How Sony Once Again Dominated The Console War At E3 2015

Like a Gun fighter from the Old West, Sony took the stage at their E3 2015 showcase with a cocky swagger as they knew they had plenty of ammunition in their arsenal to delight the huge audience in attendance and the thousands watching online.

As the lights dimmed and the show started, Sony wasted no time in dropping the hammer with the announcement and impressive trailer for The Last Guardian.

That alone for some would have been enough had Sony opted to drop the microphone there and walk off the stage in triumph.

Sony did not stop there and unleashed a barrage that went from No Mans Sky, several new games, and then they pressed down the hammer. Project Morpheus was expected to have a much larger role but what Sony teased, including the ability to have up to four players in the same V.R. game in a new title that is being worked on caught the attention of gamers everywhere.

With the business deals for Disney Infinity 3.0 and Star Wars Battlefront announced and looking better than ever, the hits just kept on coming when Sony announced that Call of Duty was now making the Playstation the console of choice and that all future DLC would appear first on the Playstation.

Sony seemed to delight in piling on the exclusives, business partnerships, and third party titles to the audience and one has to wonder if despite Microsoft’s best shot earlier if Sony knew they had this one in the bag.

For me it comes down to this, Microsoft announced a new Gears of War and that players will soon be able to play select Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One. Nice features for sure but to me it seemed like a nostalgia trip.

Sony on the other hand clearly had the emphasis on new, innovative, and moving to the future which is a big reason why they had sold so many systems as their strong lineup and constant innovation has struck a resounding chord with fans.

While we have to see how the products Sony revealed look and play when completed, Sony shows no signs of slowing down, and the swagger of the PS4 keeps growing.

Wow…even some “journalists” are butthurt over MS surprising Sony. Some of you just have to deal with the fact MS had a very good E3 and outdid Sony for once. Even Sony execs pretty much gave this one to MS.

Sony announced more titles, more business deals, and had a better showing. E3 publishes a recap for us and I can tell you that everyone had pretty much the same thoughts, nice job Microsoft but Sony did better. More games, more business deals, and more buzz. That is Sony. The only thing anyone is talking about from MS is that they will be able to play some Xbox 360 games. Sony, well you get The Last Guardian, No Mans Sky, Morpheus being able to take up to 4 players in some games, Call of Duty coming to PS first and so on.

What? In what dimension do you live exactly? One of the craziest comments I have read.

This was literally the worst article I’ve ever read. Sony showed multiplats, timed exclusives and 1 triple A exclusive. Who knew an opinion piece could just be flat out factually wrong.

More exclusives, more sales, and more buzz, as well as more business deals. That is Sony not Microsoft.

Well considering how I was at E3, at booths and conferences, I would say there is more fact in it than most comments. Anyone who was objective at E3 would tell you that Sony had a better showing and that their games caused more talk than anything Microsoft presented. The facts are in the sales, and Sony has them.

      There is no PS agenda.

Nearly everyone said Sony had the better conference for various reasons.

There is a reason why Shmennue 3 is the fastest kickstarter in history.

There is a reason why FF7 remake announcement is the most watched video.

There is a reason why Horizion and U4 shown at Sony’s conference have won the most awards at E3.

While I disagree with you saying that Sony “Dominated” E3, it is your opinion and not mine. I think it’s interesting that partnering with Activision for CoD is considered something anybody is happy about, it’s CoD. Nobody has cared that Xbox has had DLC early in how many iterations of that tired series? As far as everything else Microsoft showed, you failed to mention:

Games – Halo 5, Recore, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Sea of Thieves, Gears Ultimate Edition, Gears 4, Rare Replay, Forza 6, PvZ: GW2, Dark Souls 3, Cuphead and other indie titles (Gigantic, Ion, etc) Fable Legends and a Division Beta
Other: Hololense demo, free Copy of Fallout 3 with purchase of Fallout 4 as well as PC mods, Xbox Elite Controller, partnering with Valve VR and an early access type approach to Xbox games.

I wouldn’t consider this a nostalgia trip because of a game (Rare Replay) and the added benefit of being able to finally box up my Xbox 360 and play some of those games (more as time passes) on my Xbox one. I find it funny that everybody would love backwards compatibility on their console of choice but look, Xbox has it and PS doesn’t “Microsoft is stuck in the past!” they say.

“Sony had the emphasis on new, innovative and moving to the future” which is why everybody won’t shut up about an HD remake of a game from 1997 and Uncharted 4.

How many of those games will appear on other platforms? Sony revealed more exclusive games and content and that is why they have the perception in the industry of having done a better show.

