Is 4K The New Battleground In The PS4 Vs. Xbox One Battle?

Rumors have recently arisen that Sony would be announcing a new version of the PS4 with a larger hard drive as well as a lower wattage requirement. While this is welcome news for some, especially those who have yet to purchase a PS4 system, one has to wonder what else the future holds for the system.

With the release of the 960ti series of NVIDIA powered cards recently, gamers can now get 4K gaming easier than ever before and at a price almost half of what they had to pay previously for a Titan card.

As someone who has covered the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas for many years, it is no secret that Sony has pushed Ultra High Definition, or HDTV heavily at the show and consumers can now pick up a 4K television under 1000 dollars at most retail locales.

So, the question I ask myself is how far away we are from 4K coming to a console and is it the next “Holy Grail” for the gaming industry? Some had thought that 3D would be the next big thing but it never really took off as planned despite Sony making a very solid and affordable 3D monitor for the PS3 as well as many great games with 3D.

There are naturally hardware limitations to overcome as recently as February; Forbes even mentioned that 4K enabled systems were in the works from both Sony and Microsoft.

The PS4 does do 4K for video, movies, and pictures but does not currently have the ability to display games in 4K resolution, and is likely not going to be able to without new hardware as this is not often something that can be fixed with a software/firmware update.

Streaming powerhouse Netflix has said that they have been promised by Sony and Microsoft that 4K is coming but again, likely for video and not for gaming.

So my question is this, how important is 4K gaming to you at this time and do you think we will have to wait for the next generation of consoles for it to happen, or will Sony have it out for the PS4 sooner rather than later?

It is clear it cannot be done on the hardware and will have to be done via streaming as that is what both are set to do 4K in now. It would take all new hardware for a 4K gaming experience in console.

Still got their heads in the clouds! MS needs to admit that xboxone is way underpowered and they need to stop lying to the people that this so called cloud is going to make it more powerful than a super computer.
