Does The Success Of The Order: 1886 Show That Sony Has The Most Loyal Fans

It is no secret that The Order: 1886 has been a game steeped in controversy and heated debate even before it was released. Fans, critics, and other bashed or defended everything from the game’s price, gameplay mechanics, run time, and lack of multiplay.

Rarely has a title inspired such passion and debate pre and post release as this game as despite mixed reviews, fans have defended the game and have seen it top the sales charts around the world the week of release, even toppling the heavily-touted Evolve from the #1 spot.
While a large portion of the early success for the game is no doubt a combination of pre-orders and fans eager to have a new exclusive for their PS4 systems, one cannot amass sales simply on those factors alone and sustain them.

The Meta score for the game amongst reviewers is at a 6.0 and a 6.8 for fan reviews showing that for the most part, fans and reviewers have been largely in agreement, but yet even those who are willing to admit what the game is lacking will often defend it to the end.

So what is allowing the game to succeed when other games with similar reviews and word of mouth would likely have withered and faded?

Brand loyalty is a big factor here as with the huge sales lead of the PS4 system over their rivals combined with an audience starving for new exclusives for the system, The Order: 1886 was given tons of support from fans looking for the next big thing and eager to see a new franchise launched. As such, combined with the anticipation for the game and very clever marketing and hype by Sony, fans were willing to overlook things they would not in other games.

It is very interesting how games like Infamous: Second Son, and Killzone: Shadow Fall did not get this sort of love out of the box and even the much maligned Knack still did fairly well in sales despite the bad reviews.

I would expect at a future date when the price drops for the game and new DLC becomes available there will be a surge of new purchases from people who are not yet ready to make the leap but will in time check it out if nothing more than curiosity or to add it to their collection.

Sony is in an enviable spot as despite the people who are eager to take shots at them and want to see them fail; they have endured and continue to thrive as the PS4 enters the second year of being on the market.

Bloodborne, Until Dawn, and Uncharted 4, are just a few of the impressive looking games that Sony has scheduled and you can bet that come June, their E3 conference will be eagerly anticipated and watched to see what new games they will be announcing.

Until then, fans will take advantage of a slew of third part games and the exclusives Sony offered and will likely continue to forge ahead as even with the less than stellar reception for The Order: 1886, Fans are showing that Sony and the PS4 are currently a runaway train that keeps gaining momentum and shows no signs of slowing down in terms of fan support and loyalty.

People like you make sony fans like me sound like we have an agenda lol. It simply just isn’t like that and its cringey to read comments like yours lol.

That was the point of the article, brand loyalty. People are so loyal to the system of their choice that they are willing to accept pretty much any exclusive for the console and will defend it passionately even if privately they had issues. I would love to see in a week or two how many of the games are available for purchase as a previously owned.

Loyal, or gullible? Chances are, the majority of the early sales figures are from Day-1 purchases, including pre-orders, from those that refused to believe the negative buzz. If you want to call that loyalty, fine ; a dog is “loyal” too, but it also chases cars, humps legs, and licks anything that smells interesting.

I don’t think these sales are attributed to being loyal or gullible. Its the same reason things like destiny have been put into so many consoles. We are all hungry. I bought the Order out of the fact that there is nothing else to play. But just as some people like playing destiny I also liked the order…

Uh no, Gareth, no. Just because you don’t like the game, or the negative reaction about the game’s length, doesn’t mean many didn’t enjoy it for what it was. Check here: https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/march-2015-ps4-ps3-ps-vita-new-release-video-games/

This shows why PS4 people are loyal, but also shows how Xbox users are mostly loyal to the brand. I have both systems and enjoy them both. Both sides like to sling mud and bring down the competition with strawman arguments. It seems to me this article is nothing more than that and you should reassess how you present your articles. The metacritic score is actually 6.8, but I can see how your loyalty would want to make it seem lower than actuality, and make the game seem much worse than it really is. How about playing the game then giving your own opinions, rather than the motivation of my system is better than yours.

