After The Disappointment Of The Order: 1886 Sony Needs A Good Showing From Bloodborne Leading Into E3

With The Order:1886 being released to mixed to negative reviews, PS4 fans now turn their attention to the next big system exclusive, Bloodborne. The game combines dark and Gothic gameplay with a hack and slash combat system in a richly detailed environment that players can explore as they battle all manner of supernatural creatures and epic Boss monsters. I loved my time with the game at PAX Prime and although it was a challenge, I found it and Until Dawn to be my favorite PS4 games at the show. The fluid motion and brutal close range combat was a real thrill and the ability to sneak in a weapons blast in the midst of the ballet of blades showed just how much bloody fun this game could be.

I also enjoyed climbing ladders, exploring the streets and seeing the detailed city in which the game level was set. It has also been revealed that the game will have dungeon levels that change as you go and will also allow co-op play which will likely make many fans very happy. The Order: 1886 had to endure harsh criticism pre release over perceptions about limited mobility and gameplay freedom, short running time, and a lack of multiplayer. One person compared it to a collection of great collection of movies wrapped around a very short and limited cover based shooter. I am reserving my final verdict on The Order: 1886 until I get more time with the game but I can honestly say I am less then encouraged by all the less than positive reviews for the game to date. Bloodborne on the other hand has basked in a wave of cautious optimism and excitement with hardly any overt concerns being voiced by the gaming masses.

Gamers who found disappointment with The Order: 1886 are likely going to either embrace or be cautious about the latest PS4 exclusive but I do not detect nearly as much trepidation about Bloodborne and fans are eager to let the hardware of their PS4 loose on a game which they believe will showcase the power and versatility of the system. With that being said, and despite which are likely strong sales for The Order: 1886 based on pre-orders, Sony can use a hit game with strong critical approval going into E3 in June as the last thing they need is for their two big 2015 AAA exclusives to be met with bad reviews and worse, discord and disappointment from their fan base as they attempt to build even more momentum from their E3 showcase where all manner of new games will come. Until Dawn and the latest Uncharted game are still looming, but for fans, all eyes have turned towards Bloodborne and the hopes that it will deliver upon its promise.

Bloodborne will be the next overhyped Sony game to crash and burn.
It’s a “Souls” type game for N00BS and thus doesn’t carry the Souls name.

No worries son, the ponies will have exclusive turds coming for the PoorStation4 soon (or later), if not delays.

Expect the following ‘cinematic’ features after The Order fiasco :

      – Short length to save budget & heating issues
      – Forced Cutscenes to prolong ‘play’ time
      – Dark/muted/colorless art style to save gfx bandwidth
      – Stiff hair physics and recycled robotic animation
      – Corridors or empty city/jungle/desert
      – Poor QTEs
      – Poor AI
      – Poor AF
      – Poor/No-multiplayer mode
      – Poor replay value
      – 30fps

      BONUS:
      – Foggy
      – Incomplete feature like Photo Mode

Yes but to be fair, it is still better than any exclusive the Xbox One offers from a technological standpoint as The Xbox One could not render the game to the same detail level as the PS4.

With fantastic games like Bloodborne and Until Dawn on the horizon it’s really no wonder the PS4 has been trouncing the Xbox One every single month this generation in sales. The Xbox has been offering no real games, only cheap, overhyped, last – gen, unfinished messes like Halo and Forza which crashed and burned and failed to move consoles. Sony has been ofering consistently better exclusive games for the past 15 months and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.

So instead of trying to have an intelligent debate you resort to name calling. Let me enlighten you. I own the site, the magazine, and have a syndicated radio show and newspaper content around the show and have had for well over 14 years now. We do not ever take any money from anyone for positive reviews or content. Everything we post from myself and staff is our musings, thoughts, and ideas and is not done with any corporate agenda. As for the fool part, I have four degrees what are you bringing to the table?
The facts remain, the reviews for The Order: 1886 have been disappointing, and when Bloodborne releases next month if it suffers from bad reviews, sales, and poor consumer feedback that will undermine Sony when they go to E3 to push their new items. Regardless of sales the media will ask one simple question, why should we be excited for what you have shown us when the last two AAA titles you hyped failed to deliver upon expectations.

I really liked Until Dawn the three times I played it. My only concern is that like L.A. Noire it does at times appear that your decision making is mainly for show as the paths will happen no matter what you do.

Gareth, I’m currently enjoying The Order. I take it for what it is and honestly needed it’s change of pace. Just thinking of the last few games I’ve played, Dying Light, Far Cry 4, GTA 5, AC: Unity, and DA: Inquisition, I needed to step away from huge open world, constant character progression and just enjoy an immersive story with enough gameplay elements for me to keep me going from start to finish. It somewhat reminds me of my younger days before EVERYTHING had to be multiplayer. I miss those times and like to be reminded of my gaming past. Call me old fashion but I appreciate what Ready At Dawn has created and applaud their effort.

