Sony Reportedly Has Not Set A New Date For The PS5 Event And Why They May Delay A Few More Weeks

When Sony correctly postponed their planned PS5 reveal due to the current events; many assumed it would happen in a week or so. I conversed with a person at Sony about our post-event coverage plans and they told me that they are unsure of when the new date will be.  While it is only one day after the postponement, Sony has not set a date yet for when they will hold their anticipated PS5 Showcase.

I figured part of this was the fact that it is simply too soon and you do not want to commit to a date so close to a postponement but also to make sure the new date is solid as the last thing they want to do is postpone again after making a new announcement.

Another factor facing Sony is the number of events that are currently scheduled. With E3 supposed to have taken place next week; studios have jumped to fill that void with events of their own.

The Guerilla Collective is taking place from June 6^th-8^th with EA set to hold their event on June 11^th. Factor in that 505 Games is still planning to hold their event and there are likely several announcements and reveals that were planned for the week of E3 that were put on hold by world events.

Sony is faced with a tough situation as they are being very respectful to the situation but also facing the fact that they have people eager to see what they have while watching their competition and third party companies make multiple reveals.

The way I see it is that Sony likely had the vast majority of their presentation finalized and since they are not worried about venues or dates; they have the luxury of being able to announce the event and hold it a few days later as they likely have done the bulk of the heavy lifting.

There is also the real possibility of a trickle-down effect from the postponement. Companies that were scheduled to be revealed on Thursday now have to suppress their own publicity plans until the PS5 reveal happens.

EA had a Madden event planned for the other day but opted to postpone over the world events. They had the luxury of a June 11^th event already scheduled which likely would have featured the game already and now almost certain ally will.

The delay will likely only be a couple of weeks and the June calendar already looks loaded with plenty of gaming events scheduled and likely several interesting announcements to follow.

Sony has been the big key for many gamers as they not only are anxious to get more information on the console but to get an idea as to what launch titles will be available for the system and which games will follow.

As someone who worked with two game companies I know all too well that timing is everything in this industry and that schedules are often subject to change. Sony likely will spend the extra time to further refine their presentation and give gamers a very interesting presentation that will spark much coverage and debate as anticipation was through the roof for Thursday’s reveal and now the intensity and expectations have only grown.

Regardless of when it will happen; Sony is to be lauded for taking a very compassionate and sensible approach to show they have their priorities in order and have set an example that I am happy to see others in the industry and entertainment world follow.

Time will tell what Sony has in store but for now they have done a valuable service to the community and will make the announcement as soon as they believe it is the right time to do so.