Funny thing is if you actually look at the site there are pictures and video of me playing the game as far back as PAX Prime and C.E.S. Also I do not see anywhere on the site where either my staff or I say we disliked the game. so lets see, I have played it, many rimes and I did not ever say I did not like it.

      • Oh C’mon STFU Gareth! Why do you then post an article to show that brand loyalists are the ones who helped The Order top the sales chart? The fact that the hype this game actually had on pre-release, best MSAA adoption, being a new AAA IP on a hardware that is already selling 2:1 times it’s competitor has lured many gamers. Many gamers are willing to buy a single player game with impressive visuals and cutscenes seamlessly merging into cinematic gameplay. That’s the factor you are ignoring. The quintessential quality devs ACTUALLY promised the gamers have been kept up from my view. So for the others who felt same and ARE glad to have bought it.

Brand loyalists are the key to the success of any game. How many games can you name that have had the mixed reviews that this one did yet have sold as well as they did? PS4 owners, myself included, are eager for any new content for the game that is exclusive they are willing to overlook issues with a game. The game is fine for what it is but by and large as the comments have indicated, many consumers were disappointed with the length of the game and with other aspects of the game. Many indicated the great visuals but issues with the gameplay and the campaign length. Despite this, the game still sells so how is that not brand loyalty? You cannot say it is a great game that everyone loved, as the Meta scores indicate otherwise. The public is well aware that it is not the game many had hoped for, yet it still sells. That is brand loyalty plain and simple.

Maybe it’s just the critics and user reviewers of the internet that have the biggest problems with the game.

It’s more likely that the people, like the many that post/comment on threads, and have played it, for I have not thus far played, enjoyed their experience.

A non-broken day 1 release game can do that to consumers. I’m looking at you Ubisoft and nearly every other developer.

There’s a reason it’s selling decently well. We just have to find it!

You write sensationalism to get attention and seem to be part of this new generation of crap writers that don’t discuss games, rather want to see if you can get a rise out of people. Attention to your crap, negative or positive, doesn’t matter as long as you get people to notice you. Case in point, you say you did play the game, and you say never did you say you didn’t like it, so why not follow your own opinion and realize the hype is all bullshit, why specialize in stirring bullshit? Some can be, I have seen some that just unload on a title, especially one that has received fair reviews to date just to be different. We see that in movies often as some film will be doing well and getting good reviews, like a Marvel film, and they just unload on it to be the one site that hated it so people go to read it and then fill their forums with F.U. comments which all the while drive the attention up. The issue with this is you upset the studio enough with what is deemed to be unfair criticism, then you will find yourself not getting interview and review access as the studios will say, they trash us all the time why do we both. Let us not forget that is what happens in the game industry. I know a couple of recent releases that came out for PC and Consoles. The company was less than thrilled with some of the heat they took for the games and down the road unless you are a mega-site traffic wise, there can be some fallout. I tell the staff be fair and objective. For opinion pieces if you wake up and have an idea then write it as sometimes your initial gut reaction makes for the best articles just be fair and if you change your stance then do an updated one explaining why you had the stance then and why you changed it.

  5. Yes, Sony do have loyal fans.. But still, I strongly disagree with most of the reviews because IMO and I repeat, IMO, it’s a really nice game and I feel like that contributes to the sale numbers even taking the game’s problems into account

It’s selling well because it was the best game of February. The same way that the PS4 is outselling the Xbox by such a hilarious, giant margin because it’s a far better console. The low – IQ paupers of the Microsoft Poverty Box are deperate in their desire for PS4 exclusives to fail because their own system is dead at retail and doesn’t have a single exclusive game worth playing, their butthurt tears are just as useless as their sub – HD console is.

Brainwashed Microsoft donkeys can cry about it all they want. But the PS4 is 8 million units ahead of their worthless, last – gen console and that gap gets bigger every month. PS4 and PS4 exclusives are dominating the sales charts because they contain far more quality than Microsoft’s dying, pauper console. Those are just the facts.

