Paramount Pictures fifth DVD season of Star Trek The Next Generation is here and it follows up the success of the previous sets. The set is packaged in an attractive collectors box and contains all 26 episodes of the second season uncut. Highlights of the season include the episode “Darmok” where the value of communication is stressed as well as the groundbreaking and moving episode “The Inner Light”, where Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), lives out an entire life in the span of an episode. Season 5 also beings the return of Mr. Spock in the two part “Unification”, and the return of the Borg in the episode “I Borg” that causes the crew of the Enterprise to think of the Borg in a new light. The continual development of the characters is great, as Data (Brent Spiner), continues to explore his quest for humanity, and Mr. Worf (Michael Dorn) struggles with raising his child as a single parent, and attempting to gain his lost honor in the eyes of his people. While the season finale “Times Arrow” lacks the impact of the previous two season finales, it is still solid entertainment, and will delight fans both old and new. While I would have liked to see the episodes in wide screen format, the transfer to DVD is solid. The sound quality is first rate. While the episodes are the main draw of the set, the attractive menus and behind the scenes features ensure that this is a volume that like the others, is a must have for all fans.
