Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition: Hands On At San Diego Comic Con 2015

While covering Comic Con 2015, I got a chance to play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in the Xbox Lounge. I got into a multiplay game and noticed that the graphics had indeed been enhanced and do look better. The other thing I noticed was that the game did not move with the speed that I would expect a modern game to move at.

For example, I could dive, and roll with no issues, but the amount of time my characters took to cross a room seemed slow and plodding.

The gameplay was solid as the guns were as efficient as always and I was able to find my targets often, with devastating results. I must admit, I do still take delight when an enemy is struggling to get up and finishing them off in brutal fashion.

The cover system still worked very well, and there was a nice up close, melee kill where blade met skull and a fountain of gore. That being said, it was very retro to me as despite the enhanced graphics, I kept thinking that I was playing something from the past, not a shiny new update of a classic.

The game while, fun, became old very fast and before our session was over I was already starting to look around at what other games were in the lounge and what I would look to play next.

To be fair, my time was limited to one multiplayer match although I did spectate on others throughout the weekend.

For me, this version would be ideal for hardcore fans or those who are new to the series, others may want to simply wait for the next in the series to arrive.

I just want them to fox the lousy and inconsistent hit detection and damage. Also, they need to improve the response time between button press and actual on screen action. There is a delay currently.

I thought it was just me as I had not played the games in a while but it seemed a bit slow. I did see a delay when I went to shoot after a roll.

Definitely a delay before the game reacts, especially when you press the button to roadie run and diving.
