The Anabella Hotel: Anaheim

There is a jewel of a hotel within easy walking distance from Disneyland where the lobby, complete with welcoming fire and hospitable staff, greets you with striking red and earth tones and the concierge service is just as warm.

After a long, busy day at the nearby Disney parks, we made our way to our room, enjoying the well-manicured, tropical landscape. The hotel is comprised of several units that and courtyards enlivened by Spanish-influenced fountains, décor, and a pool that features a swim up bar.
As sophisticated as the grounds looked, it did not prepare us for the elegance of our spacious concierge suite. A private patio entrance secluded by foliage with a comfortable-looking lounge chair for relaxing led us to our room. Guest rooms have either hardwood or deluxe carpet flooring. Ours had hardwood flooring with a luxurious king-sized bed, second twin-size bed located in a nook, and a flat screen television. The inclusion robes, slippers a plate of cookies and mineral water was a very warm and friendly touch.

The Divine™ pillow-top bed was so comfortable and just what we needed after a long day at the parks. The spacious granite bathroom was much larger than found in most hotels. A specially equipped desk with an ergonomically designed swivel chair allowed me to get some work done. The hotel does offer Wi-Fi for an additional charge which can be purchased by the day, week or month.

We had the complimentary classic breakfast for two included with the room at the Tangerine Grill which offers a continental breakfast as well as a buffet and many other dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Not only was the food very good, but the prices were very reasonable. The Anabella also offers a gift shop with snacks, souvenirs, and sundries, as well as a salon and spa.

The Anabella is also next to the Anaheim Convention Center and as such, is ideal for events such as Blizzcon, and D23 which always draw big crowds. As a Disney Good Neighbor hotel, they also offer discount tickets to the park and other area attractions. Guests wishing to avoid walking can take a shuttle for $5.00 which leaves every twenty minutes from the hotel.

Our only regret is that we did not have more time to experience this hotel as it was the perfect complement to our day at the park and ideal for those looking for close proximity to Disneyland yet enjoy the comforts of home with a full-service hotel.

Universal Citywalk Rings in 2013 in Style

one of our L.A. area regional reps, Asante Hawkins, got to ring in 2013 in a big way at Universal City Walk, the mix of music, lights, entertainment, and attractions, drew a huge audience and here is the recap of her evening.

New Years Eve on City Walk was amazing and very exciting. We saw lights and the people that were there were filled with energy and the promise of what 2013 will bring. Local news media were out in force covering the New Years Eve events at Universal and a wide range of guests were on hand. We saw a guy with a huge Mohawk who had Transformers on one side and 2013 on the other side and really caught the mood of the evening perfectly.

As we kept walking and we saw people flying in the skydiving simulator and the people watching it were very entertained, almost as much as those taking part in the ride. For those looking for music, City Walk did not disappoint as there was also Christmas music being played throughout City Walk.

Despite the cold the impressive entertainment more than made up for the chill in the air. There were two events happening when we arrived, one event was at the 5 towers the other event was in the front next to the Universal Globe. The 5 towers offered an impressive set of talent including Jamar Rogers, Diego Val and Dj Howly. They were really good. Jamar Rogers and Diego Val are from the voice and they sounded amazing in person. Their energy really fired up the already excited audience.

Many people wearing 2013 hats and were highly excited to bring in the new year. I didn’t get to see the whole concert but what I saw was amazing. I loved it!! My husband and I enjoyed the big crowds of people all taking in the magic of the evening. Security was present throughout the evening every once in a while telling everyone to stay safe and if we drink then to drink responsibly which helped ensure a safe evening for all.

Since I love to shop, we went to the Grinchmas store and saw all the things that they were selling which was a dazzling array of items. Of course there was also so many great dining options which made making a choice very tough.

The fireworks that followered were highly impressive and between that and hearing and seeing the artists perform was very entertaining. It was a great way to go into the new year and I highly suggest you make your plans for next year as City Walk is the place to be.

Phoenix ZooLights 2012

If you want to hang on to that feel-good holiday spirit, the Phoenix Zoo is still celebrating through January 6, 2013 with its annual ZooLights spectacular. This year ZooLights lights up the zoo with 3.6 million lights and more than 700 glimmering light displays. There’s still time to make ZooLights part of your family holiday traditions and enjoy one of the largest holiday light shows in the country.

On this year’s visit, we were entertained by the competing marching bands from Texas Christian University and Michigan State University who were in town to face off at the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Their spirited performances added to the music heard all throughout the park we strolled taking in the displays.

Most impressive was the new MUSIC IN MOTION show in and around the lake – a dazzling light show that features the music, “Wizards in Winter” by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Synchronized to more than 15,000 lights, it utilizes a full range sound system and plays every few minutes. Remember to bring your camera to capture the beautiful water reflections of the floating light tubes, dancing trees surrounding the lake and the 24-foot in diameter sparkling sphere that can be viewed from several locations around the lake.

Sunday through Thursday, it’s $9 for members and $10 for non-members. Fridays and Saturday and “Any Night” tickets are $13 for members and $14 for non-members. Kids 2 years and younger are free. While there’s limited animal viewing, the twinkling lights and more than fun light displays will lead you to other attractions like Jengo the talking giraffe and “real” snow that greets you at The Polar Slide. Enjoy a Stingray Bay encounter or take a ride on the Endangered Species Carousel, a camel and or catch a tour on the wagon rides.

Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill

With Halloween rapidly approaching, folks looking for a great time and a good scare should look no further than Jack and Jill’s haunted Hill in Phoenix Arizona. This your operating from a much larger facility than they had in years past the fiendishly clever locale offers some pleasant twists on the standard haunted house attractions will doing it at an affordable price.
Tickets are just $10 and for those wishing to avoid the lines, VIP passes can be obtained for $18 which allow visitors to spend considerably less time waiting to experience the attraction.

As with last year, the attraction begins with a multimedia presentation that documents numerous missing individuals who were last seen going into a suspicious mine which was later closed by authorities for the greater public’s safety. It is disclosed that a new entrance has been discovered
and as such your adventure begins. Moving through darkened mazes, this will come upon all sorts of horrors as they attempt to learn the fate of Jack and Jill. While the approach is fairly standard in that guest move through darkened corridors before stopping at a specific locale were scripted event occurs, what really makes this traction standout the quality of the acting and special effects.

I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises but needless to say animatronic devices and other enhanced special effects take this attraction to a whole new level. While I found last year’s house to be a little creepier due to the extra darkness, I have to admit that the longer experience combined with the great visuals and acting certainly made this fantastic experience for horror fans. When you consider the fact that many other haunted attractions charge between 25 and $35 for admission the value of Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill makes this an experience you won’t want to forget.

Universal Studios 2012 Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Studios -Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights
By Asabe Hawkins

This Halloween season Universal Studios opened their very popular Halloween Horror Nights in late September. During my coverage of the opening evening, I got more than my fair share of chills.

The start of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios is always thrilling. Skewed & Reviewed was invited to attend the Eyegore Awards which honored various celebrities for their work in the horror genre. The awards ceremony was held inside a hall done up like a campsite with picnic tables and 2 cabins with Campsite #666 written throughout the room. Hosted by McKenzie Westmore from the show Face Off, we were feted with great food and an unlimited bar. The awards were for the scariest movies and the actors and actresses in them. In attendance were Bridget Marquardt, Alice Cooper, Chad Michael Murray and Angelica Vale, just to name a few.

Halloween Horror Night is filled with vampires, witches, scary clowns and this year, the Walking Dead. The loud noise of a saw machine going off behind you will make you jump. The mazes are the best but be ready to scream and run. Four Scare Zones, Silent Hill, Toyz, Witches, and Klownz are setup and each is more disturbing than the last.

Visitors have to make your way through thick fog to get to the Walking Dead maze. Along the way were statues of zombies, and if that wasn’t creepy enough, killer clowns popped out at us while a clown on a stage made jokes at people who were walking by.

The first maze that we were escorted to was the Walking Dead which is based on the extremely popular television show. Dead bodies in bags were spread around a coroner van, inside which there was a zombie eating a dead corpse. I have to admit that seeing a zombie eating a corpse was terrifying but it did not compare to having the dead jump out and try to grab me. When we entered we saw bodies with their insides coming out which really set the tone for the maze. While walking through the dead bodies hanging from the ceilings, there were arms trying to grab me through the doors as well. One room contained a dead girl on the floor and a dead man on the couch. It looked like the man killed the girl and then himself. We passed through a hallway with legs hanging from the ceiling only to find that the zombies followed us out.

The next maze was called Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. More and more clowns with knives and axes were popping out. In the front of Alice Cooper there was a huge snake head with fire around it. Before we went in we had to put on 3D glasses. When we got inside the pictures and colors popped out. There we demon clown babies trying to get out of their crib and hanging from the ceiling. There was a curtain where we had to go through. Behind the curtain was a caged man trying to get out. There was a doctor experimenting on a man by electrocuting him through the heart. There was a woman who wanted plastic surgery and she was trying to attach the part of her face that had been removed. The clowns had axes and knives and did a convincing job of trying to kill us while dead clown dancers tried to convince us to come back.

If this was not enough, the popular Tram tour is now the Terror Tram, and involved an attack by The Walking Dead. Several of the park’s popular rides were up and running including Transformers: The Ride 3D, Revenge of the Mummy, The Simpsons Ride and Jurassic Park- In the Dark.

There was also a great live show based on the Bill and Ted movies called Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventures.

Walking about were monsters trying to grab other people. With the fog everywhere making it even scarier, you walk around with great fear, not knowing who or what will come out at you.

Universal Studies uses the full talents of the legendary film and television studio to bring to life the best of the best in ultimate Halloween scares. From the top-notch sets, makeup, effects, and acting, it is as close to being in a horror movie environment as you can get.

Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood is a great place to go to get scared and have an amazing time, and is a must visit attraction during Halloween season.

Stand Up Live: Phoenix AZ

Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Phoenix Arizona, the best and brightest in comedy gather at Stand Up Live Comedy Theater. Drew Carey, Kevin Smith, Rex Navararette, Joe McHale, Chris Hardwick, and Wayne Brady are just a few of the extremely impressive of comedy headliners that have graced the facility recently. There is more to the venue than just the biggest names in comedy, as the facility offers top-notch food and beverage service for a one-stop entertainment destination.

