As part of the promotion for the pending release of “Riddick: on Blu-ray and DVD we got to speak with actor Matt Nable about his experience working on the film with Vin Diesel and bringing the elder Johns to life.
GVK: I am going to do my best not to ask questions that you have been asked countless times but there are a few things I would love to hear directly from you. Can you tell us about how you came to be cast in the film?
MN: I had gone in to audition for one of the supporting characters and David Twohy ended up casting me in the role so I would say it was being in the right place at the right time.
GVK: Going in did you know of your characters relationship to Johns in the first film and how did this affect your preparations as I loved the fact that they found a way to establish this continuity with the first film.
MN: It worked very well with the previous film and setting up my character and the events of the film. David and I went over the character and the connection between my character and helped make a very organic connection between the films.
GVK: The movie was filmed mainly in Montreal wasn’t it?
MN: The entire film was done there. We started in Jan of 2012 and finished in March of 2012. It was very cold.
GVK: Since Vin plays Riddick as this ultimate badass with plenty of swagger, how did you prep against this as it must have been hard to be adversarial characters to him that posed a real threat to him.
MN: The key was finding a balance as the film was very well cast and I saw my characters as being not good or bad but simply wanting information. It was this information that fed into his backstory.
Vin is very giving and despite the physical nature of the character he is actually very soft spoken and gentle in reality. He is very passionate about the character as well as the script and the film and it was great to be around.
GVK: What was the most challenging part of the film for you and the most memorable?
MN: We had to film one night on Vin’s last day and it was a scene where the monsters are coming up from the mud. There was all this rain and it was cold and we had to get it done as Vin had to leave in the morning so I was very glad we were able to get all if it done in one day.
The most memorable was the first time meeting Vin and working with him.
GVK: I hope I am not putting you on the spot with this one but I have heard that Vin and David had hopes for at least two more films and while I am sure the DVD sales will play a big part in the decision as well, but have they spoken to you about future films as I am sure Johns will factor into them.
MN: The film did very well and everyone seems to have been very happy with it. There is plenty of story still for Johns and Riddick and while I know David has some other things to work on I know he and Vin would love to do more and I would love to be back as well.
Riddick is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Home Entertainment on 1/14/14