Most everyone I know who ran out and bought it said if they knew what they know now they would have bought it used for 5 buck from GameStop a couple years from now. I am glad those who bought it found something to enjoy it. There are people who get ripped off know they got ripped off ,but will defend the junk purchase with their life. Then you have those people who will call a turd a turd. Then there are the people that will never be satisfied with anything and nitpick everything to death or the negative people. So what makes this game a great turd? The graphics make it great the story is ok to decent. The turd part it’s really short as any game no matter how polished and good if its less than 20 hrs with no replay value it’s no worth the 60.00 dollar price. Then there is absurd amount of cutscenes and quit a few QTE out the butt where all turds come from. So its a pretty turd. Prepare for future games to be shorter as gamers have voted for it. Just like we voted for DLC and season passes plus broken games at launch. We all voted for these things with our dollars.

The game has its good points like its a graphics whores wet dream ,but sorry that doesnt make a game good. The game was rushed I am sure it was ment to be much bigger and grander in scale. Instead they took what they had polished as much as it could be then put it out. It’s a basically a tech demo for the engine they used really. Now I have no doubt the next The Order 1886 will be a awesome game. Why because people critiqued the game and most of the criticism was right on hence why the scores are what they are.

I like it for what it is you like it for what it is ,but why is it that we need to drop down to name calling? I am a gamer you are a gamer cause we both love games. We gamers are all on the same side no matter what system we play on or what games we prefer. The developers and publishers are not really on our side they are on their board and their investors sides. If we gamers continue to in fight and just blindly buy whatever they toss out they get rich and we get mindless rinse and repeats like Assassins Creeds ,BF4 , COD , Madden ,and FIFA. The old saying give a inch take mile is what we are getting.

There is no way to truly judge loyalty since it means different things to different people. If the studios do not like what a publication does they would not be getting support from them in terms of press releases, review materials, and event invites., Believe or not they love stories like this as they want people talking about their games. It is a forum for intelligent discussion and articles of this type are simply asking a question, one that supporters of the Xbox and the PS4 systems have asked. A recent poll said the Xbox owners were the most loyal to the brand yet the support for the PS4 and the games has been huge. If you note, we do not run MS and PS articles right up against one another. If there is a topic of interest we write it. Judging from the reaction I would say this is a hot topic for gamers as for every one who has your reaction, there are others who support this. Good writing is not serving up the same stuff it is asking questions that stir debate, passion, and get people to engage in a discussion which is what this has done. If I wanted hits, I could have written a Star Wars or Avengers article, or a Jurassic World one and have twice the hits. I think it was an is a valid topic. A game with mixed reviews gets solid sales and maintains it. I would say that brand loyalty plays a big part in this. Microsoft has fiercely loyal fans but they could not push games to the level of The Order, even ones that did not has as much negativity surrounding them pre and post launch. So once again, loyal fans who decided to support it.

I’m sorry if implied that you were trying to get pages hits because that isn’t what I was implying. I’m sorry I insulted or offended you. Like I said I do believe that certain sites like IGN, Gamespot, or Kotaku benefit from articles intended to start flame wars and like I said that kinda crap doesn’t help the developers, ganers, or industry as a whole. RAD is definitly getting attention and might help them with sales but if I were them I wouldn’t like that kinda trash talk especially coming from reviewers that claim a game had to much water.

