My Farewell to Lucasarts and Thanks For The Memories

Disney’s decision to close LucasArts is a very sad thing not only for the talented employees and gaming industry but for the fond memories I had of the company and their games. When it was announced that Disney was going to acquire the Lucasfilm and other Star Wars assets, my first thought was that 1313 was likely in trouble as I could not see Disney releasing a mature rated Star Wars game especially with planned films on the horizon. Disney has always made more family-friendly games that are based on their intellectual properties most notably “Brave” and “Epic Mickey 2″ as well as casual games for mobile devices.

I did not see the company as being one who would take on the tremendous production cost of doing an A level Star Wars title without bringing in other companies. While it is too early to say, Disney has said that their preferences to sign licensing deals with other companies so that they can develop Star Wars games and now former LucasArts employees have said that 1313 could still see the light of day provided a deal can be struck with another company.

While the business side of things sadly plays out, fans can be content that there will be future Star Wars games to look forward to especially as we get closer to the premier of the first sequel movie in 2015. Rather than focus on the doom and gloom side of things today has there’s certainly plenty of that to go around, I wanted to instead look back upon the fond memories I have with LucasArts.

I remember when I was in college doing my first radio show how the LucasArts general store made games such as X wing versus Tie Fighter, Outlaws, and Full Throttle available to me at a student friendly rate of $10 title. I also remember a life-size Indiana Jones cut out that was sent to us for a Star Trek convention we were at prior to my days of speaking at conventions and launching the site and magazine. At that time I was working in the gaming industry and doing articles for several publications prior to the creation and launch of our site in 2001. Regardless of how my reps change over the years, I always remember getting great treatment from the company even when we were working to establish ourselves. Titles such as The Dig, Knights of the Old Republic, and the Dark Forces series provided not only plenty of entertainment and provided more Star Wars for a ravenous fan who could not get enough, especially during the three year wait between prequel films.

I have seen how changes in the company can come on unexpectedly and have dramatic results. I was at Monolith and Sierra during times of change and closure and I also know how a sense of family can develop at a good company amongst the staff. It was one of the main reasons that I moved out of the industry into journalism full-time as I did not like the transitory nature of working in the gaming industry. Sierra was very supportive of my writing and provided me with fantastic job that I loved as well is the ability to develop my website and journalism interests. For me it was the best of both worlds and had the closure not happened, I would’ve stayed on as long as I possibly could.

It is never easy saying goodbye to good people and it is also difficult to close a formative chapter of your life. At last year’s E3 I was thrilled with what I saw of 1313 and looked forward to what I saw as a potential triumphant return of LucasArts to the action gaming genre. Bolan sadly looks as if that will not happen let’s remember fondly the good people and company that brought us countless hours of entertainment and memories and hope that their brighter days ahead not only for the workers but for the Star Wars gaming franchise.

BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES HEARTHSTONE™: HEROES OF WARCRAFT™

This sounds very good especially to fans of MAGIC. The full release is below.

New free-to-play strategy card game for PC and iPad® lets you hang up your sword . . . and throw down your gauntlet

Hands-on demos at PAX East this weekend, beta test starting soon

Boston, Mass.—March 22, 2013—Pull up a chair across from an old friend at the tavern table and prepare for a few rounds of lively card-vs.-card warfare. Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. laid its virtual cards on the table today with the unveiling of Hearthstone™: Heroes of Warcraft™, a new cross-platform free-to-play game for Windows®, Macintosh®, and iPad®.

In Hearthstone, players build card decks centered around one of nine iconic Warcraft® character classes and duel each other for fun, glory, and the chance to win awesome new cards. PAX East attendees are able to go hands-on with Hearthstone this weekend, and Blizzard will begin beta testing for the game very soon—no, seriously.