The spacious club offers very comfortable accommodations that can handle everything from an intimate table for couples to large groups and private booth areas. The menu was impressive and offered shareable fare like wings, nachos, fries, and jumbo fried shrimp. Hungrier guests may enjoy Southwest favorites like quesadillas and tacos, sliders or burgers. Heartier options include steak sandwiches, pasta and grilled salmon, while the health-conscious also have the option of salads. For those who can’t decide, the theater offers combos titled Emcee, Feature or Headliner. We picked the Headliner and enjoyed a chicken quesadilla, mac ‘n cheese and cheeseburger sliders.

Items on the menu range between $7-$19. The club does have a two drink minimum and so for some guests, the $14 bottomless soft drinks in a collectors cup is the best bet. There is also very good dessert menu with items ranging from $6 to $8.00 dollars.

My wife and I enjoyed the combination plate as well as a basket of French fries which was a perfect prelude to the evening. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous and I appreciated how efficient they were with bringing your food, refilling our drinks, and clearing our table without once getting in the way of enjoying the show.

The stage was very well lit and the noise amplification and acoustics of the facility was first rate. We were able to hear every word of the headliner which on our visit was the fantastic Filipino comedian Rex Navarette. We watched Rex perform twice before in Washington, and he truly seemed to be excited about his first visit to Arizona.

Even though it’s in downtown, the venue offered three hours of complimentary parking and for guests who wish to stay longer to take in some fantastic music at the Copper Blues after the show, parking is just $2 an hour.

The impressive array of guests is more than enough to have us looking forward to future visits, but when combined with first-class service and venue, and the enjoyable and diverse menu, dinner and a show at Stand Up Live is a perfect evening out for any occasion.

Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, CA

Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, a move to Arizona was an extremely difficult decision to make. Aside from leaving most of my family behind, I’d also be leaving the beautiful Cascade Mountains, lush greenery and most importantly, easy access to the ocean.

One year later, I still miss Washington’s mountains and trees, but an easy 5 hour drive to San Diego keeps my love of the “big water” sated. And it doesn’t hurt that San Diego, whether overcast or sunny, is always a fun place to explore. On a recent trek to get our fill of the Pacific, we stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt where, according to their website, “the best of San Diego is right outside” their door.

From our room on the 22nd floor, the best of San Diego was right outside our window. I fell in love with the view of San Diego Bay and at night was delighted by the colorful city skyline. The room was a corner unit with a wrap-around view of the bay and the city. With a king-sized bed, a richly appointed room with a gorgeous view and a bathroom full of amenities (including toothpaste!) and a comfortable robe, I was content to stay in and just indulge in a little bit of relaxing luxury.

But breakfast called and we made our way to Lael’s, one of the hotel’s elegant restaurants. In a spacious dining room fit for royalty, a sumptuous breakfast buffet awaited that offered fruits, French toast, bacon, sausages, bagels, pastries, oatmeal with all kinds of toppings and an omelet bar with numerous ingredients to customize your meal. Our server was a delightful and entertaining gentleman who kept our glasses filled with fresh-squeezed orange juice and our coffee cups warmed with strong, bold coffee.

To walk off your breakfast, take a walk to roam Seaport Village. The Gaslamp Quarter is also a short hike from the hotel. The Manchester Grand Hyatt is also just down the street from the San Diego Convention Center, and my husband and I joked about maybe lining up now to be first to get into one of the San Diego Comicon panels. Petco Park, the San Diego Zoo, the Midway Museum and Coronado Island are nearby attractions. We took a quick drive to SeaWorld to enjoy the park’s newest ride, The Manta.

After a long day playing tourist, guests can recover nicely by booking an appointment at Kin Spa to be pampered and rejuvenated with a massage and/or facial at the spa facility in the hotel. The spa offers services for both men and women, or you and your significant other can unwind by turning on the 46” flat screen TV. If you must work, the hotel offers high-speed internet access for a fee, available in all guest rooms and in the Grand Lobby Bar or Redfield’s Sports Bar. Also for a fee are a full range of services from faxing, photocopying, to charger rentals in the hotel’s business center.

Whether you’re traveling for pleasure or business, the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego is definitely the hotel that can accommodate both easily, keeping you productive and feeling pampered at the same time. To check out their latest specials, visit www.manchestergrandhyatt.com.

Stay, Dine, and Play in Buena Park, CA

During a recent visit to California, we stayed at the Radisson Suites in Buena Park.  Our check in was extremely prompt, and the extremely helpful front desk staff not only provided me with a map of the hotel but also pointed out various points of interest in the local area. Upon learning our plans included driving to Los Angeles, I was given easy directions to the nearby freeway entrances as well as expected commute times.

Our room was extremely accommodating and I was impressed with the size of the front room which offered a desk large enough for both my wife and I to set up our laptops and still have ample work space on either side.  The suite layout flowed well, and the comfortable couch and chairs were situated to give a great viewing angle for the flat screen TV.  The front room also had kitchen counter area that had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker.  The French doors into the suite had shutters that when opened allowed us to look out onto the courtyard and definitely was a nice change of pace from the standard hotel entrances.

The bathroom is very nice as not only did the shower have very good water temperature and pressure, but there was also a very nice selection of high quality shampoos, lotions, and conditioners that were provided for us.

The bedroom area had ample closet space as well as drawers which allowed us to unpack and truly settle in.  There was a second flat screen television in the bedroom which had all the channels including complimentary HBO.

A much unexpected surprise was the bed which was a Sleep Number bed.  While it did take a little bit of getting used to in order to find the number that suited us best, especially when we have become so accustomed to memory foam mattresses, it was still an extremely comfortable experience.

As we got up the next morning for breakfast, my wife noted that the layout reminded her of Melrose Place, with all the units surrounding a common courtyard.  But unlike Melrose Place, the landscaping was lush with palm trees, and fountains. The hotel offers a fitness area with treadmills, as well as a very nice pool and Jacuzzi.  It made one wonder if at one time the hotel had been an apartment or condo complex.

The complimentary breakfast buffet was an appreciated perk. The buffet featured not only bacon, potatoes, sausage, scrambled eggs, cereals, breads, juices, coffee, oatmeal, Danishes, and fruit, there was also a custom-made omelet bar.

After we enjoyed our breakfast we set out for a day in the town, and were really happy to experience the Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) system. The bus takes riders to points of interest in the community such as Knott’s Berry Farm, Medieval Times, The Pirate Dinner Theater, as well as Disneyland. The ability to purchase a single ride or pass consisting of several days is ideal for those who have not driven to the area or who wish to take a break from dealing with traffic and parking fees.  The air-conditioned trolleys come by on a regular basis and run until a half-hour after Disneyland closes at midnight.

Returning to the hotel, we were really impressed with the afternoon reception which allowed us to enjoy several free snacks as well as complementary drinks Monday through Thursday.  The restaurant also had specials for different days the week.  Everything from tacos to Buffalo wings was available and guests took advantage of this as they sat in the recreation area watching the NBA playoffs on the big screen.

Where We Dined

I decided to take my wife to Downtown Disney for dinner at Goofy’s Kitchen for an evening of good food and character interaction.  As we walked up and down the numerous shops after dinner, I have to tell you what a nice experience it was not to have to worry about making our way back to the car and being able to board the bus back to the hotel as well as see the tired but happy faces of those who are returning to the hotel after a long day at the various tourist attractions.

Our second day allowed us to have a little more leisurely pace as my wife enjoyed the free wireless Internet by the pool as we both worked on some stories before we took in the sights of the local area.  That evening, we walked over to Medieval Times which was located right next to our hotel.  While we had attended the Medieval Times in Las Vegas I have to say this is truly a much better experience.

Entering the castle we were assigned our knight’s color before we roamed the souvenir and bar area while waiting to be seated. This gave us plenty of time to visit the horses in their glass-enclosed stables and read about the history of the various forces that would be in the show.

Once we were seated in the arena our very friendly and helpful servers informed us that while there is no cutlery in accordance with times, there would be various drink options and went over our selections. The dinner started off with very impressive focaccia bread and tomato soup, and the entrée consisted of a roast chicken half and barbecue rib combo and potato wedges.  My wife noted that it is usually very tricky to prepare large quantities of food in advance because timing is important.  You do not want food sitting around being warmed as patrons wait to be served, but at the same time you have to ensure that the meals are done in a timely fashion.  While there were some parts the chicken there were a bit dry and chewy I can tell you that by and large the meat was extremely juicy and tender and that the rib was simply fantastic. Dessert was tasty as well as the apple turnover which topped off a great meal.

Now food is simply a small part of the experience at Medieval Times. The live-action show featuring jousting, sword fighting, and other equestrian skills were highly entertaining.  The cast was extremely energetic and their performance, unlike the Vegas show, kept the cheesiness factor to a minimum.  With a king and a princess presiding over the lively event, the audience was encouraged to participate with cheers while the knights vied for the loudest ovation.

There was humor mixed in and the knights openly encouraged those seated in the corresponding color sections to cheer for their success.  The sword fighting was impressive and offered some real twists and turns that kept the audience at the edge of their seats. There are numerous souvenir and gift opportunities available as well and there is a dungeon of horrors that guests can view prior to the show available for an additional fee.

Where We Played

Of course no trip to Buena Park would be complete without visiting the legendary Knott’s Berry Farm. I appreciated that even though it was checkout time, the hotel suggested that we leave our car in the parking lot and simply walk to the park.  This gave us an opportunity to take note of the many restaurants and shops all within a 5 minute walk from the hotel, as up until then, we have directed our travels largely in a different direction.  Everything from a Claim Jumper restaurant to Subway and IHOP were available, as well as other business and dining services.  It was extremely refreshing to see a tourist area that offered so many options to both the community and its visitors.

Upon entering Knott’s Berry Farm, we decided to go on the Sierra Sidewinder which is a coaster that rotates during the ride.  It is a bit unnerving to go from being at the front of the car to facing backwards as the ride accelerates through a series of high-speed turns where you cannot tell the direction you are going.  Needless to say it was quite an experience as were our old favorites such as the Log Ride, Pony Express, Bigfoot Rapids, Ghost Rider, Silver Bullet, and countless other enjoyable rides along the boardwalk and Old West sections.  It was so nice to see the Calico Mine Train and the old railroad again because I member those for my first visit to Knott’s as a small child.