Those sites you mention are often dealing with corporate backers or sponsors who often do not care about the content so much as the hits and they often post stuff to do this as those hits allow them to have some leeway to post more journalistic writings. Sadly in this day and age many are just online looking to start or continue a fight.

the right answer to the headline is:

people, specially outside the US, have stopped caring, believing, listening to, etc, about the biased american press, who does their best to promote their national american brand (of course, it’s obvious) and by trashing and bashing anything from the foreigner and enemy Sony (of course, it’s obvious).
seriously, how can The order get a 2/10, because of:
    – there are QTE’s in the game
    – the game is too short (sure, +7-8 hours is really short, when we compare to other games and its 4-5 hours campaigns)

because of these 2 arguments, the american press hasn’t stopped, since many months, trying to destroy any ps4 game, even more if it’s an exclusive.
driveclub got 4 and 5 out of 10 scores, because the online wasn’t working flawlessly.
but the same american press did give Halo anniversary and it’s totally broken online component, where people can’t still play online several months after release, 9.5 and 10/10 scores.

how do you want people outside the US to believe in such joke press ?

the truth is xbox fans and anti-sony press-journalists, like forbes’s erik kain, like people from gamespot, ign, polygon, etc, are so pissed about the fact sony and the ps4 is DESTROYING the xbox one, even in its homeland, the north america, they are so pissed the ps4 is far more powerful and future-proof than the x1, has 2-1 sales, and still counting, has much better hardware, with tons and tons of untapped power, like the 64 command paths and heavy gpgpu computing with the 18 ACU’s, where the x1 already struggles at displaying simple non textured games like sunset overdrive, at only 900p, or call of duty ghosts and tons of other titles, at 720p only, where the ps4 runs them without a sweat, at 1080p, with much better antialiasing, better textures, shadows, lighting, everything,
they are so pissed microsoft spent 2.5 billions on a single crapppy game, when they could have made hundreds of AAA titles the next 2 years, while the ps4 has tons of great games coming in 2015 and later,
because of these few reasons, xbox fans and the pro microsoft press are so disgusted and desperate, seeing their favorite console of choice ALWAYS getting the lowest, inferior, less good version (the witcher 3, another massive title where the ps4 will run, with no effort at all, at 1080p, where the xbox one will be running at 60% less demanding power, at 900p: if that isn’t an evidence that the ps4 IS FAR MORE POWERFUL than the xbox one, i don’t know what more reasons fans want and need… but hey, a delusional xbot is a delusional xbot),
they are so disgusting, that all they can do to make sony and the ps3-ps4 games look bad, etc, so have low sales, etc, well, they will do.
just like the hundreds of 4,3,2/10 scores for The ORder.

Last monday, i finally bought my ps4, with The order, killzone shadow fall (incredible huge 3d worlds, at 1080p 60fps, with tons of lights and particles at the screen, incredible.. and when we take into account the fact that around 60-70% of this game was made with 1,5-2Gb of ram, before sony announcing the ps4 would have 8Gb, and devs could use 5.5-6Gb of ram, well, we can only stay optimistic regarding the next killzone game, when it will be massively using the gpgpu computing, along the 64 command paths and that insane pool of fast memory) + Wolfenstein new order.

and yes.No, i don’t believe in the crappy and bunch of liars and haters that make the US press. no, i, and other +22 million of ps4 owners, don’t believe in those 2 and 1/10 The order scores.
those scores are just a mix of jealousy, hate and despair.

that’s why the same press will actively be trying to kill the next AAA ps4 title, bloodborne, with other thousands of crapppy previews-articles-pieces-etc, saying the game looks bad, the game this, the game that, etc etc, just to bash it, like they did with the order.

but you know what ? you can publish another 10000 articles, begging people not to preorder Bloodborne, etc, like you did with The order. that game will still sell great.

i really hope after this disgusting hate propaganda campaign against The order, i hope the game will sell like 3 or 4+ million units. just 4 million middle finger to that awful, disgusting, gaming press.

LOL, after all the efforts put into bashing The order, and seeing the game is doing great, it must feel really stupid 😉

haters, just keep hating, while playing your 720p fantastic games, and the 2 AAA titles released each month, for your console, until 2018. so many titles to play, + all the incredible offers via Games with Gold program, where people get fabulous ultra-recent AAA titles, THAT makes a BUNCH of fantastic 900 and 720p games to play. 900 and 720p, that are the new next-gen standards, as resolutions and graphics don’t matter.

good job, READY AT DOWN. those incredible life-like graphics will make a few million haters cry.

