Dynasty Warriors Unleashed

Greetings & Salutations Everyone!

Please excuse my recent absence. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the studio the last few months. However, it was well worth the wait because I once again have the incredibly good fortune of presenting to you, for your consideration, another excellent game! What makes this one especially unique besides the amazing reviews, is that it introduces a celebrated gaming franchise to mobile platforms.

Based off of Koei Texmo’s Dynasty Warriors franchise comes ‘Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed’ from NEXON Korea Corporation. Welcome to the beginning of the era of the Three Kingdoms. As one of the generals under the command of the Warlord Liu Bei, you and the warriors who serve with you take on the challenge of fighting legions of enemy soldiers, captains, and heroes in an effort to unite the Three Kingdoms. The mobile version follows the original stories quite closely and features most of if not all the characters from the original franchise. As with the earlier games you must decimate your enemies in order to bring about the the prophecy foreseen by your ancestors. Unlike earlier versions of the games where you would choose from one character to the next, you choose three heroes to that will make up your squad. You can chose from among 48 characters from the original franchise to serve as your generals and officers utilizing each one’s unique abilities and skills to create an unbeatable officer corps. One of the three you choose will be your ‘squad leader’ while the other two will jointly serve as your second-in-command/back up. You can also enlist the aide of AI-controlled soldiers to provide support but only to a point.

There are five game modes:

Conquest – Basically you take control of the playing field

Raid – Steal from your opponent

Skirmish – Participate in real time combat with up to 4 other players

War Supply – Take control of mines and other resources within the game

Boss Fight – Participate in a raid against a level boss alone or with other players

The controls to the game are actually quite user-friendly. You have a standard directional control on the left side and on the right you have actions, special abilities, combat, etc. It took less than 5 minutes for me to become accustomed to it if that. As expected you can outfit your officers with armor, weapons, and other accessories/resources to increase the strengths and abilities of your characters.

For a free-to-play game, to say I was amazed is an understatement. The scale and vastness of the ‘in game world’ and the sheer amount of content within this world seemed far to rich and complex for a free game. It requires about 2.25GB of space but once you play the game, you’ll understand why. Yes, as you have safely guessed there is an in-app store where you can purchase credits, supplies, and other necessities for extended gameplay. The game is available for both Android and iOS. A network connection is required for gameplay as well so be sure to have a seriously reved-up wifi connection at your disposal.

I’ve seen the phrases ‘Sick’, ‘Epic, and ‘Slick’ used to describe the game in one word and I would most define concur with those descriptions. ‘Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed’ will definitely be a mainstay for my tablet. I’m going to give it 5 out of 5 stars.