I also noticed that the annual passes are an incredible value. For less than two visits to the park guests can get unlimited access for the year.  There are various degrees of annual passes which offer such additions like the Soak City Water Park and early access to the park.

Taking on the park can be extremely tiring and we were pleased to include an enjoyable lunch at Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant.  Founded by the late Cordelia Knott, the restaurant has served amazing chicken dishes to customers who often wait in long lines for their chance to be seated.  It was the success of the restaurant and the long lines that inspired Walter Knott to build a Wild West town which eventually became the Knott’s Berry Park back in the 1950s.  The Park was opened before Disneyland and touts itself as America’s first theme park.

Even though there are plenty of other options on the menu I have never had anything other than the fried chicken dinner. Four pieces of chicken, served with homemade rolls and Knott’s Berry jam, salad, chicken noodle soup, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and a huge slice of pie for $15.99 make this an incredible value.  The chicken is not only fresh and juicy, but the pieces are so large and filling that to go boxes are very common.

There is a lunch size version available for those wishing a smaller serving but when one adds in the pre-and post-dinner items it is an incredible value.  I also recommend boysenberry punch instead of iced tea and soda as it is a truly unique and refreshing drink. For those in a hurry you can also get the famed chicken to go from the nearby fast service counter.

There are several restaurants and shops including Pink’s Hot Dogs in the surrounding Knott’s area which truly makes it an enjoyable day for the entire family.

We really loved our time at the Radisson Suites and wish we could have stayed longer, as the days simply flew by.  From the very comfy and accommodating room, to the very enjoyable complimentary hot breakfast and afternoon snacks, the very friendly and helpful staff to the many dining and entertainment options within walking distance, this stay was one of the best hotel experiences in recent memory and one we hope to enjoy again on our next visit to this charming city.

MANTA At Sea World San Diego

Recently we had a chance to check out the brand-new manta exhibit at Sea World San Diego. The attraction combines the new interactive area for live manta rays with a state-of-the-art roller coaster. The interactive area allows riders and non-riders alike to enjoy the graceful beauty of bat rays and fishes. The new 100,000-gallon aquarium lets you see the rays through eight large acrylic windows, as well as touch and feed bat rays at the attraction’s shallow touch-pool. If seeing and touching isn’t’ enough, the new Manta roller coaster allows riders to get a sense of what it’s like to be one of these fascinating creatures as it twists, soars and dives.

On entering the attraction, guests are given the option to proceed to the ride or to make their way to the viewing area.  Navigating a very nicely landscaped environment, we were soon waiting for our turn to board.  The line moved very quickly and even though it was a recently opened attraction, our wait was less than 15 minutes. One of the first things I noticed was the ample room provided in the seat. At 6’4”, I’m often forced to cram myself into various rides but that was not the case with manta.  The restraining system pulled down comfortably over me, and gave me ample room for my legs which I did not even have to cross. My wife sat next me and it made me appreciate that we were not crammed right on top of one another as we have been for many rides in the past.

The ride begins in a dark tunnel that soon comes to life on a 270-degree enveloping screen, showing mantas swimming in the sea. Just as this calm and peaceful setting sinks in riders shoot forward at an impressive rate of speed as you accelerate down the track.  While you never get extremely high off the ground, there are some impressive twist and turns along the way as you twist, and turn through the tracks. One impressive segment had as briefly turning sharply to the left and then sharply to the right before doing a dip and a very tight turn and drop.  While I wouldn’t call it scary it was certainly exhilarating and the feel of the wind in your hair as you were whisked along the track in the gorgeous San Diego weather was worth the thrill.

Upon returning to the station many of the riders erupted in applause to show their enjoyment for the ride.  One of the things I found very interesting was the now common industry-standard of taking a photo during a dynamic moment of the ride has been given a new twist with Manta. They do not wait until you’re right in the middle of a dropper high-speed turns take the photo, rather they take it right at the start as you accelerate from a stationary position to the maximum ride speed. The look of shock and exhilaration on the riders’ faces was truly humorous as we got to see several of the photos after we’ve completed the ride.

A very short walk leads riders to the interactive exhibit with mantas and while it is not my first time being up close the remarkable creatures I found that I’ve had a newfound appreciation for their grace and agility after experiencing the exhibit.

SeaWorld continues to blaze new paths and offering thrilling rides while maintaining their primary mission as a conservation park that educates the guests. It not only produced a top-level coaster attraction but greatly complemented their existing rides such a Shipwreck Rapids and Journey to Atlantis without compromising the focus on the magnificent creatures within.

Escape to Embassy Suites Hotel Anaheim – South

With so much to do in the city of Anaheim, picking a hotel to stay isn’t always the top priority. Many convince themselves all they need is a place to sleep, shower and change their clothes before they head out to theme parks, shopping centers, tourist attractions and beaches. But what if your hotel could be as much an escape as the rest of your getaway? On a recent trip to Southern California, we found our stay at Embassy Suites Hotel Anaheim – South to be a vacation within our working vacation.

This was our first stay in an Embassy Suites Hotel, and the lush, open-air atrium that welcomed us was a nice surprise. Koi ponds spanned a dining area where we discovered a Manager’s Reception was being held. Every evening the hotel offers free cocktails and snacks, so if you check in between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, you could find yourself heading to your hotel room with a buzz. But why shouldn’t you start your vacation with a free margarita?

True to their name, the hotel offers two-room suites. We found ours spacious and comfortably furnished. With a private bedroom and a separate living room, we had plenty of room to isolate work from vacation. We immediately turned the dining table into our workspace and made use of the WiFi. But after two busy days of running ourselves ragged at a convention, it was a toss-up between putting our feet up on the couch or crashing on the king-sized bed and turning on one of the two flat screen TVs. The bed won. When your agenda is packed with places to go, sometimes a comfy bed could be a detriment to getting your day started. But because relaxation was the goal, we had no complaints.

The suite also has a wet bar, mini-refrigerator, microwave and a single-serve coffeemaker. While there are plenty of dining options in the immediate area from fast food to sit-down restaurants, the hotel also offers room service and their own restaurant, Serengeti. In the mornings, to be able to enjoy a free cooked-to-order breakfast without leaving the hotel was a wonderful bonus. As this was the vacation part of our working vacation, we relaxed in the atrium surrounded by verdant flora, soothed by sound of the Koi ponds and 14-foot waterfall, with an animatronic lion watching over us.

If you’re so inclined, the hotel also offers a complimentary fitness center featuring impressive equipment that’s open 24/7. Just a few steps from the fitness center on the first floor was the exit to the swimming pool and Jacuzzi area. While we didn’t need it on this trip, it was comforting to know that the hotel came with a business center to provide guests complimentary 24/7 access to a variety of convenient services like WiFi, printing and faxing.

Business has taken us to Anaheim many times, but this was the first time we eschewed the more popular tourist spots to take leisurely drive down Harbor Boulevard to hit the beaches and enjoy the surf and sand at Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. Embassy Suites Anaheim – South is conveniently located near many of the city’s most prominent attractions. With Disneyland Park®, Disney California Adventure® Park, and Downtown Disney® District nearby, expect a lot of families staying at the hotel. For shopping, entertainment and sports adventures, The Outlets at Orange, the Grove of Anaheim, Honda Center and Angel Stadium of Anaheim are all within three miles of this Anaheim hotel. Universal Studios® Hollywood is also an easy drive, while those who want more nature than film sets can take a ferry to Catalina Island from Newport Beach or Long Beach.

With their relaxing decor, accommodating staff, the restful suites, excellent location and hospitable dining options, making Embassy Suites Anaheim – South a part of your travel plans ensures an escape to make your getaway complete, whether you’re traveling for business, pleasure, or both.

For more information or to check out their latest offers, visit Embassy Suites Hotel Anaheim – South’s website.

Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium

As soon as you enter the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium, you’ll know
this isn’t your average zoo. There’s a more open, rustic and natural
feel as you stroll down unpaved paths and observe the zoo’s
inhabitants, many up close and personal.

We started our visit with a 5/8-mile long narrated train ride through
the plains of Africa where antelope, gazelles and ostriches roamed
freely. The proximity to beautiful creatures, unconstrained by cages
and enclosures made this an enchanting experience. In fact, we
witnessed the first few minutes of a new little African deer’s life as
the train passed by the mother cleaning her newborn fawn.

Next we hoped on a boat to travel through Arizona’s version of
Australia where we exclaimed over red and gray kangaroos, even an
albino wallaby, flightless emu and kookaburras. Our boat was escorted
at times by black swans and ducks.

Back on land, we continued our relaxed trek through the park taking in
exhibits that included primates, peacocks, white tigers, wolves,
llamas, camels, meerkats and big cats. Zebras came up to the fence to
be admired by us. We climbed up a 12 foot platform to feed giraffes,
and enjoyed a few restful minutes to watch them glide gracefully
across the open fields.

For an even higher view of the park, there’s a skyride that takes you
from the southwest to the northeast corners of the park and back. The
bird’s eye view is as thrilling as it is peaceful, as you fly over
more exhibits of gazelles, oryx, African wild dogs and the kangaroo
walkabout.

To cool off, we headed over to the Log Flume ride. This ride lulls you
into a tranquil state as you enjoy the sights and sounds of the
primates that play on three islands as the log ride circles and takes
riders past aquatic animals and through the aquarium’s South Pacific
Reef tunnel tank–the longest acrylic tunnel in Arizona. The tranquil
state was soon lost when we splashed down 3 stories as it returned us
to the boarding platform.

But we were refreshed and ready to take on the Aquarium section of the
park. In the Diversity of Life in Water, there are touch tanks,
turtles, crocodiles, jelly fish and many more species. The Wild &
Wonderful exhibit houses penguins, eels, and a seahorse reef among
other wonders of the sea. For sharks, stingrays and piranha, enter the
Predators exhibit.

