Recently we got to speak with photographer Angelo Kritikos about his work and career. Naturally we assigned our photographer Neal Jordan to speak to one of his idols.

When did you first become interested in photography? And did you
know at that very moment that that was going to be a dominant force in your life?

I was interested in photography at a young age. I remember playing with disposable and Polaroid cameras. On family vacations, I’d snap away and would always be the one taking the pictures.  It wasn’t until high school I began taking proper film classes and heavily fell in love with fashion photography. It was during my Sophomore and Junior years of high school that I knew that photography was what I wanted to pursue so I looked into art schools for college.

Your work encompasses beauty, music, fashion, and people who are known
the world over … do you see the world of gaming becoming a factor?

Not sure how I can incorporate the creative world of gaming into my fashion career but I’m always open to new artistic experiences and collaborations.

Since the late 1990’s digital photography has overtaken film photography
at an almost unbelievable pace. Which do you prefer? Do you still shoot film?

It’s crazy since I was completely in the middle of the film to digital transition. Many of the colleges I was looking into were dropping their film photography programs and were fully switching to digital photography. Hands down, yes film is so amazing and I wish I shot more of it, but I’m all about the new stuff. I’m looking forward to seeing the progression in photography.

Do you see holograms and holographic imaging one day becoming a factor
if not driving force in photography?

Ihope so! How wild is that??

Is there a celebrity you have not had the opportunity to work with yet
that you really want to work with?

There are tons! Right now I’m dying to shoot with Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto. I love their raw style and how expressive they are in photos.

Does the world of social networking have any influence on your work and
if so how?

Blahhhhh. I’m so weird about social media so I try to not take it seriously. I love/hate it and I think it’s cool in small doses. I often get inspired on sites like Tumblr, but when I find myself getting distracted by all my @angelokritikos accounts, I take long breaks from it to dig into my artwork.

Has directing music videos inspired you to consider directing television
or movies?

Totally. I hope to take on more challenges in the directing world. Right now my main interest is music videos but I’m itching to direct a short film soon.

What does the term ‘L.A. Culture mean to you?

It means extremely creative people and parking tickets.

What is your preferred camera set-up? Make? Model? Lens?

I’m not a big techie so I try to keep it simple. Right now I’m shooting with a user-friendly Canon EOS 60D camera. Up until about six months ago, I was shooting big magazine covers with a basic Canon Rebel series camera. I absolutely loved that thing but it was time for a little upgrade.

What is the most vital piece of tech to your work excluding camera equipment?

My HDMX Jam Plus speaker. It’s super portable, plays over Bluetooth and it’s loud as fuck. I love playing music on my photo shoot sets. Some new-wave artists I love to listen to while shooting are Pennybirdrabbit, Charli xcx, Kitten, and Evan Mellows.

Is there any difference/differences between what you photograph ‘on the clock’
and ‘off the clock’?

Not really. I photograph celebs the way I would shoot with my friends. I like to keep all my shoots pretty laid back and fun.

XBOX or Playstation?

Playstation! Though I haven’t played one in years! My favorite game growing up was Crash Bandicoot.