“We’ve always loved collectible card games at Blizzard, so it’s been exciting to bring everything we love about the genre to life in Hearthstone,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re putting a lot of focus into creating a fun new game that’s easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Deceptively simple in design but epically engaging, Hearthstone will be instantly accessible to players regardless of their familiarity with Warcraft or collectible card games. Whether players prefer to wield magic or arms in battle, strike from the shadows or head on—or have never given any of that much thought—they’ll be able to jump right in, create a deck, and get in on the card-slinging action.

In addition to honing their skills in practice matches against the computer and taking on their buddies via their Battle.net® friends list, players can challenge each other in two competitive game modes. “Play Mode” features traditional head-to-head battles, with players facing off for a chance to increase their medal ranking and earn card packs along the way. And for a different type of challenge, players can enter “The Forge,” where they start each match by building a deck from a new set of cards, and then use that deck to duel other Forge participants. Aside from winning new cards, players will be able to round out their collections by purchasing new card packs or disenchanting some of their existing cards to craft the ones they’re missing.

With hundreds of cards to choose from, featuring a wide range of colorful Warcraft spells, weapons, and characters, players will have limitless possibilities for developing and fine-tuning their deck-building strategies. Further details about Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft will be announced as development progresses. To learn more about the game, stay tuned to http://www.PlayHearthstone.com.

New Vulcan Heroes Come to Star Trek

On April 23, STAR TREK® The Video Game reunites the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise for an amazing, completely new Star Trek adventure – and alongside Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu will be two new characters making their first appearances in the Star Trek universe

As the game begins, Kirk and Spock are called to aid in the rescue of a mysterious space station that is heading towards catastrophe. Upon their arrival, Kirk and Spock meet a female Vulcan scientist named T’Mar, who plays a prominent role in the action-packed journey that awaits.

!cid_image002_png@01CE1F15

“T’Mar is the captain of the space station and was a childhood friend of Spock,” says Paramount Senior Vice President and Executive Producer Brian Miller. “Her blend of incredible intelligence and unexpected beauty prove intriguing to Kirk.”

As the story progresses, T’Mar joins Kirk and Spock as they travel to New Vulcan, a planet that orbits a binary star and was colonized by Vulcans after the destruction of their home world, seen in 2009’s Star Trek. There, they find Surok – a great Vulcan leader.

“When we crafted this story we wanted to make sure the player realizes that the usually logical, Spock can have very emotional connections to the ones he cares about," adds Miller. "Surok was one of Spock’s childhood mentors and is also T’Mar’s father. Together, they are helping to lead the colonization of New Vulcan.”

As the game progresses, players will learn that Surok is one of the lone survivors of a vicious attack on the New Vulcan planet by the villainous Gorn. Why they have attacked and what they want are at the heart of STAR TREK The Video Game.

!cid_image003_png@01CE1F15

“Video games are not only exciting to play, they’ve become a compelling medium for telling stories, so with Star Trek, we had an amazing opportunity to introduce new characters that are integral to the plot of our game,” Miller says. “Our game’s story is canon to the new Star Trek universe, so we had a great responsibility to get these new characters right, and to make them exciting and meaningful to players.”

Throughout the story, both T’Mar and Surok play key roles in helping Kirk and Spock uncover more about the brutal attacks that the Gorn have been engaging in across the galaxy. They also reveal that the Gorn have stolen a mysterious machine known as the Helios Device – one whose functions could prove disastrous in the hands of an enemy as ruthless as the Gorn.

“For players who want to simply enjoy the experience of playing as Kirk and Spock, Star Trek is going to be a great game experience,” Miller says. “But for those eager to dig deeper into a robust story, we hope it’s an adventure that will excite both longtime fans and game enthusiasts alike.”

Why the Playstation 4 and Not The New Xbox System Is the One We are Getting at Launch

Soon after Sony’s announcement the PlayStation 4 system all eyes turned to Microsoft to see what their response would be. It is widely expected that their new console will be announced sometime between now and E3 this June. There has been much speculation about the abilities, hardware specs, and possible limitations of the new systems but much like the long-running Coke versus Pepsi debate, gamers will soon be forced to pick a side.