Added in November 2011, Dragon World puts on display giant ectotherms,
today’s “dragons” – crocodiles, alligators, caimans, monitors and
lizards. Included in this exhibit are giant Aldabra tortoises and a
giant snake, a 200-pound, 20-feet long reticulated python.

Located along the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area in
Litchfield Park, the Wildlife World Zoo has been a wonderful family
attraction since 1984. When the Aquarium was added, Wildlife World
became home to Arizona’s largest collection of exotic animals with
over 6000 animals representing more than 600 species. The zoo boasts
annual visits of more than 500,000 people.

While paying $2 to $4 for the individual rides in addition to an
entrance fee seems dear, as a privately owned and operated
institution, Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium relies solely on gate
attendance and retail sales to generate its operating and capital
budgets. It receives zero public tax support, grants, or financial
donations. WWZA provides educational and outreach programs and
promotes wildlife restoration and conservation by contributing money
and in-kind support and expertise to dozens of local, national and
international organizations.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and with WWZA’s expansion with a
fourth aquarium building opening soon, we are look forward to
discovering more of what the zoo has to offer.

Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium is located at 16501 W. Northern Ave.,
Litchfield Park, AZ. Open seven days a week, 365 days a year,
including all holidays. Zoo exhibits are open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. (last zoo admission is at 5:00 p.m.) Aquarium exhibits are open
from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Daytime admission includes access to the
zoo and aquarium. Special reduced evening admission to Aquarium-Only
is available after 5:00 p.m.

Wondercon 2012

By Desi Javier

Art, comics, nerds, writers, artists, nerds, celebrities, geeks, nerds, and oh yes, sexy cosplayers. Wondercon 2012, the annual comic and pop culture convention normally held in San Francisco, was held this year at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Being a first time comic convention attendee, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by all the artwork on display, writers and artists in the comic book industry, and the enthusiastic fans.

Besides geeking out at the buffet of artwork and comics, there were also a few celebrities there. Lou Ferrigno, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and a the hosts of G4‘s Attack of the Show just to name a few. Some were signing autographs, others were in panels discussing upcoming films like the Snow White reboot. As for the celebs of the comic book industry, some notable ones were in attendance such as Arthur Adams, Jim Lee, Mark Waid, and Ryan Sook.

Even with all the celebs around, the real stars of the convention were all the cosplayers decked out as their favorite comic/video game/movie persona. They were all around and I couldn’t help but stare in awe at how detailed and intricate (or skimpy) some of these costumes were. And unlike the the real celebrities, they were a lot easier to photograph and talk to.

Other things to do were to check out the various games and panels being held. There were trading card games, conventional role playing games and a few video games. Most notable of the video games was the new Resident Evil: Racoon City and Kid Icarus Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS. Among the trading card games were standby’s like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!

There were many panels, each covering different types of mediums. From comics, art, films, tv, and video games. One of the panels that I sat in was for DC Unlimited. The main discussion was about their popular New 52 reboot. Another panel was for the new Naruto video game: Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations. It was the last panel of the convention and it was fun getting some insight on what the creators did to incorporate as many characters (72 to be exact) into the game to appease the rabid fans of the games and anime.

WonderCon was moved to Anaheim this year while Moscone Center South in San Francisco, WonderCon’s home for the last 6 years, underwent renovation. The Anaheim Convention Center is an ideal location for such a convention. It’s easy to get to from 2 different airports and it’s surrounded by several hotels, restaurants and is within walking distance of Downtown Disney. All in all I had a great time and experience. Hopefully Wondercon will continue to have a home here in southern California.

London Bridge Resort at Lake Havasu

To ease ourselves into the rush of the holiday season, we decided to spend a weekend at scenic Lake Havasu City where we stayed at the London Bridge Resort. The resort prides itself as the city’s only all-suite resort which sits on 110 waterfront acres, near the famous London Bridge. Capitalizing on the London theme, upon our entry, we were greeted with a full-size replica carriage of the wedding coach used by the royal family for generations. Check-in was very efficient and despite holiday parties scheduled that night, we were able to find ample free parking spots throughout the resort.

On our way to the room we checked out the gift shop, and noted the resort’s business center, game room, bar and restaurant. Our room was an extremely pleasant surprise as not only was there a full kitchen complete with dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, it was also supplied with all necessary kitchen utensils.

The kitchen overlooked a cozy dining area where meals can be at the dining table set for 2 or at the breakfast bar with comfortable bar stools. The spacious living room held a roomy couch, and opened up to a a patio with its own table and chairs as well. The bedroom was nicely appointed with a king-sized bed as well as a second television. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the bathroom which in addition to a very nice shower there was a jetted bathtub which had a fun, colorful light feature.

The resort offers lots of entertainment options for families and young adults. There are numerous pools at the resort, including a waterslide and a nightclub which was voted not only the largest the most popular outdoor nightclub in the city. There is also a shopping village behind the resort which offers a variety of restaurants and shops as well as easy access to the London Bridge.

Guests who walk under the bridge can take in a nice waterfront view, watercraft rentals, as well as numerous shops and restaurants. We had been told that the area is scheduled for renovation in the coming years by the helpful and friendly folks at the tourism office located just beside the bridge.

The hotel offered a great restaurant which offered room service as well as numerous dining options for those looking for something a little more formal than what the surrounding village offers. Although it is a casual setting, numerous steak and seafood options as well as appetizers were available. I selected the all-you-can-eat fish and chips which was an incredible bargain at only $9.99. The wife enjoyed teriyaki chicken skewers served with surprisingly taste green tea rice.

Guests may want to note that the bar is a very popular spot and some guests may encounter some noise in the resort depending on the activities and time of year that you are visiting. For our stay, I would say that the noise was fairly well-contained, although we occasionally did hear some of the celebrations going on nearby. The resort astutely supplies their bedside tables with earplugs in anticipation of this.

Another nice feature of the resort was seeing the surrounding area decked out in the holiday lights. There was an outdoor ice skating rink as well as a golf course adjacent to the resort and guests looking for full spa service will be happy to know it is also available on-site.

Across the street from the resort were numerous shops and restaurants as well as a movie theater, each of which was less than a 5 min. walk from the resort. For those looking to venture into town, it is a very easy city in which to drive around and offers numerous shopping and dining options ranging from local businesses to familiar chains.

The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating and the rooms were extremely comfortable to relax in, especially with the complementary HBO and full range of stations that were offered. To see just how versatile the resort was, we decided to pick up groceries from the local Safeway and had dinner in our room one evening as a change of pace from the dining out we been doing during our trip. We were easily able to complete our dinner and settle in for the night without any issues as after being so busy with all of the sightseeing and activities it was nice to just unwind with a quiet evening in.

As nice as the resort is,the amazing beauty of the surrounding area is truly something to behold. Bordering Arizona and California, the city has not only become a popular year-round tourist attraction, but it is a haven for spring break guests as well as Hollywood celebrities who flock to the gorgeous scenery and ample lakeshore while enjoying the small-town feel that offers all the comforts and amenities of a larger city.

London Bridge Resort surpassed our expectations and we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing albeit too short visit. We look forward to returning in the future and we strongly suggest that you schedule a stay whenever you are in this incredible city.

SeaWorld for the Holidays

During a recent trip to San Diego, we got to visit one of our favorite places, SeaWorld. Although we had visited earlier in the year, we were not able to experience the new Turtle Reef attraction which was still under construction at the time of our last visit.

Upon entering the park we made sure to purchase a dining option that for roughly $30 per adult offers unlimited dining at several of the parks restaurants. This is an exceptionally good value as you can have breakfast, lunch & dinner throughout the day and evening with cuisine ranging from burgers to barbecue or sandwiches to Italian food.

After a nice breakfast al fresco at Seaport Market we took the time to admire some of the Christmas attractions that were still under construction for the upcoming holiday. We got especially excited at at the preparation of the “SnowWorld at SeaWorld” – a 6,500 square feet arena at SeaWorld’s Arctic Plaza. With fresh snow each day and impromptu visits with SeaWorld’s arctic foxes, who could ask for a more wintery experience? SnowWorld is now open daily through Jan. 1.

Our next stop was Journey to Atlantis and sadly I chose to sit in the very front of the boat which resulted in me being drenched by two gigantic waves during the ride. Even though I was soaked thoroughly I had an amazing time and the gigantic dryers that are available helped dry me out quickly.

Next up we took in the Blue Horizon show which replaced the long-running dolphin and pilot whales show. While dolphins remain a part of the show, the vast majority of it is made up of aerial performers in elaborate costumes doing routines over the water. The dolphins still do some amazing work in this new show.

Up next, we checked out the new Turtle Reef and were just amazed at the variety of sea turtles in a beautiful, and very relaxing, setting. The grace and unique characters of these creatures were truly awe-inspiring and the very informative exhibition even included an interactive sea turtle videogame for guests to enjoy.

Upon exiting the exhibition, we decided to give the new Riptide Rescue ride a shot. Sadly the small ride boats were not built for my 6’4″ frame to comfortably sit with another person, so the wife and I had to take separate boats. The very helpful staff told me that during its design there was concern that the boats were not big enough for many guests and that this is something that is being looked into. It was a bit of a squeeze to get the safety bar down to the required two clicks, but once it was in place, the ride was a twisting and twirling thrill that needs to be experienced.

After stopping for a pizza and pasta lunch at Mama Stella’s Pizza Kitchen , we took in the Sea Lion Live (SLL) show, which was a hilarious show of prank-loving sea lions starring in TV-show spoofs in the style of Saturday Night Live, complete with dancing by the sea lions. The charm and comedic timing of the sea lions stole the show as they interacted with their human performers in and out of the water. Get seated early to catch a bonus act from one of the human entertainers who re-creates some of the greatest dance routines from a bevy of Hollywood classics. This time of year, the stars of SLL, Clyde & Seamore, are putting on their version of “Night Before Christmas.”

We spent the rest of the afternoon experiencing the numerous rides, exhibits, and shows that the park had to offer and noted with anticipation how well the new Manta roller coaster is coming along. Tremendous progress has been made since our earlier visit and the spectacular Bayside Sky Ride gave us amazing views of not only the progress of the construction but the scenic bay.

