Preacher Pilot Review

Another comic book adaptation makes its way to AMC this summer for its series line up. Preacher, a comic book series created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion and published by DC Comics’ stars Dominic Cooper who plays the lead role of Jesse Custer, a preacher from a small town in Texas who has started to lose faith in his beliefs. He drinks, smokes, and has a dark past; all typical traits of the ever popular anti-hero.

The first episode seems to follow three characters who I assume will be the main trio for the show, Jesse Custer, Tulip O’Hare, and Cassidy an Irish vampire. The episode mainly focuses on Jesse Custer and his life as a preacher in a failing church, where he himself is beginning to lose faith while dealing with people who attend his church. While all this is happening the show jumps to different locations around the world where clergy men are being possessed then dying due to a supernatural being. The episode in total is really just an origin story episode, the standard type of pilot that most comic book adaptations start out as, but for a pilot I thought it was really good. Sometimes the first episode can be dry or not really have enough to hook an audience. However, I felt this gave just enough to keep the audience curious but also not give everything away. The last 5 minutes of the episode made me want to tune in and watch the second episode of the series.

The first episode also had a healthy dose of gore, much to AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead I feel AMC has definitely hit its stride in the amount of gore it shows. However, I need to address the elephant in the room from the pilot. The kid who sinned and looks like his mouth has turned into a butthole; I really don’t get it. I understand he is being punished that is why his face has gone all weird but it looks ridiculous; I’m sure it’s a plot point that will come up later in the show up it looked really off.

I would definitely recommend checking out Preacher on AMC, which airs Sunday nights. Also the pilot is free on AMC at the moment so a no hassle commitment to go check it out! As someone who only had a very brief knowledge of the comics I know I’ll be watching this Sunday to stay up to date on the most current episode and I hope you will be too.