While gaming journalism is what we do, we will of course get both systems and sure have many years of solid use out of both. That being said, the PlayStation 4 is the one that we’re going to pick up first and we may possibly delay picking up the new Xbox system for several reasons beyond just personal preferences.

You can see those in our new article here Response Article

First the sins of Xbox past are not easily forgiven or forgotten for me. I do not forget the waves of system failures on the Xbox 360, nor the lousy customer support we were given trying to resolve the issues. One year after the launch of the system, a new system we put into the office, went into the red ring of death mode six days after we received. As such, the system was not a priority for us up until the Kinect came out and Microsoft finally provided a more stable unit with the new black design systems.

Even so, the system did not have the power, features, or the number of exclusive titles that the PlayStation 3 did and let’s not forget the fact that Microsoft has the audacity to require people to pay a monthly fee to play the games that they just paid $59.99 for.

I want to see something innovative from Microsoft rather than something that is imitative. Show me something better than a system where I’m expected to pay to play the games online, has fewer exclusive titles, and hardware that is reportedly below what the PlayStation 4 will offer.

We have heard from third-party developers that while both systems are impressive, the Playstation 4 has an edge over what Microsoft offers and is very eaasy to work with and design for. There is also the matter of the exclusive titles such as new entries into the Killzone and Infamous franchises and you know that a new Uncharted title cannot be far behind.

A recent article at IGN Cites issues in dealing with Microsoft and other factors as reasons developers will be more willing to embrace the new system from Sony. Combine that with the recent entry of NVIDIA to the side of the Playstation 4

I also want to see some exclusives of substance other than the Halo and Gears of War franchises that will make me want to buy the system rather than purchase it and play it rather than have it out of professional obligations.

Now hopefully Microsoft has learned from their past errors and first and foremost will present a system that is stable at launch and not plagued by issues that frustrated so many users of the Xbox 360. Let’s hope that their decision to essentially admit that they were wrong when they endorsed the HD DVD format and reportedly pay to license the Blu-ray technology for the new system is a step in the right direction.

I also want to see both companies do something different from what Nintendo did with the Wii U and ensure that there are plenty of high-quality games upon launch. I was a very big skeptic of the new Nintendo system but was eventually won over and purchase the deluxe set at launch. That being said, aside from the new Super Mario Brothers, and ZombiU, there’s been little on the system that has made me want to play it is not uncommon for our system to go a week or two between sessions when we are not reviewing a title on it.,

As the old saying that talk is cheap as any resident state of Missouri will proudly tell you, “Show Me”, is their motto. Sony has made a very intriguing and interesting introduction to their new system that despite some questions and potential areas of concern does look to be an innovative step forward for gamers that shows enough promise to get me excited about the possibilities it offers.

Now it’s up to Microsoft to show that they are prepared to offer gamers a system that will provide power, reliability, innovation, and not simply rely on their brand-name for sales and hype. I’m extremely curious about what they’ll come up with but for now thanks to their impressive reveal and years of trouble-free enjoyment from the PlayStation 3, Sony is getting our money at launch.

I want to be very clear on this, I am not saying the new Xbox will be a bad system and that people should not get it nor be excited for it. Far from it, I am saying that based on what we have heard from sources in game development and the industry, both sound like very impressive systems and both systems will be taking their place on our shelf of consoles. That being said, for me, based on what I have heard about both systems from those I trust, and based on past issues we have had with the Xbox 360 and original system will take a wait and see approach to the new Xbox system.

What Must The Call of Duty Franchise Do to Avoid Long Term Fatigue

Every year around the holidays, gamers the world over look forward to the release of the latest game in the Call of Duty Series. With multiple developers working on titles,, the series has managed to have a new installment become as part of the holidays as family gatherings, food, and presents.