As night fell, our noses lead us to the Calypso Bay Smokehouse to dine on barbecue tri-tip, ribs and chicken before we made our way to the Shamu Rocks! show which blends music and lights to impressive routines with the world-famous Orcas. While the trainers did not interact in the water with the show’s stars, it was still incredible to see the grace and splendor of these majestic creatures up close. If you visit now, Shamu and friends celebrate Christmas with music and merriment, including live singers, a saxophonist and Christmas carolers spreading good cheer. Shamu Stadium transforms into a winter wonderland with Christmas trees, decorations, and beautiful Christmas scenes on the 80-foot-wide LED screens.

I was sad to see that one of my favorite attractions, Shipwreck Rapids, was down for maintenance during our visit, but we certainly had no shortage of activities and relished being able to experience such beloved classics as Wild Arctic, Pets Rule, Journey to Atlantis, and countless other offerings SeaWorld has available. For children, the Sesame Street themed rides like Elmo’s Flying Fish and Oscar’s Rocking Eel offer fun thrills. Now through New Year’s Day, the talented shelter animals that present Pets Rule offer more silly antics as they take over the house for Christmas and throw their own holiday party.

We were a little early for the holidays, but knowing what SeaWorld has to offer for Christmas, we’ll definitely include it in next year’s holiday travels. Frequent guests will want to look into the 2012 Fun Card, Silver or Platinum season passes as they quickly pay for themselves within a couple of visits and offer a full year of visits and perks.

Red Lion Anaheim California

Recently we got the chance to stay at the Red Lion Anaheim during our coverage of Disneyland’s Holiday Celebration. As we enter our first holiday season at the new southwest office, I am not only enjoying the weather but the close proximity of California and Las Vegas which allows us to greatly expand our travel and event coverage as well as enjoy some great weather while our Seattle office deals with the cold and rainy weather.

Anaheim is a very pleasant and easy drive over from Phoenix and we arrived at the hotel without any issues as the Red Lion is located very close to Disneyland as well as the Anaheim Convention Center. This is ideal as with Blizzcon, D23, and the upcoming Wondercon, there are numerous events for fans of gaming and pop culture as well as the abundance of activities and conferences that are held in the surrounding area.

The hotel offers 310 renovated rooms with tile bathrooms, ergonomic workspaces, and meeting rooms aside from a very impressive list of amenities.

Check in was very smooth and the helpful staff pointed out options such as a shuttle to and from Disneyland, a gift shop and the ability to purchase tickets there should we need them. The front desk also set us up with their free Rewards program and answered any questions we had about it.

The lobby was very trendy and inviting and showed right off the bat that this was a first class locale that offers a full service stay and helpful staff.

I asked about dining and since it was later in the evening, the staff pointed out that the pasta restaurant was closed but that there was an IHOP next to the property that was open 24 hours. There is also a Cafe2Go for those in a hurry which offers drinks, chips, sandwiches, and other snacks.

Families will want to try Red’s Pasta Kitchen for great pasta and treats the entire family will enjoy.

After parking in the lot behind the hotel which is available for $14.00 a day, we checked into our room and were very happy with the modern décor as well as the very comfortable and inviting feel to the room. Everything was spotless and lacked for nothing as it included a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, ironing board, IPod alarm clock, free Wi-Fi, 37’ plasma screen television, and Bath and Body works products.

The dual queen beds were very comfy and that is saying something as we are used to our memory foam bed and often find hotel beds hard to adjust to.

The view from the room was amazing and offered a great view of Disneyland as well as the hotel pool and offers and amazing view of the fireworks at Disneyland. Disney has classified the Red Lion Anaheim a Good Neighbor hotel which means it has earned distinction as a provider of top notch services and accommodations to those visiting the park and staying off site.

The room also had a desk and ample work space and room service was available as well. I noted that the television offered a wide range of stations and not just a handful of options as even The Cartoon Network and Sy Fy Channel were included which is often not the case at most hotels.

The following morning our wakeup call arrived as scheduled and we prepared for a busy day ahead. The hotel gift shop offered plenty of options for those on the go as well as the cafe2go. I had wanted to take advantage of the breakfast buffet at $9.95 but a hectic schedule prevented this.

Disneyland is roughly a city block and a half away and it was a very easy 15-20 minute walk for those who do not wish to wait for a shuttle. We had no trouble at all walking to and from the park even after a very busy day and evening left us exhausted.

Upon our return after a very busy day, we were greeted by a clean room that the hotel staff had diligently cleaned and enjoyed the comfortable beds.

The next morning came with another prompt wakeup call and we had a very smooth check out. The hotel offers guests access from the front and back of the hotel so I was able to load up our car easily from the back elevators and then easily go to the lobby to complete our checkout.

The staff very helpfully directed us to a nearby gas station and confirmed that we had the correct directions to get us back to the highway.
It is little touches like this as well as the front line features and staff that made this a great place to stay.

The hotel is pet friendly so those guests looking to travel with animals will want to check out this option as well.

In a day when so many hotels either cut back on services or charge a premium, the Red Lion Anaheim offers great value and amenities at an affordable rate and features a fantastic staff and locale. For those visiting Disneyland or the city of Anaheim in the future, make sure to check out this hotel as you will be happy that you did.

Sofia Hotel San Diego

During our recent trip to San Diego, we got to experience one of downtown’s more unique hotels. From the moment we pulled up to the Sofia Hotel, where we were greeted curbside by a friendly valet, the charming mix of old and new was abundant.

Born of a $16 million renovation of San Diego’s historic Pickwick Hotel, the Sofia Hotel has an exceptionally decorated lobby with classic, old world charm and a smartly-dressed staff who were pleasant, helpful and efficient. Check-in was very smooth and in no time we were settling into our room. The spacious room offered a living room complete with couch, chairs, desk, table, drawers, and a television.

Efficiently designed and comfortably appointed with a chic tone, the luxuries were in the detail. Our suite had an updated, modern bathrooms with a unique layout in that the sink and counter were in the throughway to the bedroom, opposite a shower and toilet chamber enclosed by a space-saving sliding door. Fine linen, with plush pillows made for a comfortable night’s rest. Gilchrist & Soames spa products and toiletries made even quick showers a delightful experience.

The suite also included a microwave and a miniature fridge that came in handy during our four-day stay. The bedroom also had a television as well as a safe for storage of valuables. While the TVs were a bit smaller then in some other hotels they offered a wide range of channels including both free and on-demand movie channels and local information channels.

Dining options were abundant as not only did the hotel offer its own bar and restaurant, the Currant Brasserie, but there were numerous restaurants as well as shopping options within an easy walk of the hotel. The Currant has been rated the best French Bistro in town and each evening offers and amazing specialty popcorn. I had expected it to be simply new seasonings and was happy to experience, meat, cheese, and other delights when it arrived. The hotel also offers spa services and the 24-hour Harkishan Yoga Studio and Health Center provides yoga mats and surround sound system and an on-call yoga instructor is available. The pet-friendly hotel also partners with Dogs and the City to offer pet care services such as grooming or in-room pet sitting.

I strongly suggest taking advantage of the local area station on the in room cable service as I learned about some great venues in the area as well as a famous pancake resturant which has garnered national praise.

While parking downtown can be a bit of an issue the Sofia offers valet parking at $30 a day. The valet service was extremely efficient and helpful and a couple of times provided directions that were even better than our GPS could provide. There are also numerous lots in the surrounding blocks which offer numerous options for guests.

The hotel charges a resort fee of $12.00 per day which includes complementary Internet access as well as other amenities such as bottled water. Since this was a working trip, I was extremely grateful to have reliable access to the Internet and a comfy room in which to unwind after an extremely long day in a city that offers countless activities.

Sadly our time went by very quickly but we were given and very friendly and prompt check out, and the reception desk even offered us coupons to a local dining facility. From a great room and very friendly staff, we cannot wait for a return visit to this charming hotel.

Disneyland for the Holidays

The holiday season kicked into full gear with the magnificent display of music, lights, and fireworks at Disneyland with their amazing holiday celebration. Upon entering the park, my wife and I were dazzled by the festive holiday decor that adorned every aspect of the Park. Main Street USA whisked away to a magical holiday setting complete with a 60 foot Christmas tree and beautiful decorations adorning the buildings, with Mickey-shaped wreaths leading the way. The famous Cinderalla’s Castle looked absolutely amazing adorned in winter lighting and was a captivating sight to behold. This certainly stirred the holiday spirit in both of us and enhanced the magic with every step we took.

After taking numerous pictures and roaming the shops of Main Street, we stopped for a quick bite to eat before taking in the attractions. Our first stop was the Haunted Mansion to experience the holiday-themed “A Nightmare Before Christmas.” As you can expect, the line was very long, so we opted to use the FASTPASS option so we could take in other attractions while waiting for our return time for the attraction to arrive.

Since this was Thanksgiving weekend, the park was packed with guests taking full advantage of the long weekend to enjoy the magnificent splendor of Disneyland decked out for its holiday celebrations. I opted to spend my time going on Splash Mountain while my wife took pictures of the characters at Pooh’s corner. Since I was riding alone, I took advantage of the single rider option for Splash Mountain and boarded immediately rather than face a 55 minute wait. My wife had been concerned that she would get drenched on the ride, as has been our experience in recent visits, but thankfully sitting at the back of the log I managed to stay relatively dry.

After a few more pictures, we used our FASTPASS and quickly entered the Haunted Mansion. As before I was amazed at the utter immersion the attraction offers including the musty scent that greets guests as they enter. The attraction had undergone a total conversion that featured Jack Skellington and other characters from “A Nightmare Before Christmas” seamlessly integrated into the beloved attraction. Everything from the pictures, holograms, and decor was enhanced to feature a haunted Christmas celebration. A couple of delights for us was smelling the gingerbread house as we rode past it, and seeing the traditional holographic hitchhikers replaced with twisted holiday gifts. Words cannot fully do justice to the amount of new features that were added but suffice it to say it is even more elaborate than we first experienced over six years ago and is truly a must-see attraction.

