Battlecry. Hands On: PAX Prime 2014

I always look forward to covering Bethesda as they tend to have great displays which allow for some great pictures to go with their fun and innovative titles.

During E3 I got to play The Evil Within and learned of a new action game called Battlercry. Since my time was limited that day, I had to restrict my hands on time to The Evil Within but after an extended video and presentation by the developers I was more than interested in this third person team based game.

Playing as one of three classes, with more to come later, players moved about a map to locate, secure, and defend strategic elements of a map.

Playing in a world where gunpowder does not exist means that players will be using plenty of bladed weapons and with factions inspired by actual empires, things can get brutal.

The three classes available to us in the demo were the Tech Archer, The Duelist, and the Enforcer and players were able to change classes in game to find the one that best meets their style of play.

I started as a Tech Archer as I enjoyed shooting arrows at enemies and swinging around as the class was fast and mobile but was not always ideal at close range. Despite this I wracked up a nice kill total with the ranger before I moved on to The Enforcer. This class was a slower and hulking class who has a gigantic blade which can also be used a shield to block enemy attacks. In close it can be devastating but the lack of mobility compared to the Archer made me wish for the speed I had given up.

Up next was The Duelist who employs bladed weapons in a fury of chops and cuts. This character is ideal for up close and personal action as it is a spinning top of death to any who get close. I noticed that several other players were using this class as we had a party of 4 Duelists slicing an enemy player down in no time as we defended a recently captured station.

The graphics were solid but not cutting edge but the thrill of the game is the fast paced action and team play which upon release in 2015 makes this look like a solid and much welcome addition to the online action genre.