Thank you for a comment with some thought behind it. I hope what will happen is that for those who had issues with the game that it will be enhanced via updates and DLC down the line and that as a result any future titles in the series will benefit from the concerns and feedback that the community voiced. I think in some ways people think that have this powerful device that is being held back as they have yet to find a game that the believe fully shows off the potential of the system. I remind people to look at Resistance 1 and then Resistance 3 and The Last of Us. There is proof in just how far the system can evolve over time. Also there are some very amazing games in the works from Sony. Not all AAA exclusives will live up to the hype. It happens with every company and some lose big bucks. I think Sony naturally has a target on their back and there are those that just look for any opening to attack them. I was not overly blown away by Halo. Sure it was fun but for me it was not the big game-changer I expected. I told people pre X-Box One launch that I need exclusives other than Halo and Gears of War to be excited over and so far the best exclusives that I wanted to play save for Sunset Overdrive have all come to PC.

  5. First of all STFU about your disappointment on the Order 1886. It’s the best looking game ever to hit the consoles this generation. I’ve been having a blast so far. Secondly reviews these days are not clearly representing most gamers’ thoughts. Metacritic is one scoring system that needs an introspective reality check with it’s panel of weird critics. The users section in it is a joke as there can be rampant fanboy downplaying by writing up negative reviews.

The sales for the game and hardware boost are strongly expected to make it reach 3 million within two month time-frame owing to two factors. The hype it had and surprisingly the curiosity of many gamers actually reacting to negative critic reviews being widely subjective ” I want a game not movie”.

First, you should chill and watch your tone as this is supposed to be a forum for discussion. I never said I was disappointed in the game. If you read what we posted I was actually one of the few promoting or speaking well for the game. Nowhere do you see I was disappointed. I was commenting on the negative reviews and the disappointment that has been voiced by critics and gamers alike. I agree with you on Metacritic, you will note we do not take part in their system as well. I am glad you like the game but the facts are that regardless of sales, many fans and critics have been disappointed with the game to date and if Sony was being honest, they would say that the reviews and feedback have been less than they hoped for.

The fuss is it’s a really short game. Then there is the interactive movie aspect of it. Yes it is beautiful and yes it show cases the power of the PS4…..big whoop! If they had made the story so that there were choices at certain points during the story that would change the ending, that would have gave it some replay value. The down side to all this to me anyway is publishers and developers may say, see no one wants a single player only game. I am exhausted of multiplayer in almost every game.

I also voted with my dollar not to support evolve based on its mainly only fun played with multiplayer and forsure the DLC B.S. Yes I know it’s only skins and season passes. Evolve is a game without substance and depends on DLC for it to have substance.

We as the gaming community and customers have to stick together and weigh our gaming hobby purchases. If we don’t then publishers and developers will sell us more broken games ,more short cinematic games, and more rehashed yearly titles like assassins creed.

The gaming community also needs to come together in a positive way and stop being so negative. Really we define our selves on our system of choice. I mostly use my PS4 not because I am a Sony fanboy ,but because from the tech side it was the better system this time also I like that they made the controler a little bigger.. I played mostly on the Xbox 360 last gen ,but microsofts policies soured me so I voted with my money. Sure Sony may have had a simular plan ,but wisely didn’t anouce it. By coming together as one force instead of a divided whinney haters club we can get the games we want with the quality and length we deserve.

Anyway great article sorry for the rant.

You make many great points James. I am actually getting ready to write my review for EVOLVE in the next couple of days. I have hesitated as I am not sure which way to go. I like the graphics and concept of the game but I also am very aware of the lack of any campaign and the fact that regardless of if you are playing with bots, humans, in EVACUATION Mode or online it still comes down to hunting the monster or hunting the hunters. The monster has a big advantage in terms of strength and balance and games are pretty much dependent on how good or bad the persons playing are. Looking at The Order: 1886, some will bash it no matter what as Sony has their detractors. There are those who some call “Fanboys” who will defend it with their last breath stating how great it looks and what a great concept it is. Then their are those who say well it looks good but I wanted and expected more. That is what it is supposed to be about, you seem to be one who has looked at what is offered, made a choice based on your personal preferences and acted upon it. It is funny how rage-filled people get if you do not agree with them.

        Thank you Gareth I try.

Just give us your honest opion. Call out what needs to be called out and praise what is praise worthy. It’s not a bad game by any means plus it didn’t launch to broken to play so there is that. My main gripe is it was that evolve was made from the get go for DLC. Now I am not against DLC per say ,but it’s getting out of hand as the quality is going down while price keeps going up. I as a gamer am feeling milked and taken advantage of by these practices. I use to see the value and now I am not and to me that is a bad thing for the industry as a whole. I know I am just one man with my own opions ,but many friends I personaly know and speak with regularly are feeling the same as I.

So Gareth what are your thoughts and opions on the state of DLC?