The sun had set and Disneyland was even more alive with lights when we returned to Main Street to catch the holiday parade. A huge crowd lined the streets and were not disappointed by a dazzling parade of floats, music, and beloved characters all celebrating the holidays. From Mickey and Minnie ice-skating on top of a float, to the toy soldiers, and Jolly old St. Nick himself, you would have to be a Grinch not to be delighted by the magic of the event. Seeing the big tree as well as Main Street lit up was also a breathtaking sight.

Next we went over to Disney’s California Adventure and had to take a few detours around the numerous construction projects that were going on at the Park. Everything from a new entrance to Car’s Land is set to open in 2012 and from what we could see, it is truly going to be a magnificent addition to the Park.

I took advantage of Grizzly Rapids very short line, and thanks to my windbreaker, managed to avoid getting too wet on the ride. The guest who shared my raft were not so lucky but gleefully went back in line as they told me they were on their ninth straight time. Indulging my wife’s preference for gentler rides, with the ulterior motive of drying off, we made our way to the pier and took a ride on the Golden Zephyr and Silly Swing Symphony, both rides guaranteed to bring out the kid in you who always wanted to fly.

Since we wanted to get back to experience the holiday fireworks show, and the lines were long, we did not get to as many attractions as we had hoped to, but after taking a break for a filling dinner at Taste Pilot’s Grill, we made our way back to Disneyland for the amazing holiday fireworks show that was truly epic even by Disney standards. Following the fireworks, we made our way It’s a Small World, and were dazzled by amazing light and music show over the beloved attraction. Next up we headed over to Fantasmic and passed by the reindeer that were being attended to by staff. Even though we were unable to visit them during the normal hours of the attraction, it was still a joy to see them from afar.

The rest of the evening was spent visiting many of our favorite attractions, shopping, and taking in the numerous holiday decorations, lights, and attractions. At the end of our visit, we agreed that not only was this an amazing holiday event, but a new tradition that we look for to experiencing each year. The holiday celebration runs from Thanksgiving to the first weekend of the new year and is an amazing spectacle that every member of the family will enjoy.

Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour By Cirque Du Soleil

The King of Pop Michael Jackson is remembered worldwide as a unique man who changed the world of pop music forever. He was a man with a heart of a child who only wanted the world to be a better place. Through his lyrics he expressed the trials and tribulations of the world today and through his inspirational messages of how we can with love and unity, change the future of tomorrow’s youth and the future of the world around us.

Leading concert director and multiple Emmy award nominee Jamie King, along with Cirque Du Soleil and the estate of Michael Jackson have created Michael Jackson the Immortal World Tour. This production takes audiences back to the beginning with Michael Jackson’s origins with the unforgettable music of the Jackson 5, his iconic dance moves, and music which gained him legions of fans worldwide.

Cirque Du Soleil combines the choreography and music that we are all familiar with, along with elements of a circus, fantasy, bright lights, vibrant colors, unforgettable sets and talented performers. The show includes elements of surprise and fantasy with bits of humor and sadness portrayed by a mime who in spirit gains all the talents of MJ. An amazing contortionist right out of the pages of a book of Tales from “Is it Scary”, a “Dangerous” acrobatic pole dance, a sensual aerialistic tango at “This Place Hotel”, and much more. There are so many other exciting elements and acts that pay homage to the great songs such as “Wanna be starting Something”, “Smooth Criminal”, “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, “Black and White” and my personal favorite “Thriller”.

I have loved Michael Jackson’s music and moves ever since I can remember I even remember a failed attempt by my father who tried to teach me to moonwalk. Those were the days, and though the king of pop is gone he has been immortalized within his lyrics and thanks to this production fans can come together and remember. The audience gets a chance to experience the unique and eccentric nature that is the Cirque. This was my very first Cirque Du Soleil performance and it exceeded my expectations 100%. The costumes, the instruments, the many international performers and surprises the show has to offer makes it an absolute must see.

The show brought myself and the audience laughter, joy and sometimes a tear here and there. The energy from the performers and the audience was magical and really made it feel like MJ himself was watching and enjoying with us. I am so excited and thankfull to have had the opportunity to experience the most amazing show that I have ever seen and am excited to see what else Cirque Du Soleil has to offer in the future.

Nostalgic & New: Arizona State Fair

As the high Arizona summer temps started their descent, and cooler weather began to emerge, the setting became ideal for the annual Arizona State Fair. I had not attended the fair since I was a small child, and had since spent the subsequent decades experiencing the Puyallup and other northwest fairs. The Arizona State Fair has certainly grown since I was a child and musical entertainment offered quite a variety of name acts ranging from Snoop Dogg to Billy Idol. Of course there were countless other local entertainers available throughout the run of the fair.

The midway offered plenty of popular rides including some very interesting water rides and roller coasters. Guests looking not to bust the bank may want to take advantage of the ride passes available during the week which allow guests to take in unlimited rides for a set fee which is much cheaper than paying for each ride individually, as after 4-5 rides the pass pays for itself.

Numerous food vendors adorn the midway offering a nostalgic bouquet of aromas to tantalize the senses. Everything from the traditional hot dogs and burgers to turkey legs, Mexican food, and the amazing Navajo tacos were available. But there was also an offering of many public service booths as well as interesting sideshow attraction that harken back to the best midway freak shows.

There was no shortage of vendors throughout the fair, although it did take a bit of adjustment for me as I had become so accustomed to the vendors in the Northwest. It seemed odd not to be inundated with saunas, hot tubs, and fireplaces available at special fair pricing. While at first some of the vendors seemed to be offering items typically found at a swap meet, sticking it out we were able to find a very nice mix of items available.

Of course it wouldn’t be a fair without livestock and we certainly enjoyed the great array of animals that were available for viewing in the livestock barns as well as the numerous agricultural exhibits. My wife, a new transplant to Arizona, was particularly delighted by the There was also an exhibit available for an additional cost of which allows guests to get an up close look at the marvels of the human body.
When the sun went down, the fair kicked into high gear as the lights on the midway certainly added a more festive dimension to the fair.

The Arizona State Fair was a great trip down memory lane, a chance to experience the old and new and a fun event that truly offers something for the entire family.

Disneyland Celebrates October with Mickey’s Halloween Party

With fall upon us, Mickey and his friends have gotten into the Halloween spirit on select nights at the Disneyland Resort. Mickey’s Halloween Party is an event that turns the happiest place on earth into the ultimate Halloween event that the entire family can enjoy.

Attendees are required to purchase a special ticket to the event as the park closes to regular ticket holders at 7:00 PM. Those who purchase tickets to the event can enter the park at 4:00 PM and stay until the park closes at Midnight. Upon entering the park, guests are given a trick or treat bag and a wristband and a map and schedule of activities. Many of the guests were attired in costumes and I was really impressed with the complexity and creativeness of many of the costumes that I saw as many were homemade.

I started my visit at Space Mountain as I wanted to experience the Halloween-themed Galaxy of Terror. The sign said the wait would be 70 minutes so I decided to do it now in case it was longer later in the evening. The wait turned out to be just over two hours but when I finally made it to the ride, I really enjoyed the experience. The multi-colored launch tube was now pitch black, and the familiar constellations were marred by a menacing spectral image who appeared at random times and taunted us as we made our way up the tracks. During the wild and crazy twists and turns the image would pop up at various times as did hands that reached out to grab us, and a spooky eye that watched us as we raced around a corner. The screams that filled the air confirmed that the experience was highly effective.

Next I made my way to Critter Country and while I was disappointed to see that Pirates of the Carribean was closed for upkeep, Splash Mountain had a short line. In no time, I was enjoying the mix of music, water, drops and characters. Upon completion of the ride, I was asked if I wanted to ride again, and when I replied yes, I was told to stay seated and enjoy “Splashback”. When the ride resumed I noticed a few pumpkins were now decorating various sections of the ride.

I did manage to avoid becoming completely soaked, and upon exiting the ride, the Halloween events were just getting started. I noticed several lines where guests would line up to get treats from various stations and once my writstband was verified I was able to join them. At various points in the resort, I would go into locales such as the Saloon, Picnic area, Pirates of the Caribbean entrance and had my bag filled over the evening.

The line for the Haunted Mansion was vast as the décor now featured Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and the house was decked out in lights and gifts and was a truly spectacular sight. The ride itself was a nice blend of old and new with many of the traditional moments of the ride still there, just with some nice twists and appearances from Jack himself.

The river was covered in fog and lighting and really set the atmosphere well. I noticed a dance party with characters was underway near my next stop Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The wait said 10 minutes but I walked right up and took my place in lucky line number 13. In no time, we were in the dark start of the ride where I noticed bats glowing red eyes as well as cobwebs and spiders to set the Halloween mood. The ride was as amazing as ever and the turns through the dark caves were a real delight.

The party was just getting started as I noticed Mickey and Minnie in costumes posing for pictures with the guests, and as I made my way through Fantasyland into Tomorrowland, I continued to load up my treat bag and take in the amazing sights.

I was very happy to see that the Matterhorn was up and running again as it had been closed for renovations during my last visit. I did not notice a lot of changes in the ride so my guess is that the upgrades were tech related but it was still an amazing experience.

The Tomorrowland Terrace was rocking with music and dancing and I took the time to check out a few more attractions. I saw everything from Storm Troopers to classic Disney characters entertaining the guests and then took in the really impressive Halloween parade that had a great mix of characters, floats, music and dancing.

Not content to rest there, Disneyland then kicked the party into high gear with a dazzling fireworks display that was truly a sight to behold. With a couple hours left in the evening, I was happy to see that many of the attraction lines were less than 15 minutes long so I took the chance to experience as much as I could.

When the evening concluded I was blown away by not only the great time that I had but how detailed the decorations and events were. There were so many events that I could not take them all in, but what I did experience was more than amazing and makes me look forward to attending what I hope is a new annual tradition for us next year.

Disneyland has always been a very magical place for me and I have always noted how they do seasonal celebrations better than anyone. The amazing attention to detail, the lighting, the fantasy, and décor truly create a sense of the holiday. I loved taking in the Halloween décor, especially the character inspired pumpkin décor, the new lighting effects. All of the amazing sights and sounds make this a must see. If you think you have seen all that Disneyland has to offer I highly encourage you to bring your family and friends to experience the most fun Halloween party you will ever attend. I suggest you get your tickets in advance as they do sell out quickly. Get dates and ticket information at www.disneyland.com.