With the release of the Revolution map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and the upcoming E3 conference in June, many gamers have speculated as to what the next game in the series will be about.

Rumors have surfaced that the new title will be set in the Modern Warfare storyline and will feature characters from the previous titles in that series. Regardless I am certain that record sales will follow whenever the title is released.

I have been a big fan of the series from day one, and I remember fondly playing the original game, and being blown away with the new look, setting, and gameplay of Modern Warfare when it first arrived.

While I have never agreed with a lot of the venom that some gamers have directed to the game, I can understand that for some gamers, they think it is time for a change in direction for the franchise.

This is a difficult situation as the games generate incredible amounts of revenue and it would be unwise from an financial sense to not have a new title on the market for the holidays, especially since demand is so high.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 offered some new wrinkles to the series such as multiple endings, challenge missions, and more online features and customizations, many critics cited that it was simply more of the same.

While I disagree with this, I do understand that for some players, the look, gameplay, and features of the series might do with some changes, as the talented team of developers behind the series may be bumping their heads with what they can do with the current gaming engine.

Hence the dilemma, a switch to a new gaming engine would likely result in delays and cause a lucrative holiday season to be missed. I am sure this is something that has already been discussed and the team has a plan in place for when the next technological leap in the series will debut.

It is possible that the 2014 title may be Black Ops 3, the future of the series offers some interesting options.

I think most players would agree that their favorite part of the game is the multiplayer mode, as the fast paced action, customization, and social aspects of the game are a huge appeal.

Most players can complete the game’s campaigns in 6-8 hours of play so the multiplayer as well as the map packs that are released throughout the year allow gamers an incredible amount of replay options.

One of my favorite maps was Moon from the original Black Ops as blasting Zombies in a space setting was tons of fun. I have often said that a game set in the future could be tons of fun.

Imagine jetpacks, laser weapons, and a lack of gravity offering a new challenge and dimension to online play. There was an online game from a European developer a few years back that had teams battle in the area on or above the moon, and it had some real challenge to it. Whenever a weapon was fired or a jetpack ignited, it was like sending up a flare to every enemy player on the map as to your location.

There was also the recoil physics of firing weapons in zero g, as the larger the bang, then the further the recoil.

I also think that more co-op would be great as I have loved the two-man missions when I have played them. Imagine a game where you can play through it with a squad of 4-8 players where you must work as team to get the job done. Add to that roles such as pilot, medic, tech, etc where the success of a mission will hinge on keeping certain members of your team alive. No matter how valuable the data, it would be of no use to you if the pilot was killed and you were forced to make your escape on foot thus increasing the time in a hot zone.

With the pending release of the Playstation 4 and a new Xbox console on the way, the time to take the series to the next level may be sooner than we think, and I for one would love to see where they go with it.

It is important in my opinion to be innovative rather than imitative to avoid fatigue setting into the series and keep it fresh and viable for the long-term.

Bungie Presents Destiny!

We have two videos for you as well as the press release.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE CREATORS OF HALO®AND THE PUBLISHER OF CALL OF DUTY® UNVEIL DESTINYTM

Epic, Sci-Fi Universe Introduces Innovative Persistent, Online World Filled with Sweeping Adventures

Multi-platform Game Takes Console Online Gaming to a New Level

Santa Monica, CA - February 18, 2013 - A new generation of gaming is upon us. Today, Activision Publishing, Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), together with critically-acclaimed developer Bungie, revealed the first sneak peak of their partnership. The game, called Destiny, is an ambitious evolution of the first-person action genre that brings gamers together in a shared, persistent world. The result of a large-scale collaboration between Activision, the publisher of such mega franchises as Call of Duty, Skylanders Spyro's AdventureTM and Skylanders GiantsTM, and Bungie, the creators of Halo®, Destiny is poised to become the next advancement in interactive entertainment by melding first-person action gaming with a persistent, dynamic online world.