Thank you for a detailed and well thought out reply. I am looking forward to Bloodborne as what I have played though a small amount was very impressed. I know it may not be a for the masses game at first glance but I do think that the game has potential. You make interesting points about Microsoft as there have been stories of them paying for people fill the net with good comments about Microsoft, bad comments on Sony, and suppress comments about Sony that show them in a good light. I wish they would concentrate on making better exclusives instead of paying for smear campaigns and throwing money at developers to either delay or not release their games on their rivals systems.

So…the fanboy bashing of another console, pathetic crackpot conspiracy theories & pointless pissing contest (PC gaming is really the top of the mountain folks, not these consoles that are sputtering trying to get to 1080p) is a well thought out reply? Ha ha Damn dude, these rabid Sony fanboys got you shook! You changed up & started co-signing & sucking up quick. There must be some french in that blood the way you turned tail & quit. Sony has done just as much or worse than MS, so why are we suddenly haroing on their smear campaigns & such, Did we chide Sony when they did those things to Sega & Nintendo? Or when they pretty much only stopped their DRM bulls*** & other practices because they saw how people reacted to MS? The proof is in the features or lack there of. Taking out things that you had last gen &…you know what, nevermind. Some of you are going to be fanboys & zombies anyway. F it…

Give me a break man. The game was average. Crap really if you actually compared it to all the hype & such the Sony fanboys threw out there for it to live up to. It is soooooo damn funny to hear about how everyone’s biased & that reviews & reviewers can’t be trusted all of a sudden when Sony’s games are reviewed negatively. Yet when they praised that overhyped The Last Of Us (which I am glad that I didn’t actually buy as it was goid, but not the omg title that people would have you believe) or speak well of Uncharted or whatever, these same reviewers words were held uo like gospel. And eaten up like mana from the heavens. We farking LOVED these very same guys then. Lmao

Is it a 2 out of 10 game? Nope, not by a long shit. That would just be gross exaggeration if someone said that. Something like Superman64 would get that kind of score. However, it is an average ass game. The only thing that raises it to above average is the graphics. Had this game been on a competing console or on the PC the same people donning the knee pads licking the head of R@D’s rod would be calling it out like they did a Ryse, TitanFall (man, it wasn’t a world beater but the flak that game undeservedly took was epic troll worthy) or even Crysis 3 (where graphics over gameplay was a bad thing to some of the same folks excusing it now). There is no consistency at all with some folks man.

Let’s be real, many are eating it up because they are starving for something actually worth the price of admission to play & justify their toy. The only halfway decent games out for the damn thing have been multi-plat, remasters/remakes & indie focused. Everything is broken or a sequel. Or a broken sequel. Possibly buried in DLC. Or, just the same uninspired fps, commando tough guy, let’s get gritty type of games. If people weren’t so damn thirsty for games, the order wouldn’t be nearly as successful. And hey, that is okay. It is not a damn thing wrong with enjoying the title; but let’s stop pretending that it is an overwhelmingly great title & that it’s being so unjustly judged. I have enjoyed quite a few games that reviewed poorly or just universally accepted as perhaps not the greatest game. Still, i could recognize that, accept others opinions & may e even see where they were coming from. That instead of blindly defending it because it is on some box that I feel that I need to be faithful to or defend like it’s a damn famiky member or something ha ha ha.

Did you really have to post this lame comment twice?! I’ve actually play the game and it’s wonderful!! This whole console war is seriously gotten out of control! It’s just video games. This whole “my system is better than your system” is juvenile and retarded! I plan getting Xbox One soon cause I want to be able to play both PS4 and Xbox one exclusives! As a gamer I like variety. If you only want to play on the XBox One that’s fine, but this stupid fanboy war about which system is better is stupid and tears down the industry like a cancer! Grow up!