Phoenix-Area Haunted House Round Up

One of the nice things about opening our new office in Arizona is getting to experience many new regional events. With the first fall season for Skewed and Reviewed’s Southwest office upon us, we decided to have a look at some of the local haunted houses.

We started with Chambers of Fearin the city of Surprise. Chambers of Fear has won many Top Haunts awards and was voted the best in Arizona for 2010 by the Arizona Republic. Housed in a vacant retail space, at first it was deceptively tame as we made our way through the black plywood mazes, causing me to wonder what made this attraction stand out from the others. But as we came to the middle of the maze, it was clear why, as elaborate lighting and monsters appeared out of nowhere getting in your face and bumping you along the paths.

I liked one section where we turned into a darkened corridor and a blast of gunfire and light erupt from overhead before we were plunged into total darkness. As we went along, the intensity grew as we were sprayed with water and harassed by a series of deranged characters and immersed in elaborate sets. The event concluded with a finale that unhinged one guest so much that she ran across the parking lot in a full sprint to get away.

Our next stop for the evening was Jack and Jill’s Haunted Hill in Phoenix. Located in a residential area, the attraction opens with a news report about two missing individuals named Jack and Jill who were last seen in the area. The setting resembles a dark mine shaft. As we navigated the dark and narrow halls, we were menaced by some creepy individuals who occupied the locale. At one stop, we encountered Jack who was confined to an elaborate machine which was pulling him apart. The mix of live action and effects was very impressive as were the rooms that followed. As we made our way along we discovered more about what happened to the missing people and this culminated in a cold meatlocker-like room full of hanging body bags some of which felt like there were living individuals within them. I was really impressed with their use of the dark, unpredictable and narrow setting of a mine as well as the great effects and creepy cold room.

The final stop for us was The Nest at Rawhide. The attraction has been featured on MSN, Good Morning America, and has been rated one of the best haunts in the country. The Nest is on the grounds of Rawhide, a popular Wild West town, that transforms into Doomtown for Halloween. The streets of Doomtown have everything from a Headless Horsemen to other spooks and attractions ranging from stunt shows, zombie paintball, psychic readings, petting zoo, stagecoach and train rides, as well as all manner of shops and places to eat.

Upon entering The Nest we made our way through what at first seemed to be a normal haunted house. I was impressed with the sets and the makeup of the characters and was surprised when I was handed a pair of 3D glasses soon after entering. The 3D section was great as the paint on the walls and actors truly came out at us, and squares on the floor appeared to hover before us.

An early highlight was a spinning tunnel which truly came alive in 3D. When we emerged and returned our glasses, we were ushered into a new section which as a very narrow and pitch black maze. The setting was so dark you could not see your hand in front of your face and only screams, a heartbeat, gunfire, and random noise erupting at random times guided you in the right direction. It was a very long maze and took a while to navigate which we had to do by touching walls and feeling our way along. At random times a creature would emerge out of a hidden area and we had to squeeze through one section in a very unnerving fashion. When we finally made our way through the maze, we entered the third house which consisted of redneck cannibals. The sets, costumes, and makeup looked like they were straight out of Hollywood and the random events truly had people on edge. From homes to a trailer park as well as a very impressive butcher shop this was the most elaborate and detailed house I have ever experienced. The actors would come right up to your face and do their worst in order to truly get you into the setting.

When we emerged my wife and I agreed that that was one of the best haunted houses we had ever experienced, comparable to ones set up at higher-priced venues like Knotts in Anaheim, California. It truly had the best mix of everything with actors and sets that really allowed you to become immersed in the scary settings.

Puyallup Haunted Mansion

Every year for one weekend only in October The Puyallup Parks and Recreation puts on a great haunted attraction which in the past has been made into a haunted hayride and was always a huge hit. This year to top it off they came up with the perfect idea and a great scare. This years event was held at the Memorial Center and was limited to 700 tickets each night.

The haunted mansion starts out just like a storybook with a beginning a middle and an end not like some of the other haunts out there that are just all jumbled and make no sense. The basis of the story is that the house guests are about to embark on an open house tour and you the guest are the potential buyers. Each room pays homage to classic scenes and characters from the past. They certainly did a faboulouse job of scaring me with my three worst fears The Exsorcist, Chucky and clowns. The only thing I would change if I could would be that it would be a longer running event to last throughout the Halloween season and not just limited to four days out of the season.

We thank the Puyallup Parks and Recreation for allowing us to experience this years haunt and recomend it in the future for those of you who like to be scared.

NW Fans: There’s Still Time to Do the Puyallup

The Puyallup Fair once known as the Valley Fair originally opened its doors in October of 1900 and netted a profit of $583 from a total of 3,000 visitors. This year the Puyallup Fair expects over 384,000 guests offering new and exciting entertainment along with old favorites to provide you a memorable experience.

The Big Aerial show can be enjoyed in the Thrill Zone and is one of the new shows this year. It offers guests exciting and daring entertainment that involves aerial artists, extraordinary jugglers and acrobats who use an 85-foot sway pole in their act. The MBS Mountainboard Big Air Show located near the Green Gate brings the excitement of mountainboarding to the fair. This amazing stunt show combines speed, flips, rail sliding and much, much more.

There is a lot of other entertainment to be found at the Coca Cola stage (Tina Marie-Hypnotist, Fables of the West, Stoddard & Cole- Musical Comedy, Peter Gossamer-Illusionist and my personal favorite Vocal Trash) and at the Fountain Plaza (Billy Hill and The Hillbillies, Hanna Michelle Weeks, Varlee for Ransom, Fortune Dwellers, Mad Silence, Dennis Lee and Band, The Konzelman Family, Seniors and Perscription Drugs, Gospel Explosion and Catch A Rising Star Talent Show). There are a number of strolling entertainers as well, such as: The Flying Carpet Magician, Linda Hulet the clown, Mango and Dango who are stilt characters, The Procrastinators who are an urban percussion band and we can’t forget about those famous Storm Troopers, although these guys only come out on the weekends.

A couple of other new additions to the fair this year is a thrill ride called Vertigo. The tower is 100 feet tall which is about 10 stories high that spins a total of twenty four riders at 30 MPH almost like a crazy adult version of the regular swings at the fair. Just watching people on this ride make you dizzy. Because this year marks the 200 year anniversary of the fair you can step back in time and view the history of the fair from past to present in the Made in America: The Story of the Modern Fair display at the Americraft Showplex.

The one and only thing I can’t leave the fair without is one of the famous Fisher scones. This year marks the 100 anniversary of these scones. The lucky customer who orders the 100 millionth scone will be the owner of $1,000 and a years worth of scone mix so that you will never be without those yummy scones. With over 160 food locations and two new food stands there is always something to satisfy everybody’s palate.

There are plenty of activities for kids and kids at heart. There is the all time favorite face painting, Let’s Pretend Farm Time, Mutton Bustin’, Kids Tractor Pull, World of Music, Giant Pumpkin Carving and the Pioneer Farm Planting Patch. The requisite animal exhibits always make for a fun walk-through, and this year there are even camel rides.

The 2011 Puyallup Fair runs until September 25th, 10am-10pm Sunday-Thursday and 10am-11pm Friday-Saturday. Admission is $11 for Adults, $9 for Youth (6-18yrs), $9 Seniors (62+), Five and under are Always free! While Pierce Transit no longer offers bus service to the fair, there is a “Fair Express” that leaves from the South Hill Mall, Tacoma Mall, Lakewood Towne Center and on River Road. Cash only, $3 one way and $4 round trip. Please visit www.thefair.com for more information.

D23

On August 19 – 21, 2011, all eyes were on the Anaheim Convention Center as the Walt Disney Corporation held its D23 Expo to a capacity crowd. In addition to an impressive display of vendors, Disney brought a star-studded array of celebrities to promote their upcoming films , TV projects, theme park additions, and consumer products.

On the theme park side, panels were held to discuss the recent renovation of Star Tours, as well as the pending Cars Land which will open in 2012. There were also forums geared to the Disney channel, and the numerous tween talents that caused the younger members in attendance to erupt into giddy squeals of delight at various times throughout the weekend.

Despite the large audience that I was told would push 60,000 people, the flow of the exhibition floor was quite good and I did not have to push my way through people as I have had to do at other expos. My wife and I took time to take part in a conservation project by planting seedlings that would then be distributed to various area schools as part of their studies and green projects. We also really enjoyed seeing the 3-D Blu-ray’s that are coming as well as a look at some of the props from the recent Pirates of the Caribbean films.

One of the most fun highlights for our coverage was getting to see the pending Disneyland game for the Kinect. The game allows users to take a virtual tour of Disneyland that is exact down to the most minute details such as the infamous Golden Spike under sleeping beauties Castle. Six of the planned 11 rides were on display and I was able to sample a few of them. You can either walk to a locale or use a fast pass to immediately go to the ride of your choice. Once set on a ride you and a friend can embark on a series of mini games related to the ride. For example, on Big Thunder Mountain, my wife and I had to simulate pumping a handcar as we raced through a series of tracks and moved to flip tracks to avoid various dangers. While it was much longer than the ride itself, not only did we get a great workout but I enjoyed the familiar run through the dinosaur bones and water splash at the rides’ end.

Also built into the game are character interactions. We chose Mickey Mouse, of course, and was able to hug, high-five five, get an autograph, and pose for a picture with him. During the game we collected a series of coins which we were informed would be used to purchase various items at the Disney store later in the game. Our next stop was the Matterhorn, and after both bobsledding and engaging in a snowball fight with the abominable snowman, we joined Goofy for a fast paced ski race down the mountain as we attempted to avoid all manner of obstacles and dangers and stay ahead of the pending avalanche.

The game was amazingly fun and we can’t wait to see what other rides and features are available as it truly was as close to spending a day at the park as you can get without actually being there. The rides were a lot of fun, great exercise, and we did not have to wait in lines and weave through crowds to enjoy them.

The big event of the expo was of course the first thing panel of Saturday morning when we got a look at what was coming in the next few years from the various film divisions. After introductions by the various studio heads which was preceded by a very impressive video montage, we were introduced to John Cryer who will be voicing the lead character in a new animated film called Planes. Cryer plays a crop duster who dreams of making it big who will be given the chance of a lifetime.