Destiny combines Bungie's trademark grand scope, sci-fi storytelling and adventures with visceral first-person action gaming that takes place in an unfolding, cinematic universe. Additionally, Destiny delivers a unique social gaming experience to consoles by offering players a connected, living world that they can explore, combined with vibrant social spaces where they can congregate and celebrate achievements, and share remarkable adventures grouped with friends or solo.

"Bungie defined first-person action games over a decade ago with Halo, and with Destiny they will evolve the genre once again," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Destiny is a world that evolves. It is a world with wide boundaries that allows you to roam and explore. It is a world where, even in story mode, you could encounter other players on their own adventures. And of course, it is a world that brings all of this together with the visceral, heart pounding immediacy of an expertly crafted first-person action title. We are very excited to bring this ambitious, innovative and creative game to players around the world."

"Activision focuses on doing a few things, exceptionally well. And Bungie has had the same ethos," Hirshberg continued. "Together we are focusing the considerable resources, creativity and energy of both organizations to do something new, something ambitious, but most importantly, something fun."

Set in the distant future, Destiny casts players as Guardians of the last city on Earth, who will traverse the ancient ruins of our solar system from the red dunes of Mars to the lush jungles of Venus. Able to wield incredible power, players must battle humanity's enemies and reclaim all that was lost during the collapse of mankind's Golden Age. In a story-driven universe, Destiny's saga unfolds through grand talesand sweeping adventures by immersinggamers in a bold new world filled with cooperative, competitive, public, and social activities, all seamlessly connected. Bungie's new next-generation game engine will allowDestiny to come to life on both the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, as well as other future console platforms.

"Destiny is the game that we've been dreaming of building for years. We couldn't be more pleased about our extraordinary collaboration with Activision. We finally have the right partner, team and technology to bring the experience to millions of players worldwide," said Harold Ryan, Bungie president. "Destiny will draw players into a world filled with mystery, action, and adventure, but most importantly, Destiny is more than a disc in a drive, it is a living social universe filled with other players."

"Not only does Destiny look amazing, but its new living world will change the way players think of co-operative online gaming," said global retailer GameStop president Tony Bartel. "This is just the type of innovation the game industry has been waiting for and I'm anxious for players to experience the vast universe of Destiny."

For exclusive updates, follow the official Destiny social channels at www.facebook.com/DestinyTheGame and @DestinyTheGame on Twitter, and interact directly with the developers at www.Bungie.net. Pre-order the game now at select retailers around the world. Activision reiterated that although Bungie's amazing new world was revealed today, Activision has not included the launch in its 2013 outlook and there should be no speculation or expectation of a different result.

The Making of Star Trek: The Video Game Video and Explore the Enterprise Like Never Before in STAR TREK The Video Game

For more than four decades, the U.S.S. Enterprise has been a majestic icon of adventure and excitement. On board, her crew explores strange new worlds, seeks out new civilizations …

But what fans have known of the iconic starship has largely been limited to what is seen in movies and on television. That will change on April 23 when STAR TREK The Video Game gives players a deeper and much more interactive look inside the U.S.S. Enterprise.

“One of the great joys of video games is the opportunity to take audiences to places that are only hinted at in traditional film and TV projects,” said Brian Miller, senior vice president of Paramount Pictures and executive producer of STAR TREK The Video Game. “Giving gamers the opportunity to explore the U.S.S. Enterprise is one of the more exciting aspects of our video game and one that we can’t wait to share with Star Trek fans and gamers worldwide.”

Playing as Kirk and Spock, gamers must face-off against the villainous Gorn – the formidable enemy first introduced in the classic 1967 Star Trek television episode “Arena.” Their battles will take them into familiar locations, like the bridge, transporter room and the engine room – but also deep into many areas of the ship that have never been seen on film before, including the Enterprise’s turbolift shafts, observation lounge, engineering decks and officer’s quarters.

The producers and development team of STAR TREK The Video Game worked closely with the entire creative team responsible for the re-imagined 2009 blockbuster Star Trek film to ensure what players see will look and feel remarkably authentic.