Bummer that you keep having to defend your position even though it was presented fairly & is constructed of all valid points. First off, I’m willing to bet that none of those people above are a part of the industry, or that they even attended E3. People seem to miss out on the fact that these trade shows have a palpable buzz and you miss so much when you aren’t there on the show floor, rubbing elbows w/ these journalists, developers & publishers.

I felt the same way you did, its great to remember the past, but these consoles are about new experiences, of which there were few on hand at MS’ show. It was great seeing the first gameplay of long awaited titles, but there were really only 2 reveals at MS’ show, one of which was purely cg w/o a hint of what the ultimate gameplay would entail, and the other was the potentially promising Sea of Thieves. Only issue at hand that most any gamer would point out is that neither of those titles hold the promise of something like Horizon, and having the first look at the game be actual gameplay was a very smart move from Sony. UC4 alone would’ve won it for me, and apparently we didn’t even get to see the best parts from the behind closed doors demo. ND know how to keep a franchise fresh, and I just didn’t see as many new ideas at Halo or Rise of the Tomb Raider’s showings to make me feel like it was anything other than more of the same personally.

Both great shows for sure, but for my tastes, Sony just felt fresher to me, and apparently I’m not the only one who felt that way.

Wait seriously, that’s your response to my swath of information you decided to leave out of your article? I can say the same thing about Sony’s press conference. How many of the games at theirs will be on another platform at some point? Sony AAA 7, Microsoft AAA 6, not that big a difference by itself, but factoring in everything else makes a difference too.

        You said it yourself:

“Sony on the other hand clearly had the emphasis on new, innovative, and moving to the future…”

But failed to compare their new and innovative (Oculus) to Microsofts new and innovative (Hololense) because you are too Sony biased to put extra effort into calling out Microsoft outside of the piss poor, two sentences you managed to squeeze into this article.

I can pretty much promise that none of Sony’s exclusives will be on any other platform. The same cannot be said for Microsoft. I had hands on both. Hololense is ok, but I need to see actual games for it before I get that thrilled. The fact is MS has a console that is not as powerful, does not have as many exclusives, and is still playing for 2nd place. Sony is pulling away despite MS doing everything they can. Why does every company now use a PS 4 or PC to showcase their games? They know the PS 4 is a better system for gaming. As such, more and more developers are doing exclusives with Sony. Gears of War and Halo are simply not enough for me to get excited over. I only play exclusives on a console, and for me Sony has outperformed MS in terms of quality and selection every time. That is why they are crushing MS in sales, and that is why they continue to outshine them. MS did great, Sony did better and that is a fact that most in the industry share and consumers have supported time and time again.

Oh, so you can promise what a developer will do, despite you having absolutely no connection with most of them? No, you can’t. Unless Sony helped fund the project or published it, a developer will be able to do as they please. You aren’t addressing the point I brought up however and that is how you think Sony is so forward thinking and innovative and how Microsoft is just a nostalgia trip with Gears. I feel like I’m arguing with a wall. You think you’re giving both a fair shot and bringing up great points for both according to your reply above, yet you gave Microsoft a half-hearted shout out. You are Sony biased, end of discussion. You may continue to lie as much as you’d like, but it spills out through your writing. PS, really? You’re gonna bring up that tired statement about PS4 being more powerful. SMH. If you are simply to state that you straight-up like Sony/PS4 better just because then I’ll stop hounding you because it’s your opinion and that’s what you’re entitled to. Just stop pretending to care about both.

As I said I prefer the PC to any console as that is my system of choice. That being said, the PS4 does tend to have more games in 1080 and advantages due to DDR 5 and hardware. You do have some serious anger issues about something as trivial as a console. The fact is that more consumers and companies prefer the PS4 which is why they not only have a huge sales leads, but have more deals with third party companies and are the demo platform of choice. Microsoft made a huge mess of the Xbox One from the start and have done a solid job of getting things improved but it still has work to go. I have no issues with it, I just want to see some true AAA exclusives that I want to play and cannot play on the PC.

        1. You never once said in any of your replies to me or your article that you prefer PC over anything else.

        2. I’m not angry about a console, like you said that’s trivial. I’m irritated with you, just you. You honestly think you were fair to both, you weren’t, (summing up Microsoft’s conference in two sentences, while stating everything Sony said at theirs is not being fair to both.) You aren’t addressing the actual issue I’m bringing up either, which is why you think Sony’s conference was so forward thinking and innovative compared to Microsoft’s nostalgia trip? You’ve just brought up that the PS4 is more powerful and multiplatform games are better on it and 1080p and all the same tired stuff that has been said since the launch of both. I get it’s more powerful, but that doesn’t have anything to do with their 2015 conference.