Sarah Silverman and Jack Brayer then came on stage to support a film called Wreck-It Ralph. The title character is voiced by John C. Reilly and tells the story of a videogame villain from the eight bit era of gaming. Thirty years later Ralph secretly desires to become a videogame hero and will eventually find himself on an epic adventure. The film also stars Jane Lynch and looks to be a breakout hit for the company.

Pixar celebrated their 25th birthday by giving everyone in attendance a commemorative cupcake and then nearly brought the house down with an awe-inspiring array of projects. First they introduce the Scottish adventure Brave which includes such memorable talents as Robbie Coltrain, Billy Connolly, Craig Ferguson, and other Scottish actors in this Highland tale of death of a defiant young girl. The clips we saw were absolutely stunning as the creators made several trips to Scotland to do their research and, although being of Scottish lineage, it was not offensive at all to see the humor in the project ranging from sheep, clan fighting, and of course the bagpipes as well as the incomprehensible accents.

Monsters University, which is a prequel to the beloved Monsters, Inc. was presented with a video greeting from stars John Goodman and Billy Crystal Crystal then surprised everyone by stepping out of the screen and bursting on stage to deliver his address in person. The film tells the early days of Sully and Mike as they started as rivals and later became the best of friends. Steve Buscemi Is also back as the villainous Randal.

Pixar was not done as they announced two as-yet-untitled projects: one dealing with dinosaurs, the other dealing with what goes on in the human mind. Both films are not due until 2014 which shows that the creative geniuses at Pixar are not content to rest on their laurels and are continuing to push the boundaries of digital entertainment.

There were also presentations done for the pending stop motion Frankenweenie by Tim Burton and Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great and Powerful which stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and many others in this prequel to the Wizard of Oz.

The star power did not stop as Jennifer Garner took the stage to thunderous applause to promote her pending project, The Odd life of Timothy Green. Which deals about an infertile couple whose lives are changed when a mysterious boy appears in their garden after a bizarre storm.

Willem Dafoe, Taylor, Kitsch, and Lynn Collins also appeared to promote John Carter of Mars. The film was based on a series of books by the creator of Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and has long been in development for the screen. The tale of a despondent Civil War vet who gets pulled into a conflict on Mars certainly is poised to be in FX extravaganza though many fellow media members I spoke to afterwords were concerned that it might come across as somewhat ho-hum and cheesy. I prefer to wait to see the finished product but I can understand some reservations.

Jason Segel, Kermit the frog, and Miss Piggy followed with a look at the upcoming Muppet movie. The clips from the film caused the audience to burst into laughter several times especially during the montage to “We Built This City” as the gang lovingly restored the dilapidated Muppet Theater to its former glory. The film is set to release this November and looks to be a massive smash for the studio.

The event wrapped up with the moment that we all waited for when we were treated to a look at The Avengers. This highly ambitious project contains numerous heroes and villains from the world of Marvel comics and is loaded with stars. Josh Whedon wrote and directed the project which we were told was approximately 2 weeks away from the completion of filming.

The scene shown to us had Sam Jackson as Nick Fury interrogating Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, who was contained in a transparent cell. Fury explains to Loki that if he so much as scratches the cell, Loki has something very special awaiting him and Fury proceeds to open a panel beneath Loki showing a 30,000+ foot drop from what I assume is SHIELD Headquarters in the clouds. Loki starts to brag of his abilities but is quickly rebuffed when Fury informs him that the cage was made for something much bigger and larger than he was. Various clips followed showing Thor, Captain America, and other team members as well as a great scene between Loki and Tony Stark where Stark in his deadpan way responds to Loki’s threats with” Yeah, but we have a HULK”. This echoes an earlier comment from Fury who indicates that when the safety of his people and his planet are threatened he has a team ready to respond to the challenge and Loki likely will not enjoy seeing them in action.

Amid huge ovations, Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Chris Hemsworth, and Robert Downey Jr. took the stage as the audience nearly blew the top of the stadium off with a sustained and thunderous applause. The group did not speak much other than to thank all of us for being there and Downey, Jr. then asked them to replay the footage that we just saw that garnered an even more enthusiastic response.

The panel alone would’ve been enough to make the convention a success, but this was just one of several panels throughout the weekend. While I would say it was the largest and most comprehensive of the panels for those wanting information on upcoming films, there were numerous other events throughout the weekend. The evening showing in the arena of the beloved Lion King movie now in 3-D also garnered a capacity crowd.

Some fans we spoke to did complain about the lines and some of the helpers on hand not really having an understanding of where things were. Most of these were ironed out as the weekend went along and even those who were disappointed by not being able to attend panels understood that with so many people in attendance you can’t fit everybody in, and that there was still a very impressive and fun array of things to see and do. I’ve always said that Disney sets a very high standard for entertainment and time and time again they deliver first-class experiences and the D 23 Expo not only met but surpassed all of my expectations of the convention.

Disney Mouse Meet 2011

In Walt Disney’s opening speech at Disneyland in 1955 he states “Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America…with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” After only six years Walt Disney went from a man with a dream and only $40 in his pocket to a man with a name that people knew worldwide. Walt has inspired people to follow their dreams no matter how big those dreams may be.

Disneyland may only be hours away by plane, but some people may not be able to attend or have not been able to experience the magic of the park yet. Whatever the case may be Don Morin and his team have made it possible to bring the magic of Disney and the parks to the Pacific Northwest by creating the Pacific Northwest Mouse Meet which is held every year at the Lynwood Convention Center in Lynwood, WA. The Mouse Meet brings together Disney fans from all walks of life with; celebrity speakers, fan displays, pins to trade, official Disney treats from Disneyland to munch on and lots of people to meet. This year’s event hosted Disney legends Floyd Norman and Jack Lindquist, Disney historian and former imagineer Jeff Kurti among many others.

As of 2007 Floyd Norman has become a Disney Legend. The 76 year old man who has since retired but still shows up to work, calls himself a “Disney Geezer”. Floyd had the pleasure of working with Walt on his last movie The Jungle Book. Often times he would draw funny cartoons about Walt. One of them being about how he would always cough really loud to making his presence known only to make sure everybody was staying on task. Floyd worked on Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, Hunchback of Notre Dam, Mulan and many other animated films. He also spent some time working at the Pixar studios on Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. We were told that currently a Monsters Inc. prequel/sequel is in the works and follows Mike and Sully through their college years.

Former imagineer and Disney historian Jeff Kurtti spoke about his involvement with helping to create a museum to help fans learn more about Walt Disney and his life. The Walt Disney Family Museum is located in The Presidio of San Francisco, CA. The museum opened its doors on October 1st 2009 and showcases Walt’s life from the beginning to the end and everything in between. For more information please visit: http://disney.go.com/disneyatoz/familymuseum/

Former president of Disneyland (1990-1993), first ever advertising manager and Disney Legend Jack Lindquist was interviewed by WDW Radio host Lou Mongello mainly about some of the “crazy” ideas that he had to draw more tourist activity to Disneyland. The most effective idea brought to life was known as The Gift Giver Extraordinaire which was in conjunction with GM Motors. Four guests won cars. The 3,000,000 guest won a Cadillac Sedan De Ville. Wouldn’t that be nice to walk through the main gate at Disneyland and walk out with a new car? Mr. Lindquist also had the pleasure of working with Walt and describes Walt as being a self confident, risk taker with lots of guts.

There are lots of things to do for the whole family. If you are as big of a Disney fan as I am than this is an event that should not be missed. I have attended this event every year since it’s inaugural meet in 2009 and I have never been disappointed.

Tower 23

Strolling along the busy and bustling Pacific Beach Park boardwalk, you can gaze out upon the magnificent Pacific Ocean while dodging surfers, skateboarders, rollerbladers and tourists on bikes. It’s a San Diego experience every traveler should enjoy. But when you’re ready to leave the crowds behind and enjoy an unencumbered view of the ocean, Tower 23 offers a spectacular sight lifting you above the suntanned masses. No, not the lifeguard tower of the same number. Tower 23 is a bright gem of luxury in an already vibrant setting. While establishments along the coast know there’s no competing with the majestic ocean to attract its guests, Tower 23 incorporates the best of its surroundings in its architecture, views and decor, leaving guests feeling like they never left the beach when they step into the hotel.

Bright and airy, highlighted with the hues of ocean blue, Tower 23 is sleek and posh at the same time. Accomodated in the Surf Pad, the king-sized Tempur-Pedic Serenity bed, made up with 100% Egyptian cotton linens, was heavenly to sink into. When it got too dark to gaze at the ocean from the balcony, there was a flat screen high-def LCD TV to entertain us. What work we allowed ourselves to do during our stay was aided by the free wi-fi (which is accessible even at the beach). To make your stay even more relaxing, Tower 23 also provides, upon request, in-room massage and spa services.

Walking distance from a variety of cafes, restaurants and bars featuring anything from sushi, curry to burgers, Tower 23 itself houses one of the most popular lounge and restaurants on the beach. No kitschy nautical themes here, JRDN offers relaxed oceanfront dining for a great view of San Diego’s beautiful sunset. A contemporary steak & seafood restaurant, JRDN offers an oyster bar as well as a private wine room. If you don’t feel like traipsing the few steps to their main dining room, Sunset Patio or the Tower Deck for some casual Californian cuisine, 24 hour room service is available.

Smack dab in the center of all things San Diego, Tower 23 puts you smack dab in the center of all things San Diego, whether you want to surf, golf, fish off the pier or just cruise the beach. Baseball caps and visors are availabe in-room for purchase in case you forgot yours (or you just want a memento). When you’re done with all that fun, Tower 23 is there to provide a welcome respite. The roomy step-in rain shower is stocked with H2O products and luxurious bathrobes invite guests to lounge and relax.

From friendly and helpful valet and front desk staff, to the fully stocked mini-bar that includes personal essentials, drinks as well as snacks, Tower 23 makes sure their guests want for nothing. While there are many inns and hotels to pick from in the area, if you’re looking for the complete, luxurious and relaxing San Diego beach hotel experience, Tower 23 is head and shoulders above the rest.
