling did not permit me to play Evolved but I did watch a live game in progress and got a good look at what Turtle Rock Studios, the developers of Left 4 Dead, are cooking up next. The pitch of the game is simple: One player plays the creature and four other players play as its human hunters. The creature starts small and weak, and it must hide from the players while hunting AI controlled fauna.
That player grows more and more powerful until they end up as a massive fire-breathing beast that can hold its own against the human players. The human characters all have their own distinct abilities and roles. You have a Jurassic Park-hat-wearing hunter who sports a harpoon which can help immobilize the beast, a sniper/medic female who looks light but incredibly mobile with a gravity-defying jetpack, a heavy with a chaingun and energy shield and another heavily armored soldier with what looks like a lightning gun. I’m not sure if these load outs are customizable, but the general roles are set up as such. The visuals look absolutely stunning, and it’s shaping up to be one of the best looking multiplayer titles of the year.
