General Overview of GED Practice Test

The GED test can prove to be very helpful in certain situations. If you are someone who is over the age of 16 and does not yet hold a high school diploma, then you can benefit from this exam. The certificate that you get after passing the GED test is equivalent to a high school diploma. This might prove helpful because there are many colleges and universities that accept GED certification for admission. Ever since it was first introduced in 1942, over 17 million people have passed the GED tests. These exams require quite a bit of preparation; it is not one of those tests that you can pass even without studying. Considering the fact that the certificate is equivalent to a high school diploma,you should be ready for some challenging questions.

GED Practice Test: Introduction

The GED test consists of four parts, and each part is different from the other. You will find general overview of the exam sections below:

  • Reasoning Through Language Arts

The first part of the test is known as Reasoning through Language Arts, or RLA. This part contains 3 sections, all of which revolve around your ability to read and write along with your understanding of the use of Standard English. You should have a good vocabulary for this part, and also be good at writing and reading. Without these basic skills, you will have difficulties with completing this section. You have to answer all of the questions in this section in just 150 minutes.

  • Social Studies

The Social Studies part of the exam is quite interesting, as the questions that you will find here are derived from various topics including economics, history, government, geography and more. The question types used in this part are drag-and-drop, multiple-choice, hot spot and fill in the blanks. If you wish to do well in this part of the GED exam, then you must be able to understand charts, graphs, illustrations,andtext passages. The duration of this section is 90 minutes, you will not be given any more time.

  • Mathematical Reasoning

Then comes the part that is known as Mathematical Reasoning. This section of the test consists of algebraic as well as quantitative problems in the form of multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, fill in the blank, or hotspot questions. For this part of the test, an on-screen calculator is available however if you do not wish to use that calculator you may bring your own. Formulas for the problems will also be provided to you. You will be given a total of 90 minutes to answer everything in this part of the GED test.

  • Science

The last part of the exam is none other than Science, and questions from three main topics are included in its sections. The main topics are: physical science, life science, earth and space science. If you wish to write this section well, then you should have some good skills in reading and a decent scientific knowledge, as well as be able to understand the data that is presented in the question. The duration of this section is 90 minutes.

The passing score for the GED test is 150-169 points, so if you are anywhere below 150 points, then you are not eligible for the certificate. However, if you get between 170 and 200 then you will earn an “Honors” score.

GED Practice Test: Way to Prepare for the Exam

The best way to prepare for the GED exam is with the help of practice tests. Using thesetests, you can learn a lot about the actual questions that can appear in the real exam. And just like in the real exam, the GED practice test are also divided into four arts. The first part is mathematical reasoning which consists of 40 questions. 45 percent of its questions belong to quantitative problems, while the rest 55 percent come from algebra. This section will test your ability to deal with such concepts as circles, polygons, perimeter and more.

The next section is Reasoning through Language Arts, and in this part you will have to focus a lot on reading and writing. The reading passages that you find in the section are carefully selected, with factors like region, ethnic backgrounds, age and culture being taken into account. These passages are derived from other literary sources. In order to respond to these questions correctly, the candidate must demonstrate high-quality comprehension, analysis,and reading skills.

This is just the reading portion, while the writing one is a whole different story. The writing portion comprises of multiple-choice questions that require from the student to make edits and revisions to sentences. The passages chosen here are from various informational sources and community documents, which is why it is not as easy as it sounds.

The next part of the exam is science, and it needs you to develop a very specific set of skills. With a total of 30 multiple-choice questions to answer, you need to be able to comprehend and give scientific reasoning. You should also be able to show your knowledge in scientific models, processes,and theories.

In the last part of the GED Practice Sample Questions, you will have to answer some questions related to social studies. Again, answering these questions is not as easy as it might seem, because you should possess specific knowledge to successfully write this exam section.