“The Enterprise is not just a ship – she is one of the most important characters in all of Star Trek. Our goal from day one was to make sure that the Enterprise looks, feels and even sounds as true to life as anything players have ever seen,” Miller said. “Hopefully, players will come away feeling as if they’re ready to be part of the crew themselves!”

Press Release on Sale of THQ

THQ Just sent this news to us.

Jan. 24, 2013 05:35 UTC
Court Grants Motion to Approve Sale of THQ Inc. Assets
Majority of Titles, Studios Expected to Continue Development with Financial Backing of New Owners

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– THQ Inc. (OTC: THQIQ), a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, today announced that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court has granted a motion to approve a sale of the majority of THQ’s assets to multiple buyers. The company expects the Court to enter a formal order tomorrow.

The Court approved the sales of three of THQ’s owned studios and games in development, as well as Evolve, a working title under development at Turtle Rock Studios, Homefront 2, Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth. Under the terms of the agreements with the successful and approved bidders, the THQ estate will receive approximately $72 million, making the total estimated value of the estate $100 million including certain assets and other intellectual properties which were excluded from the sale.

The Court approved the sale of Relic Studios to Sega Corporation for $26.6 million; the sale of Volition Inc. and Metro: Last Light to Koch Media GmbH for $22.3 million and $5.9 million, respectively; the sale of Homefront 2 to Crytek GmbH for $0.5 million; the sale of Evolve to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. for $10.9 million; and the sale of THQ Montreal and South Park: The Stick of Truth to Ubisoft LLC for $2.5 million and $3.3 million, respectively. Excluded from the sales were the company’s publishing businesses, Vigil Games, and certain other assets and intellectual properties, which will remain part of the THQ estate and will continue in the Chapter 11 process.

Brian Farrell, Chairman and CEO of THQ, noted, “While we had hoped that the restructuring process would allow the company to remain intact, I am heartened that the majority of our studios and games will continue under new ownership. It has been my pleasure to work alongside this great group of people, and I am proud of the imaginative and artistic games that our team has created. Although we will no longer be able to work together with a unified mission, I am confident that the talent we have assembled will continue to make an impression on the video game industry. For those whose positions are not likely to continue, I sincerely regret this outcome and we will be meeting with you over the next few days to discuss the transition.”

Jason Rubin, President of THQ, added, “I was brought in eight months ago to help turn this ship around, and while I’m disappointed that we could not effect a sale for the entire operating business, I am pleased that the new buyers will be providing jobs to many of our very talented personnel. When we first announced the sale process, I said I would be happy if the company’s games and people had a bright future, even if it meant I did not have a job at the end of it. And I still feel that way.”

The new owners have not articulated their plans for the assets, or their intentions to extend employment to THQ employees included in the sale. THQ expects the new owners to extend employment to most employees and to continue development of the games they purchased that are currently in development. The assets that are not included in the sale agreements will remain part of the Chapter 11 case. THQ will continue to seek appropriate buyers, if possible.

THQ will continue to employ a small number of headquarters staff beyond January 25 to assist with the transition.

Qualified bids received by January 22 were reviewed by the company and the creditors committee. Through an auction process that lasted 22 hours yesterday and today, the successful bidders were determined, and the hearing to approve the sales took place this afternoon. Ten bidders participated in the proceedings, including bids for the entire company as well as for individual assets. The sales are expected to close tomorrow, January 24.

Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. had submitted a “stalking horse” bid for substantially all of THQ’s assets in December 2012. In accordance with Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, the Court supervised an auction to determine the highest and best bid(s) for the company’s assets in accordance with the bid procedures approved by the Court. Clearlake will receive a break-up fee of $1 million, as stated in its stalking horse asset purchase agreement.

THQ and its domestic business units filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Dec. 19, 2012. The Chapter 11 case will continue for THQ.
