Are you planning on taking a trip to NYC in the near future? If so, there is no denying that seeing a Broadway show is a necessity. There are 41 theatres on Broadway, all of which have a different show for you to enjoy. However, not all of the shows on Broadway are suitable for children, so if you are planning on enjoying a show as a family, you need to give some thought to the musical or show you are going to go to. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best Broadway shows and musicals for children in further detail.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – There is only one place to begin, and this is with one of the most recent shows to hit Broadway. Harry Potter was well and truly made for a stage like this when you consider the magic, mystery and wizardry entailed with the books. The Broadway version of Harry Potter has not disappointed, receiving rave reviews and many award nominations. So, what story is told? Of course, we won’t give it away, but it focused on a time where Harry works at the Ministry of Magic and is an overworked employee. He has three children, and one of these kids has been ‘cursed’ with his legacy. It is a great tale that mixes past and present beautifully.

Aladdin – A popular Disney story and movie, Aladdin on Broadway is a beautiful mixture of humour, costumes, and music, brought together in a magical love story. For those who are not familiar with Aladdin, the story is about a young boy who finds a magical lamp. The hilarious genie appears and grants him three wishes. We won’t reveal what these wishes are, though! This show is suitable for children that are six-years-old or older.

Stomp – If you have slightly older children and you are looking for more of a non-traditional show on Broadway, Stomp comes highly recommended. Stomp is a show that features performers that use unconventional ways to create heart-pounding music. By unconventional means, we mean that the performances create a symphony for the ears and eyes by using everything from buckets and brooms to lids and garbage cans. This production is suitable for older children because they will able to understand the show’s underlying humour.

Lion King – You did not think we would talk about Broadway shows without mentioning the Lion King, did you? Another show that is based on a classic Disney tale, the Lion King will take your breath away. Humans are transformed into animals on stage with the most incredible costumes and makeup. You can expect all of the classic songs from the film itself, and there is a lot of humour along the way too. This play is perfect for all ages.

Wicked – The final show that we recommended for kids on Broadway is Wicked. Wicked is a unique twist on the classic that everyone is familiar with – Wizard of Oz. According to TodayTix, Wicked is appropriate for children 8+, so if you are going to the theatre with very young kids, you may want to give this one a miss. However, if your children are over the age of eight-years-old, this really is a show you won’t want to miss. In 2004, the production picked up four Tony Awards. The production tells the untold tale of the witches of Oz. You may be aware of the Wicked Witch of the West, and this production tells the story of Elphaba, which is the wicked witch, and Glinda, the good witch. It reveals how both met and it takes you on the journey of their friendship and broken friendship.

So there you have it: five of the best Broadway shows and musicals for children. No matter whether you decide to go and see The Lion King, Wicked, or any other type of show on Broadway, one thing is for certain: you will have an amazing time that you will cherish for years and years to come. If you have never experienced a show on Broadway before, you are in for a treat. People are always surprised by just how much of a spectacle these shows are.
