Our Second Review Of Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is a fun movie, but the hype surrounding it gets the last laugh.

Like many of you, I’ve been basking in the glory of all the Marvel and DC movies gracing the silver screen. I had high hopes for Suicide Squad. I went into it with guarded optimism. I wanted to believe.
The movie opens with an explanation of who our anti-heroes are, and why they’re locked away “in a hole” that’s been “thrown away.” They set the stage with some grit and some killing. Deadshot, Killer Croc, Diablo, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, and of course, Harley Quinn; an assemblage of killers, villains, criminals, and miscreants. They are extremely dangerous, and treated with the utmost caution, even during feeding.
Enter Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who has a plan. She wants to use the worst of the worst to fight the recent resurgence of meta-humans. Her initial request is turned down, but when an unstoppable threat comes to Midway City, Waller is given the go-ahead to deploy her new, expendable squad of bad guys.
After inserting explosives with remote detonators into their necks, Waller commands them to fight or die.
I must make this clear: Suicide Squad is a good movie. It’s a really good movie. The grit, storytelling, action, and craziness are all there.
Leto is fantastic, but he does not deliver the performance you’re anticipating. His presence definitely added to the film, but you won’t be moved by his portrayal of The Joker. To be fair, the film was not about him; I don’t believe he was given the time or space to develop his interpretation more.
However, that is no excuse for the singular chuckle we get from him. Aside from that mini-cackle, the iconic, maniacal laughter of The Joker is nowhere to be found. Despite being well done, the character was still a let down.
My movie-going companion summed up the movie well with this remark: “I’m a die-hard David Ayer fanatic; the man is a cinematic god to me. This was so far from what he is capable of doing that it’s hard to believe he even did it.”
If you are a fan of the source material, you will be entertained. If you go in believing the hype, you will surely be disappointed.
Harley Quinn stole the show; she was perfectly played by Margot Robbie. Her ass is the second best part of the film, and it wasn’t even acting.
Go see it and be entertained.
4 out of 5 stars.
